The Route Your Car Actually Takes
Downstate pickups take I-80 across Pennsylvania into Ohio. Gary, South Bend, and Elkhart sit on the Indiana Toll Road, where I-80 and I-90 run together. Fort Wayne comes off the Toll Road on I-69 south. For Indianapolis the truck drops to I-70 and comes in through Columbus and Dayton, with Carmel, Fishers, and Bloomington short runs off I-465 and I-69. Evansville is I-69 all the way south from Indianapolis. That road is finished now, so the truck no longer detours through Kentucky.
Upstate pickups from Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse take I-90 through Cleveland and Toledo straight onto the Toll Road, which is why Buffalo to Gary, at 525 miles, is the shortest and cheapest pair. In winter there is no alternate corridor. Moving to Indiana from New York: What to Do After Your Car Arrives

New Indiana residents have 60 days to apply for a title for every vehicle they own with an out-of-state title. Miss the window and the BMV charges a $30 late penalty.

The BMV puts it plainly: "New Indiana residents are not charged sales tax when transferring their vehicle's certificate of title from their prior state of residence to Indiana." You claim it on Form ST-108E. What you pay instead is the annual excise tax, based on value and age and paid with the registration.
One Free Inspection, No Safety Test, Emissions in Two Counties
Every vehicle from another state needs a VIN inspection before Indiana will title it, new residents included. Any BMV branch does it free if you bring the car, or a law enforcement officer can do it for up to $5 on State Form 39530. There is no safety inspection. The BMV's new-resident list has no line for one.
Emissions testing applies only in Lake and Porter counties, next to Chicago. There it runs every two years for 1976 and newer vehicles under 9,000 pounds, with the four newest model years exempt, and you need a passing test to register. Everywhere else, including Indianapolis, there is none.
Insurance and License
Indiana's minimum liability coverage is 25/50/25: $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. You need proof of insurance to buy a plate. The license window is the same 60 days, with no written test on a valid New York license, only a vision screening.
Bring the New York title, the VIN inspection, proof of your Indiana address, and proof of insurance. The title is $15. Registration is $21.35 a year plus a $15 Transportation Infrastructure Improvement Fee plus the excise tax. Check current numbers with the Indiana BMV before you go.
