How to Ship a Car to Alaska?
The best way to answer the question of "How to ship my car to Alaska" is to show you how we operate our auto shipping business. We understand that car owners in Alaska won't trust just any car shipping company to move their vehicle across states. They value experience and reputation. Here's how we do it:
- First, once your order is placed, we'll initiate the process of moving a car to Alaska. This typically occurs within a week. We'll keep you informed with important details, such as the time and date of pickup, tracking number, and the truck driver's contact information.
- Next, the truck driver will contact you to confirm delivery plans. The drivers in our carrier network are committed to treating all vehicles as if they were their own, prioritizing the protection of your car against any damage during delivery. Before the driver departs, you'll sign and receive a Bill of Lading.
- Finally, upon the vehicle's arrival in Alaska, both you and the driver will inspect it for any damage. This is also the time when you will sign the final inspection report. It's that simple!
Alaska Auto Transport Routes, Transit Times, and Pricing
Depending on the car's location, most pickup windows are 24 to 72 hours from when the vehicle is ready to be picked up. This window could take up to 5 days in remote areas. From 1,750 to 2,500 miles, the transit time is estimated at 7 to 10 days.

Heavy Equipment and Lowboy Carrier Shipping
With so much distance between towns and so many remote communities, the Alaska population relies on lowboy carriers to move heavy equipment, snowplows and equipment, and other road and building construction vehicles. The lowboy carriers in Number 1 Auto Transport's network are ideal for moving Alaska's bulldozers, dump trucks, and other large vehicles.
Transporting heavy equipment is a serious business. Lowboy carriers can handle oversized loads and high gross tonnage. The drivers in Number 1 Auto Transport's carrier network are especially skilled in moving heavy equipment to job sites and navigating busy highways with these unique loads.
Heavy machinery can also go by sea. TOTE's roll-on/roll-off ships carry heavy equipment from Tacoma to Anchorage, and Alaska Marine Lines barges oversize cargo from Seattle. The road leg to or from the port moves on lowboy and step deck trailers.
What Moves on Lowboy and Step Deck Trailers
- Bulldozers, excavators, and loaders
- Dump trucks and work trucks
- Snowplows and road equipment
- Skid steers, backhoes, and compact track loaders
- Cranes, lifts, and aerial booms
- Industrial generators and pumps
Why Lowboy and RGN Transport Works for Alaska
Height Compliance
Lowboy decks sit 18 to 24 inches off the ground. Tall machinery clears bridges and overpasses on the way to and from the port.
Stability and Capacity
Step deck and lowboy trailers carry the weight of full-size dozers, cranes, and combines without straining the suspension.
Permit and Escort Expertise
Carriers in our network handle oversize permitting, route surveys, escort vehicles, and restricted travel windows on the road leg.
Alaska Port Logistics
Ocean carriers load cars for Alaska in the Pacific Northwest. TOTE and Matson load them at Tacoma, and Alaska Marine Lines barges them from Seattle. The state ferry, the Alaska Marine Highway, carries cars you drive aboard from Bellingham to Southeast Alaska and other ports. Matson and Alaska Marine Lines do not take electric cars or plug-in hybrids. We coordinate the truck leg to or from the port, and the transit windows in our tables count the time to and from Seattle.
Don Young Port of Alaska
Anchorage. Owned and run by the Municipality of Anchorage, it is the state's primary inbound cargo port, with roll-on/roll-off ramps. TOTE's Anchorage terminal is here, and Alaska Marine Lines' barge terminal sits right beside the port.
TOTE Maritime Alaska
Tacoma to Anchorage, twice a week, on roll-on/roll-off ships built for the Alaska trade. TOTE carries personal vehicles and heavy equipment from its Port of Tacoma terminal.
Matson
Tacoma to Anchorage and Kodiak twice a week, and to Dutch Harbor weekly, with its own terminals at all four ports. Matson puts its sailing time from Tacoma at 3 to 7 days.
Alaska Marine Lines
Barges from Seattle: twice a week to Southeast Alaska, weekly to Central Alaska, and seasonal service to Western and Arctic Alaska. Cars move between its service centers only.
Equipment that does not fit on a step deck moves on a Removable Gooseneck (RGN) trailer. The front detaches so tracked machinery rolls on without ramps. Best for excavators, dozers, and equipment without functional drive systems.
Need an Alaska heavy haul quote? Send equipment specs and route. We come back with a price-locked rate.
Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport in Alaska
Most Alaska customers ship on open auto transport. About 85 percent of US shipments move this way. Enclosed auto transport is the right pick for classics, exotics, and any vehicle valued at $75,000 or more.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | Open | Enclosed |
|---|---|---|
| Share of US shipments | About 85% | About 15% |
| Vehicles per load | 8 to 10 | 2 to 6 |
| Cost vs. base | Standard | 40 to 60% above open |
| Protection | Tied down, weather exposed | Fully enclosed |
| Carrier availability | Wide, faster pickup | Tighter, books up fast |
| Booking lead time | 1 to 2 weeks | 2 to 3 weeks |
| Best fit | Daily drivers | Classics, exotics, $75K+ |
When Each Option Makes Sense

Open Transport in Alaska
Open Auto Transport to Alaska. Thinking about using open auto transport for shipping your car to Alaska? Open carriers are the same double-decker carriers your car dealer uses and are the cheapest option to ship your car. Also, your car will be secured with state-of-the-art equipment and arrive at its destination within seven days of departure. Open auto transport is a secure way of shipping your car, protecting your vehicle from road vibration, and more on a long journey.

Enclosed Transport in Alaska
Enclosed Auto Transport to Alaska. The safest way to transport your car to Alaska is within an enclosed auto transport. There are two options for shipping your car via enclosed auto transport. Soft-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: The heavy canvas covering the carriers protects your car from wind-blown debris, rain, sleet, snow, and other elements. Hard-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: In addition to the advantages of soft-sided carriers, hard-sided carriers offer protection for your car in the unlikely event your car is exposed to possible damage during transportation.
Alaska weather note. No matter what the season, the Alaska climate brings interesting conditions. The snow, ice, and high winds encompass much of Alaska's year are fierce and clear reasons to ship your new or used car to Alaska in an enclosed carrier. But with invasive bugs, wildlife, and heavy winds blowing around debris, the summer months aren't all that kind either. Protecting your vehicle by shipping to, from, and within Alaska in an enclosed car carrier is a wise investment.
Not sure which one fits? Tell us the year, make, and model and we will say so straight.
Should You Drive Your Car to Alaska or Ship It?
No route guide covers an Alaska lane, so we do not publish a driving cost for one. There are two main ways to get a car to Alaska from the Lower 48: you drive it up the Alaska Highway through Canada, or it is picked up at your address, trucked to the port, and shipped. Here is how the two compare on everything except the price.
Driving the Alaska Highway vs. Shipping
| Factor | Driving the Alaska Highway yourself | Pickup at your address, trucked to the port, and shipped |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Fuel, lodging, meals, and wear, paid as you go across Canada | One quote, locked at booking |
| Miles on the odometer | Every mile from your home to Alaska, plus any detours | Zero miles added |
| Days | Your own days behind the wheel, all of them | 10 to 14 days on the Washington lane up to 18 to 24 days on the Florida, Massachusetts, and Maryland lanes, none of it yours |
| Risk | Deep cold, short winter days, avalanche delays on Alaska highways, and long stretches with spotty cell service | Covered by the carrier's cargo insurance on the truck leg |
| Effort | Two border crossings with the right papers, route planning, hotels, and winter road reports | Picked up at your address and handled for you |
The days come from this page's transit tables and its Seattle note. Canada's border agency recommends that U.S. citizens travel with a valid passport, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection accepts a passport, a passport card, or a Trusted Traveler card at a land crossing back into the U.S. We leave dollar figures out because your quote supplies them.
The bottom line. Driving makes sense on a short run, the way our FAQ below says, and the Alaska Highway is not a short run. For a winter move, a long haul from the Lower 48, or a car you want kept off the road, shipping gives you the days back and keeps the miles off the car.

Moving to Alaska: What to Do After Your Car Arrives
Many people shipping into Alaska are relocating or reporting to a post. Alaska gives new residents 10 days to apply for registration, and with your title in hand you can start while the car is still on the way. Here is what actually applies.
If you intend to make Alaska your home, you must apply for registration within 10 days of entering the state or taking a job here. Apply at any DMV or partner office, or by mail, with the Vehicle Transaction Application (Form V1), your title, and the fees. Alaska has no statewide sales tax, no safety inspection, and no emissions test.
Registration and Title, Inside 10 Days
If you work in Alaska or are making it your home, register your car within 10 days of entering the state or starting work. A nonresident can drive on a valid registration from another state for up to 60 days. If you hold your title, you can apply while the car is still in transit. Registration runs for two years.
If no lender holds the title, the DMV moves it into your name as part of registering. If a lender holds your title outside Alaska, the DMV issues a registration only and waives the title and lien fees, and you bring your current out-of-state registration instead.
No Sales Tax, but a Local Registration Tax
Alaska levies no statewide sales tax. You pay the biennial registration fee instead, which state law sets at $100 for a passenger car, pickup, or van, plus $10 more when you register in person. The title fee is $15, and recording a lien is another $15.
A city or borough that opts in adds a motor vehicle registration tax at the same time. It falls as the car ages, from $121 in its first year to $16 at eight years or older on the state schedule, and a local government can set a higher rate. Where it applies, it replaces local use and property taxes on the car.
No Safety Inspection, No Emissions Test
Alaska's registration steps list no safety inspection. A VIN inspection on Form 811, free at a state DMV office, comes up only when you have no title or maker's certificate of origin, or for a car first bought overseas.
Emissions testing was suspended in the Fairbanks North Star Borough on January 1, 2010, and discontinued in Anchorage on March 1, 2012. The EPA's list of state and local emissions testing programs, updated September 18, 2026, does not include Alaska.
Insurance and License
Alaska requires liability coverage of at least $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for bodily injury or death, and $25,000 for property damage. Carry proof whenever you drive and show it when a peace officer asks. In Anchorage, a car may be impounded if you cannot show proof, and driving without the required coverage can cost you your license.
If you are moving here, transfer your out-of-state license within 90 days, or 30 days for a commercial license. Expect a written test on Alaska driving rules and a vision test, and bring identity and address documents. If you have held a license from another state in the last 5 years, you skip the road test; surrender your old license when you apply.
Mail-in transactions go to the DMV headquarters in Anchorage. Active duty members stationed here may keep their home state registration, and those who register here pay only the state fee and skip the community registration tax. Some remote communities are exempt from registration and the insurance law, and the DMV publishes the list. Check current fees with the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles before you go.
Alaska Seasonal Shipping Guide
Alaska's busy months follow PCS orders to and from its Army, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard posts. Winter sets the pace on the roads, with deep cold in the Interior, short days, and avalanche work on the Seward Highway. Here is what to expect month by month.

PCS Season Drives Alaska Demand
PCS season runs May to August, the window our Texas page publishes. Orders move cars to and from every post on this page, so carriers and sailings fill early. Book 3 to 4 weeks out once orders are in hand. See our military auto transport page for the discount and timing.
Winter on Alaska's Roads
Most highway avalanches in Alaska hit between December and March, and January lows in Fairbanks average near 17 below zero. Book 2 to 3 weeks ahead, as our FAQ advises, and build a day or two of slack into a winter pickup or delivery.
| Window | Demand | What drives it | Booking lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| May to August | Peak (PCS season) | PCS orders to and from JBER, Eielson, Fort Wainwright, Fort Greely, Clear Space Force Station, and the Coast Guard units | 3 to 4 weeks |
| September to November | Base | Outside PCS season. Avalanches can reach a highway as early as September, and some highways get no winter maintenance from October | 2 to 3 weeks, as our FAQ advises |
| December to March | Winter | Most highway avalanches, January lows near 17 below zero in Fairbanks, and the shortest days of the year | 2 to 3 weeks, plus a day or two of slack |
| April | Base | Late winter on the roads. Avalanches can still reach a highway as late as June | 2 to 3 weeks, as our FAQ advises |
Alaska has no route guide, and this page publishes no seasonal figure of its own beyond its FAQ: 24 to 72 hour pickup windows, up to 5 days in remote areas, and booking at least 2 to 3 weeks ahead. The PCS window and its 3 to 4 week lead time come from our Texas auto transport page. The winter months come from the Alaska DOT&PF and NWS Fairbanks. No page on our site names a snowbird lane to Alaska, so none is shown. We publish no seasonal premium for Alaska, so your quote carries the real number.
Popular Seasonal Routes To and From Alaska
These are lanes from this page's tables. Our transit times for each are figured to and from Seattle, so PCS season and the Alaska winter touch all of them.

- California to Alaska

Alaska Weather Factors
Deep Cold in the Interior
NWS Fairbanks puts the average January low in Fairbanks near 17 below zero, and the record is 66 below, set on January 14, 1934. The Alaska DOT&PF asks drivers to check the battery, tires, and antifreeze before winter travel.
Short Winter Days
On December 21, 2026, the U.S. Naval Observatory has the sun up from 10:58 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. in Fairbanks and from 10:14 a.m. to 3:41 p.m. in Anchorage. Much of a winter pickup or delivery happens in the dark, so allow extra time.
Avalanches on the Seward Highway
DOT&PF crews trigger avalanches on the Seward, Richardson, and Dalton highways. Most hit between December and March. Delays usually run about 45 minutes, but the Seward Highway between Anchorage and Girdwood has been closed for 4 days in a row.
Plows, Priorities, and Closed Roads
After a winter storm, DOT&PF's top priority highways can take up to 12 hours to clear, and connecting highways up to 18. The Denali and Taylor highways get no winter maintenance from about October to May, and cell coverage is sporadic outside Anchorage and Fairbanks.
Storm Response Plan
Monitor
We track NWS winter storm and cold warnings, Alaska 511 road reports, and DOT&PF avalanche alerts on the Seward Highway several days out and flag any Alaska shipment in the path.
Communicate
Your dedicated agent calls 24 to 48 hours before the affected pickup or delivery window.
Hold, Reroute, or Refund
No penalty for weather-driven changes. We reroute, delay, or refund based on your call.
Booking lead time during peak Alaska windows: 3 to 4 weeks from May to August on PCS orders. 2 to 3 weeks the rest of the year, as our FAQ advises, with a day or two of slack for a December to March pickup.
