Washington Auto Transport Routes, Transit Times, and Pricing
The total time for your auto transport involves two separate phases: the pickup window and the transit time. Pickup Window: Depending on the car's location, most pickup windows are 24 to 72 hours from when the vehicle is ready to be picked up. This window could take up to 5 days in remote areas or during peak seasons. Estimated Transit Time: Once picked up, the transit time is estimated based on distance. For destinations under 1,000 miles, transit time is 2 to 3 days. From 1,000 to 1,750 miles, transit time is estimated to be 4 to 6 days. From 1,750 to 2,500 miles, transit time is estimated at 7 to 10 days.

How much does it cost to ship a car to or from Washington? Curious about the cost of shipping your car to or from Washington? Your Washington car shipping rate is influenced by the following key factors:
- Distance: The total mileage of the route is the primary element determining the base cost.
- Location Accessibility: Shipping to or from major hubs like Seattle or Spokane is typically cheaper than remote areas due to proximity to major highways (I-5, I-90).
- Trailer Type: Open transport is the most budget-friendly option, while an enclosed carrier provides maximum protection at a higher cost.
- Vehicle Details: The size and weight of your vehicle (e.g., standard car vs. dually truck) directly impact the space and fuel required on the trailer.
- Seasonality: Prices are higher during peak seasons (e.g., summer and snowbird migrations) when demand for carriers is highest.
For the most accurate Washington auto transport quote, please provide these details:
- Your car's year, make, and model

Military and PCS Auto Transport in Washington
Washington is home to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, three Navy installations around Puget Sound, and Fairchild Air Force Base near Spokane. Number 1 Auto Transport coordinates PCS shipments to and from every major Washington installation.
We work around orders timing, lock quotes early, and discount military rates for active duty, reserve, National Guard, and veterans. Your assigned agent stays with the move from quote through delivery. One number, one person, one record. Full details on our military auto transport page.
Washington Military Installations We Serve
Joint Base Lewis-McChord
Puget Sound region, WA. Home of I Corps and the 62nd Airlift Wing, and the only Army power-projection platform west of the Rockies.
Naval Base Kitsap
Bremerton, Bangor, and Keyport, WA. The third largest installation in the U.S. Navy. Bremerton is homeport to Carrier Strike Group 3, and Bangor is home to Submarine Group 9.
Naval Air Station Whidbey Island
Oak Harbor, WA. The sole naval aviation support in the Pacific Northwest, and home to most of the Navy's EA-18G Growler squadrons.
Naval Station Everett
Everett, WA. On Possession Sound. Home to Navy surface ships and the staffs of Carrier Strike Group 11 and Destroyer Squadron 9.
Fairchild Air Force Base
Spokane County, WA, about 12 miles west of Spokane. The 92nd Air Refueling Wing flies the KC-135 Stratotanker.
Yakima Training Center
Eastern Washington. A 505-square-mile sub-installation of JBLM, the military's premier training destination in the Pacific Northwest.
Camp Murray
Tacoma, WA, off I-5 exit 122. Home of Washington National Guard headquarters and the 194th Wing.
Timing Your Shipment Around PCS Orders
PCS season runs May to August. Carrier supply tightens, prices rise, and pickup dates fill weeks ahead. Book 3 to 4 weeks out once orders are in hand. We can hold a quote for 7 days while you finalize report dates.
Most of the state's military work sits on Puget Sound. Joint Base Lewis-McChord and Camp Murray share the I-5 corridor near Tacoma, and Naval Base Kitsap sits across the water in Bremerton, Bangor, and Keyport. Naval Station Everett and NAS Whidbey Island are to the north. East of the Cascades, Yakima Training Center covers 505 square miles, and Fairchild sits about 12 miles west of Spokane. A move between the two sides of the state crosses a mountain pass, so winter orders need a day or two of slack.
Military Discount and Who Qualifies
Military rate available for: active duty, reserve, National Guard, retired service members, and veterans. Mention your status on the call or in the quote form. Government bills of lading and DPS reimbursement requests are supported.

Need Oversized Transport to Washington with a Lowboy or Step Deck Trailer?
Washington's thriving logging, construction, and high-tech industries require the constant, efficient movement of heavy equipment. When you need industrial units moved, you can rely on the Washington equipment transport experts at Number 1 Auto Transport to keep your operations on schedule.
Construction and timber companies across the Evergreen State rely on our experienced team to safely move: Logging Equipment: Skidders and feller bunchers. Construction Units: Loaders, cranes, excavators, and graders.
We save you time by ensuring your skilled tradesmen and women are not tied up with transport logistics.
The veteran drivers in our carrier network are experts in managing the unique challenges of oversized freight.
What Moves on Lowboy and Step Deck Trailers
- Skidders and feller bunchers
- Loaders, cranes, excavators, and graders
- Dozers, backhoes, and skid steers
- Lifts and aerial booms
- Combines, tractors, and farm implements
- Industrial generators and pumps
Specialized Heavy Equipment Transport
Lowboy and Step Deck Trailers
Our carrier network includes the necessary lowboy carrier and step deck options to handle loads with unique dimensions.
Expert Handling
Drivers are trained to manage oversized loads and high gross tonnage, skilled in moving heavy equipment safely in and out of complex job sites and navigating busy highways with unique loads.
Permits and Pass Rules
Carriers in our network handle WSDOT oversize and overweight permits, route surveys, and escort vehicles. Permit loads may not cross a mountain pass while chain or traction advisory signs are up.
Washington Port Logistics
The Northwest Seaport Alliance, a partnership of the Port of Seattle and the Port of Tacoma, manages the container, breakbulk, auto, and some bulk terminals in both harbors. Everett handles oversized cargo to the north, and Vancouver brings in cars on the Columbia River. We pick up from and deliver to every terminal.
Terminal 46, Seattle
Seattle, WA. An 87-acre auto and breakbulk terminal in the Seattle Harbor, minutes from Union Pacific and BNSF rail yards and the interstates.
Terminal 7, Tacoma
Tacoma, WA. A 46-acre auto, breakbulk, and container terminal in the Tacoma Harbor, with near-dock rail.
Port of Everett Seaport
Everett, WA. 25 miles north of Seattle. The region's premier breakbulk facility for high, heavy, and oversized cargo.
Port of Vancouver USA
Vancouver, WA. A rail-served auto facility moves cars by ship, road, and rail, and the port is the largest Subaru import gateway in North America.
Equipment that does not fit on a step deck moves on a Removable Gooseneck (RGN) trailer. The front detaches so tracked machinery rolls on without ramps. Best for excavators, dozers, and equipment without functional drive systems.
Need a Washington heavy haul quote? Send equipment specs and route. We come back with a price-locked rate.

When Each Option Makes Sense
-

Open Transport in Washington
Considering open auto transport for your Washington car shipping needs? This is our most popular and cost-effective shipping option. Open carriers are the standard double-decker carriers you see transporting new vehicles for dealerships nationwide. Your vehicle will be secured using state-of-the-art equipment and arrive at its destination efficiently. Key Benefits of Open Transport: Affordability: Open transport is the most budget-friendly method, often saving you hundreds compared to enclosed shipping. Speed and Availability: Due to the large network of open carriers, this service typically offers faster scheduling and pickup windows. Vehicle Protection: Your vehicle is secured from road vibration and prevents the accrual of excess mileage. Most vehicles shipped via open transport are delivered within seven days of departure, depending on the route and distance.
-

Enclosed Transport in Washington
The safest way to transport your car to Washington is via enclosed auto transport, which shields your vehicle from rain, sleet, and snow; wind-blown debris and road salt; extreme temperature fluctuations; and dirt and dust on long-haul routes. This premium service is a wise investment, especially for classic, luxury, or high-value vehicles. Enclosed Transport Options: We offer two types of enclosed auto transport for maximum protection. Soft-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: These carriers are covered by a heavy, durable canvas, protecting your car from wind, rain, debris, and other elements. Hard-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: These carriers provide the same benefits as soft-sided but with a solid wall construction, offering superior security and protection in the unlikely event your car is exposed to possible damage during transportation.
Washington weather note. Washington's climate is highly varied due to the Cascade Mountains. Western Washington has a mild but wet climate, while Eastern Washington experiences a far greater temperature range, from Arctic cold fronts in winter to severe heat waves in summer. Choosing an enclosed carrier is the best way to protect your vehicle from this diverse weather and unpredictable road hazards.
Not sure which one fits? Tell us the year, make, and model and we will say so straight.
Should You Drive or Ship Your Car to or from Washington?
No route guide covers a Washington lane yet, so we do not publish a driving cost for one. Here is how the two options compare on everything except the price.
Driving vs. Shipping, Side by Side
| Factor | Driving yourself | Shipping your car |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Fuel, lodging, meals, tolls, and wear, paid as you go | One quote, locked at booking |
| Miles on the odometer | Every mile of the trip, plus any detours | Zero miles added |
| Days | Your own days behind the wheel, then a trip back | 2 to 3 days under 1,000 miles and 7 to 10 days from 1,750 to 2,500 miles, none of it yours |
| Risk | Chain rules on Snoqualmie and Stevens passes, winter ice on I-90, rain-soaked I-5, and fatigue | Covered by the carrier's cargo insurance |
| Effort | Route planning, hotels, tire chains for the passes, and a flight home | Picked up and delivered for you |
The transit windows are the ones this page has always published. Your quote supplies the shipping price, so the table leaves dollar figures out.
The bottom line. Driving can make sense on a short regional run in good weather. For a cross-country move, a winter trip over the Cascades, or a car you want kept off the road, shipping gives you the days back and keeps the miles off the car.

Moving to Washington: What to Do After Your Car Arrives
Most people shipping into Washington are relocating or reporting to JBLM or a Navy base. Washington runs on one 30-day clock, and the driver license has to come before the plates. Here is what actually applies.
New Washington residents have 30 days after the move to get a Washington driver license and register the vehicle. The license comes first, because you need it before you can register, and driver and vehicle licensing happen at separate offices. Service members stationed here who are not Washington residents can keep the registration from their home of record.
Use Tax Is Waived on a Car You Owned More Than 90 Days
Washington charges use tax when a vehicle is first licensed here, at a rate set by where the owner lives. New residents may be exempt. The car must be a personal vehicle that you acquired and used in another state more than 90 days before moving, and it must be licensed here within 30 days of the move. Motor homes, trailers, and off-road vehicles do not qualify. If you do owe the tax, sales or use tax you paid in another state counts against it.
Every tab fee starts with a basic fee of $43.25, then weight, location, and taxes set the total. The title application is $15, an original plate is $50 per plate, and a $50 out-of-state service fee pays for a check that the car is not stolen. In the Sound Transit District in parts of King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties, you also pay a regional transit tax of 1.1 percent of the car's depreciated value with your tabs.
No Emissions Test, and No Inspection for a Clean Title
Washington's emission check program ended on January 1, 2020, after 38 years, so there is no emissions test to schedule. A State Patrol inspection applies only to a vehicle with a total loss or salvage history, and it costs $65. A car with a clean out-of-state title skips it. Bring the title, and write down the odometer reading before you go in.
Insurance and License
Washington requires liability coverage of at least $25,000 for injury or death of one person, $50,000 for two or more people in one collision, and $10,000 for damage to other people's property. Personal injury protection is optional coverage you can add.
The Washington license is due within 30 days of the move. You count as a resident once you have a Washington address, register to vote here, receive state benefits or in-state tuition, or buy any Washington license at resident rates. Book an appointment at a driver licensing office and bring proof of identity, including your out-of-state license. Depending on where you are moving from, you may need to take a driving test.
Take the out-of-state title, your new Washington license, and the odometer reading to a vehicle licensing office. If you will cross the SR 520 or Tacoma Narrows bridges, DOL suggests a Good to Go! toll account too. Check current fees with the Washington State Department of Licensing before you go.
Washington Seasonal Shipping Guide
Washington's busiest shipping months run May through September. Snowbirds head south to the California desert in the fall and come home in the spring, and the Cascade passes set the pace all winter. Here is what to expect month by month.

Summer Is the Busy Season
Washington's peak moving season runs May through September, the window our FAQ below names. PCS orders at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and the Navy bases run May to August inside it. Booking 1 to 2 weeks out often gets better pricing and a firmer spot, and 3 to 4 weeks is safer on PCS orders.
Snowbirds and Mountain Passes
Our California page names the Northwest among the markets that send snowbirds to the desert resorts. They head south in October and November and come home in March and April. From November to April, the Cascade passes decide how fast trucks cross the state. See our snowbird auto transport page for booking lead times and price locking.
| Window | Demand | What drives it | Booking lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| May to September | Peak | Peak moving season, as our FAQ below says. PCS orders also run May to August | 1 to 2 weeks, 3 to 4 on PCS orders |
| October to November | Snowbirds head south | Northwest snowbirds head to the California desert for the winter | 3 to 4 weeks |
| December to February | Off-peak | The late fall and winter off-peak season our FAQ names. Pass weather sets the pace | At least 2 to 7 days |
| March to April | Snowbirds head home | Cars come back north from the California desert | 2 weeks in March, 3 to 4 in April |
Washington has no route guide, and this page publishes no seasonal figure beyond the windows in its FAQ. The May to September peak and the winter off-peak come from that FAQ. The snowbird windows and their lead times come from our California auto transport page, which names the Northwest among its snowbird markets, and the PCS window and lead time from our Texas auto transport page. We publish no seasonal premium for Washington, so your quote carries the real number.

Washington Weather Factors
Snoqualmie and Stevens Pass Chain Rules
From November 1 to April 1, trucks over 10,000 pounds must carry chains on I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass and US 2 over Stevens Pass. The passes average more than 450 inches of snow a winter, and avalanche control typically holds traffic 30 minutes to two hours.
Atmospheric Rivers on the West Side
Heavy fall and winter rain floods rivers and roads on the west side. In December 2025, a powerful atmospheric river flooded major roadways, and washouts and mudslides closed US 2 at Stevens Pass. In 2007, flooding closed 20 miles of I-5 near Chehalis for several days.
Winter on I-90 East of the Cascades
East of the mountains, ice and blowing snow do the damage. In February 2020, icy roads led to more than 150 collisions in the region, most of them on I-90 through Adams and Spokane counties.
Storm Response Plan
Monitor
We track mountain pass reports, chain requirements, and flood watches several days out and flag any Washington shipment in the path.
Communicate
Your dedicated agent calls 24 to 48 hours before the affected pickup or delivery window.
Hold, Reroute, or Refund
No penalty for weather-driven changes. We reroute, delay, or refund based on your call.
Booking lead time during peak Washington windows: 1 to 2 weeks from May to September and 3 to 4 weeks on PCS orders. 3 to 4 weeks for the October to November snowbird run and in April, 2 weeks in March. At least 2 to 7 days the rest of the year.
Washington Auto Transport Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about our Washington car shipping service. For everything else, see our auto transport FAQ.
What is the average cost of shipping a car to or from Washington?
The cost to ship a car to or from Washington typically ranges from $800 to $1,500 for standard vehicles on an open carrier, depending heavily on the distance. For example, a coast-to-coast move (like Florida to Washington) will be near the higher end, while a shorter regional move (like California to Washington) will be lower. Factors affecting your price include vehicle size, transport type (open or enclosed), and current fuel prices.
How long does it take to ship a car to or from Washington?
Transit time for Washington car shipping depends on the distance. Regional Moves (under 1,000 miles): Typically 1 to 4 days. Cross-Country Moves (over 1,500 miles): Typically 4 to 9 days. This is an estimate; unexpected weather, traffic, or remote locations can cause minor delays.
What types of vehicles can Number 1 Auto Transport ship to or from Washington?
We transport a wide range of vehicles, including standard cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, motorcycles, classic cars, luxury vehicles, and large or oversized vehicles. Whether it's a daily driver or a high-value collector's item, we offer the right service (Open or Enclosed) to meet your needs.
Can I transport a vehicle to or from Washington if it's not running (inoperable)?
Yes, we can ship a vehicle that is not running, but you must inform us when getting your quote. Non-running vehicles require specialized equipment (like a winch) to load and unload, which will result in a slightly higher fee. The vehicle must be able to roll, steer, and brake to be transported.
Can I pack personal belongings in my car when transporting it to or from Washington?
We strongly advise against placing personal belongings in the vehicle. Most carriers are licensed only to transport vehicles, and personal items are NOT covered by the carrier's cargo insurance. If you must leave items, they are typically limited to 100 lbs., must be kept in the trunk or below the window line, and are done so at your own risk.
Does my vehicle need to have license plates when shipping it to or from Washington?
No, your vehicle does not need to have current license plates to be shipped by an auto transport carrier.
How should I prepare my car before shipping it?
To ensure a smooth and safe process for your Washington auto transport: Clean the vehicle inside and out (this allows for an accurate inspection). Document existing damage with photos. Leave only about ¼ tank of fuel (less weight is safer and required by law). Remove all personal belongings and toll/pass devices. Check all fluids and ensure the battery is charged.
What is the cheapest way to transport a car to or from Washington?
The most cost-effective way to ship a car is by choosing Open Auto Transport. This is the standard, most common method and costs significantly less than enclosed transport. You can also save money by scheduling transport during the off-peak season (usually late fall/winter) and being flexible with your pickup and delivery dates.
Is my vehicle insured when using a Washington car shipping service?
Yes. All carriers we work with must carry a minimum level of insurance as required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Your shipping quote includes full coverage cargo insurance that protects your vehicle against damage during transit. The specifics of the coverage are detailed in your Bill of Lading.
How do I get a quote for shipping my car to Washington?
Getting a quote for your Washington car shipping is fast and free. You can call us directly at 855.422.4141, or fill out our simple online quote form with your pickup/delivery locations and vehicle details.
How do I pay for my Washington auto transport service?
Number 1 Auto Transport offers a variety of convenient payment methods to ensure a smooth transaction for our customers. We accept all major credit cards for your convenience. Additionally, we facilitate secure electronic transfers through established platforms (Zelle, Venmo, Cashapp, Paypal) as well as ACH and wire transfers. For alternative payment preferences, certified and bank checks are also accepted.
What documents do I need to provide to ship my car?
You do not need to provide any documents to ship your car. However, it is recommended to sign a Bill of Lading before the carrier leaves.
What happens upon pick-up and delivery of my car?
At both pickup and delivery, you (or a designated contact) will meet the driver and perform a detailed, joint inspection of the vehicle. You will both sign the Bill of Lading (BOL), which documents the exact condition of the vehicle. At delivery, you will pay the remaining balance to the driver.
How far in advance do I need to schedule my Washington car shipping service?
We recommend scheduling your transport at least 2 to 7 days in advance of your preferred pickup date. Booking further out (1 to 2 weeks) often results in better pricing and guarantees you a spot, especially during peak moving season (May through September).
Do I have to register my car in Washington after it arrives?
Yes, if you are moving here. You have 30 days after the move to get a Washington driver license and register the car, and the license comes first. Use tax is waived on a personal car you acquired and used in another state more than 90 days before the move. Washington ended emissions testing on January 1, 2020, and a car with a clean out-of-state title needs no State Patrol inspection.
