Have You Considered Shipping Your Car to Nevada with Number 1 Auto Transport?

Everyone knows about the glitz and glamour of the Vegas Strip. It's one of the most popular vacation destinations in the country. But there's plenty more to Nevada's state, from Reno's entertainment to the dunes of Winnemucca. Nevada is a great place to live, settle down, and visit.

Nevada is one of the most centralized states in the country. Of the three million+ residents, two-thirds live in the eight most prominent cities. Seven of those cities are in Clark County, meaning that a single county holds more than two-thirds of the state's population.

Almost every major employer in Nevada is located in Las Vegas, most of which are casinos. However, Nevada is also a significant player in mining and cattle ranching. In 2017 alone, Nevada accounted for 71% of the gold produced in the U.S. and 5.6% globally!

Check out the Humboldt National Forest, Great Basin National Park, or the Pony Express National Historic Trail in the Northern half. Southern Nevada is home to Inyo and Toiyabe National Forests, Bootleg Canyon Mountain Bike Park, and the foreboding Death Valley National Park. If you can't find nature to suit your adventurous soul in Nevada, you just aren't looking hard enough!

Consider Number 1 Auto Transport for your Nevada move, delivering dependable and secure car transportation services. Our commitment to excellence ensures an easy journey, providing peace of mind from pickup to drop-off. Trust us to make your vehicle's move to or from Nevada smooth and simple.

How to Ship a Car to Nevada?

The best way to answer the question of "How to ship my car to Nevada" is to show you how we operate our auto shipping business. We understand that car owners in Nevada won't trust just any car shipping company to move their vehicle across states. They value experience and reputation. Here's how we do it:

  • First, once your order is placed, we'll initiate the process of moving a car to Nevada. This typically occurs within a week. We'll keep you informed with important details, such as the time and date of pickup, tracking number, and the truck driver's contact information.
  • Next, the truck driver will contact you to confirm delivery plans. The drivers in our carrier network are committed to treating all vehicles as if they were their own, prioritizing the protection of your car against any damage during delivery. Before the driver departs, you'll sign and receive a Bill of Lading.
  • Finally, upon the vehicle's arrival in Nevada, both you and the driver will inspect it for any damage. This is also the time when you will sign the final inspection report. It's that simple!

Nevada Auto Transport Routes, Transit Times, and Pricing

Depending on the car's location, most pickup windows are 24 to 72 hours from when the vehicle is ready to be picked up. This window could take up to 5 days in remote areas. Nevada car shipping turnaround time for a destination under 1,000 miles is 2 to 3 days. From 1,000 to 1,750 miles, the transit time is estimated to be 4 to 6 days. From 1,750 to 2,500 miles, the transit time is estimated at 7 to 10 days.

What Moves on Lowboy and Step Deck Trailers

  • Bulldozers, excavators, and industrial gear
  • Wheel loaders and dump trucks
  • Skid steers, backhoes, and compact track loaders
  • Cranes, lifts, and aerial booms
  • Combines, tractors, and farm implements
  • Industrial generators and pumps

Why Lowboy and RGN Transport Works for Nevada

  • Height Compliance

Lowboy decks sit 18 to 24 inches off the ground. Tall machinery clears bridges and overpasses on I-15 and I-80.

  • Stability and Capacity

Step deck and lowboy trailers carry the weight of full-size dozers, cranes, and combines without straining the suspension.

  • Permit and Escort Expertise

Carriers in our network handle Nevada oversize and overweight hauling permits, route surveys, escort vehicles, and restricted travel windows.

Equipment that does not fit on a step deck moves on a Removable Gooseneck (RGN) trailer. The front detaches so tracked machinery rolls on without ramps. Best for excavators, dozers, and equipment without functional drive systems.

Should You Drive or Ship Your Car to or from Nevada?

Driving it yourself looks cheap until you add it up. These figures come from our New York to Nevada route guide, for a one-way run of 2,400 to 2,700 miles.

The Hidden Cost of Driving It Yourself

Out-of-pocket cost to drive New York to Nevada
ExpenseTypical cost
Fuel$270 to $320
Meals and lodging$480 to $660
Tolls$40 to $80
Total out of pocket$790 to $1,060

Typical figures for a sedan, three nights on the road, and four days of driving. The total leaves out the flight back, 2,500 miles on the odometer, and your time.

Driving vs. Shipping, Side by Side

Moving to Nevada: What to Do After Your Car Arrives

Most people shipping into Nevada are relocating or reporting to Nellis, Creech, or Fallon. Nevada catches newcomers out, because two things have to be in hand before the DMV will register the car: a VIN inspection and a Nevada insurance policy. Here is what actually applies.

Register the car within 30 days of becoming a Nevada resident, or when you get your Nevada driver license, whichever comes first. The license runs on the same 30-day clock. Active duty members who are residents of another state do not have to register here.

The VIN Inspection and the Emissions Test Come First

Every car coming from another state gets a VIN inspection before Nevada will register it. It is free at a DMV office, and the Las Vegas, Henderson, Reno, and Carson City offices have a VIN station outside the main building. A sworn officer can also complete the Vehicle Inspection Certificate, form VP 015, and some authorized businesses do it for a small fee. Get it done before your DMV appointment, not during it.

Emissions testing applies only in the urban areas of Clark County, meaning the Las Vegas Valley, and Washoe County, meaning Reno and Sparks. Gasoline vehicles from 1968 on test every year, and so do diesels up to 14,000 pounds. A new car skips the test for its first three registrations, and a hybrid for its first five model years. Electric cars are exempt. A test is good for 90 days and costs up to $75.50 for a light-duty gasoline car in Clark County and $71.50 in Washoe. The DMV's new resident checklist has no line for a safety inspection.

What You Owe Nevada on a Car You Already Own

You do not pay Nevada sales tax on a car you have been driving in another state. The Department of Taxation says that for "vehicles with substantial prior use in another state and subsequently moved to Nevada, there is no further tax due."

The charge that does surprise people is the Governmental Services Tax, due with every registration. It is 4 percent of a value set at 35 percent of the original MSRP, not today's value. That value drops 5 percent after the first year and 10 percent a year after that, down to a floor of 15 percent. The minimum tax is $16. Clark and Churchill counties add a supplemental tax of 1 cent per dollar of the same value. Active duty members stationed here who are residents of another state are fully exempt, and a spouse can use the exemption too.

Insurance and License

Nevada requires liability coverage of at least $25,000 for injury or death of one person, $50,000 for two or more people, and $20,000 for property damage in any one accident. Out-of-state insurance is not accepted. The policy must be written for Nevada by a company authorized to do business here, and the DMV checks it electronically. There is no grace period, so have the Nevada policy in force before you go.

Switch your out-of-state license to a Nevada one within 30 days of moving. If you are 21 or older with a valid U.S. license, you may skip the knowledge and skills tests. Active duty members, spouses, and dependents do not have to transfer.

Bring your current registration, the VIN inspection, the emissions report if the car is based in urban Clark or Washoe County, Nevada proof of insurance, a current odometer reading, and your out-of-state plates. A first-time Nevada title is $28.25 and passenger registration is $33, plus the Governmental Services Tax and plate fees. Check current fees with the Nevada DMV before you go.

Snowbird, PCS, and Donner Pass Windows

October and November pull carriers onto snowbird routes toward Las Vegas and Laughlin, and snowbirds start home in March. April and May bring spring moves and the first PCS orders, and PCS season runs May through August. December through February is the cheapest window into Las Vegas, while Donner Pass makes it the slow one for Reno. Our snowbird car transport page explains why the same carriers serve both.

Popular Seasonal Routes To and From Nevada

  • New York City to Las Vegas
  • Roslyn to Henderson
  • Buffalo to Reno
  • Sacramento to Las Vegas
  • Nevada to and from Florida

Nevada Weather Factors

  • Donner Pass Chain Controls

Reno-bound trucks from California cross the Sierra on I-80 over Donner, where chain controls run from November through April. Under Caltrans rules, even the lowest chain level covers every vehicle except passenger cars and light trucks on snow tires. A loaded car hauler chains up or waits, and a Reno pickup or delivery can slip a day.

  • Las Vegas Valley Heat

The National Weather Service in Las Vegas says the city keeps getting warmer, and summer afternoons in the valley run hot. Carriers load and unload early in the day. It changes the appointment time, not the transit window.

  • Summer Monsoon Storms

July, August, and September are the monsoon months in Las Vegas, the National Weather Service says. When a storm sits over the valley, the driver waits it out rather than running through it.

Storm Response Plan

  1. Monitor

We track Sierra storms and I-80 chain controls, valley heat, and summer monsoon storms several days out and flag any Nevada shipment in the path.

  2. Communicate

Nevada Auto Transport Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we get most on Nevada moves. For everything else, see our auto transport FAQ.

  • What is the cost of shipping a car to Nevada?

The cost of shipping a car to Nevada depends on several factors, including distance, location, trailer type, vehicle details, and seasonality. Prices fluctuate throughout the year, and busy seasons may lead to slightly higher costs. In order to get the most accurate quote, you should provide the following information: your car's type and specifications, origin and destination cities, flexible shipping dates (if possible), and preferred trailer type (open or enclosed).

  • How long does it take to ship a car to or from Nevada?

Most pickup windows are 24 to 72 hours from when the vehicle is ready to be picked up. In remote areas, it could take up to 5 days. Here are some estimated transit times based on distance: under 1,000 miles, 2 to 3 days. 1,000 to 1,750 miles, 4 to 6 days. 1,750 to 2,500 miles, 7 to 10 days.

  • What types of vehicles can I transport to or from Nevada?

Number 1 Auto Transport handles all your vehicle relocation needs, from everyday cars and trucks like coupes, sedans, SUVs, and pickups to minivans and passenger vans. We've got you covered for specialty vehicles too, including electric cars, motorcycles, and all-terrain rides like ATVs and UTVs. Need your golf cart or a John Deere Tractor shipped? If it has wheels, we can ship it!

  • Can I transport a car to or from Nevada if it's not running?

Yes, carriers in our network are equipped with a winch to help pull the vehicle onto the trailer. Please let your dedicated shipping agent know if the car breaks, rolls, and steers.

  • Can I pack my car when transporting it to or from Nevada?

While some personal belongings can be transported inside your vehicle for your convenience, there are restrictions. The total weight must be under 100 pounds, and for security reasons, they should be stored in the trunk or back seat, remaining below the window line. It's important to note that any personal belongings shipped within the car are not covered by the standard transport insurance in case of damage or loss.

  • Does my vehicle need to have plates when shipping it to or from Nevada?

No, but sometimes a carrier will have to meet in a parking lot due to the size of his truck and the destination street layout. If so, you will most likely have to drive the car a few blocks.

  • How should I prep my car before shipping it?

It's recommended to wash your car so the transport carrier can do a proper inspection at pickup. Remove any toll tags so you don't incur fees while in transit. It's also best to remove any loose parts to prevent any damage during transport.

  • What is the cheapest way to transport a car to or from Nevada?

The cheapest way to ship a car to or from Nevada is on an open car trailer.

  • Should I drive or ship my car to Nevada?

If the trip is a short distance, you should consider driving it to save money. Shipping is ideal for long distances, valuable cars, or if you don't want the hassle of driving yourself.

  • Is my vehicle insured when using a Nevada car shipping service?

Yes, all the carriers in our network are vetted and screened with the DOT and FMCSA to make sure they have up to date and adequate cargo coverage to fully protect your car during transport.

  • How do I get a quote for shipping my car to Nevada?

Most car shipping carriers request a 3-day (weekday) window for pickup. Once you have your desired pickup window, provide us with the year, make, model, and we will be able to provide you with a Nevada car shipping rate.

  • How do I pay for my Nevada auto transport service?

Number 1 Auto Transport offers a variety of convenient payment methods to ensure a smooth transaction for our customers. We accept all major credit cards for your convenience. Additionally, we facilitate secure electronic transfers through established platforms (Zelle, Venmo, Cashapp, Paypal) as well as ACH and wire transfers. For alternative payment preferences, certified and bank checks are also accepted.

  • What documents do I need to provide to ship my car?

You do not need to provide any documents to ship your car. However, it is recommended to sign a Bill of Lading before the carrier leaves.

  • What happens upon pick-up and delivery of my car?

The transport carrier will conduct a thorough inspection with you at the predetermined pickup location, noting any existing dents or scratches. The same inspection will be done upon delivery.

  • How far in advance do I need to schedule my Nevada car shipping service?

To ensure we can fulfill your preferred delivery timeframe, scheduling your car shipment with ample lead time is highly recommended. Ideally, booking your transport at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance allows for optimal planning and execution.

  • Do I have to register my car in Nevada after it arrives?

Yes, if you are moving here. Register within 30 days of becoming a resident, or when you get your Nevada driver license, whichever comes first. The car needs a VIN inspection first, free at a DMV office, and a Nevada insurance policy, because out-of-state insurance is not accepted. Cars based in urban Clark and Washoe counties also need an emissions test. There is no sales tax on a car you already drove in another state, but you will pay the Governmental Services Tax.
