How to Ship a Car to Georgia?
The best way to answer the question of "How to ship my car to Georgia" is to show you how we operate our auto shipping business. We understand that car owners in Georgia won't trust just any car shipping company to move their vehicle across states. They value experience and reputation. Here's how we do it:
- First, once your order is placed, we'll initiate the process of moving a car to Georgia. This typically occurs within a week. We'll keep you informed with important details, such as the time and date of pickup, tracking number, and the truck driver's contact information.
- Next, the truck driver will contact you to confirm delivery plans. The drivers in our carrier network are committed to treating all vehicles as if they were their own, prioritizing the protection of your car against any damage during delivery. Before the driver departs, you'll sign and receive a Bill of Lading.
- Finally, upon the vehicle's arrival in Georgia, both you and the driver will inspect it for any damage. This is also the time when you will sign the final inspection report. It's that simple!

When Each Option Makes Sense
-

Professional securing: your vehicle will be secured using state-of-the-art equipment, ensuring its stability and safety throughout the journey. Timely delivery: expect your vehicle to arrive at its destination in Georgia within seven days of departure. Enclosed Transport in Georgia
Opting for enclosed auto transport when shipping your car to Georgia is a prudent decision. This method shields your vehicle from wind-blown debris, persistent sun damage, and potential harm from rain and snowfall. Whether you're transporting a luxury car, a vintage vehicle, or simply want to ensure maximum protection, enclosed auto transport offers the safest way to transport your car to Georgia. Choosing enclosed auto transport for your Georgia-bound vehicle is not just a smart investment; it's a commitment to the safety and preservation of your vehicle, regardless of the season or weather conditions.
Georgia weather note. Georgia's climate presents a unique challenge for auto transport. The state experiences hot, humid summers and cooler winters, with occasional hurricanes threatening coastal areas. Even though snowfall is rare, navigating Georgia's roads during these times can be difficult. This variability in weather conditions underscores the importance of choosing an auto transport company that ensures the safety and protection of your vehicle throughout the year.
Enclosed auto transport comes in two varieties, each offering distinct advantages. Soft-sided enclosed auto transport: this option utilizes heavy canvas to cover the carriers, safeguarding your car from wind-blown debris, rain, sleet, snow, and other environmental elements. It's an effective solution for general protection against the elements. Hard-sided enclosed auto transport: for the utmost protection, hard-sided carriers are the way to go. They provide a solid barrier around your vehicle, ensuring safety even in the unlikely event of exposure to potential damage during transportation.
Not sure which one fits? Tell us the year, make, and model and we will say so straight.
Should You Drive or Ship Your Car to or from Georgia?
Driving it looks cheap on a short lane, and it is. These figures come from our Atlanta to Dallas route guide, for a 780-mile run down I-20.
The Hidden Cost of Driving It Yourself
| Expense | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Fuel | $85 to $105 |
| Meals | $60 to $90 |
| Lodging, one night | $110 to $160 |
| Tolls | $0 to $20 |
| Total out of pocket | $255 to $375 |
Typical figures for a sedan with one night on the road, not published rates. The total leaves out the flight back, 780 miles on the odometer, and a day and a half.
Driving vs. Shipping, Side by Side
| Factor | Driving yourself | Shipping your car |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $255 to $375, plus the flight home | $650 to $950 open, locked at booking |
| Vehicle wear | Adds 750 to 850 miles | Adds zero miles to the odometer |
| Time | Two days with a night on the road | 2 to 4 days, none of it yours |
| Risk | Winter ice past Shreveport, spring storms in Mississippi, fatigue | Covered by the carrier's cargo insurance |
| Effort | Route planning, a hotel, and a flight home | Picked up and delivered for you |
The bottom line. Driving makes sense if the road trip is the point. If you are starting a job or sending a car ahead of the movers, shipping costs a few hundred more and gives the day and a half back.

Moving to Georgia: What to Do After Your Car Arrives
Most people shipping into Georgia are relocating. Once the car is in your driveway, Georgia puts you on a 30-day clock, and the tax works differently than most states. Here is what actually applies.
New Georgia residents have 30 days from the date they moved to register the vehicle at the county tag office, and 30 days to get a Georgia driver license. The license comes first, because the tag office asks for it.
Georgia Charges a One-Time Title Tax, Not a Sales Tax
Georgia replaced sales tax and the yearly ad valorem tax on vehicles with a one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax, or TAVT. The standard rate is 7 percent of the vehicle's fair market value. New residents pay TAVT at a reduced rate of 3 percent on a vehicle they already own, under a law effective July 1, 2019. The title fee is $18 and the annual registration fee is $20.
Some military veterans are exempt from TAVT, and non-resident service members file a Service Member Affidavit, form PT-472NS, instead. Pay by the last day of your registration period to avoid a 10 percent penalty.
No Safety Inspection, but Metro Atlanta Needs an Emissions Test
Georgia has no safety inspection. Emissions testing applies to gasoline-powered passenger vehicles registered in the 13-county Atlanta metro area: Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding, and Rockdale. Residents of those counties are required to have the emissions inspection before registering. Newer and older model years are exempt, so check the current model year rule with Georgia's Clean Air Force before you book the test.
Insurance and License
Georgia requires liability coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per incident for bodily injury, and $25,000 per incident for property damage. Motor vehicle owners are required by law to maintain continuous Georgia liability insurance on vehicles with an active registration, so switch the policy before you go to the tag office. The driver license transfer runs on the same 30-day clock. Residents who miss the registration deadline can be fined up to $100.
Bring the out-of-state title, your Georgia license, proof of Georgia insurance, and the emissions certificate if your county needs one. Fees and forms are on the Georgia Department of Revenue site.

Georgia Weather Factors
Hurricane Season
June 1 to November 30, peaking around September 10. Savannah, Brunswick, and the coast are most affected. Lock pickup windows early.
North Georgia Winter Storms
Winter storms often affect North Georgia and bring ice, downed power lines, and blocked roads. A quarter inch of ice can shut I-75 and I-85 through the metro.
Spring Severe Weather
March through May is peak severe weather season across the Deep South. A driver holds rather than runs through it.
The Atlanta Perimeter
I-285 and the downtown connector can add an hour to a pickup at rush hour. Most of the metro loads in the driveway; Buckhead high-rises meet the truck at a nearby lot.
Storm Response Plan
Monitor
We track named storms on the coast and ice in North Georgia several days out and flag any Georgia shipment in the path.
Communicate
Your dedicated agent calls 24 to 48 hours before an affected pickup or delivery window.
Hold, Reroute, or Refund
No penalty for weather-driven changes. We reroute, delay, or refund based on your call.
Booking lead time during peak Georgia windows: 3 to 4 weeks for PCS season and the fall snowbird rush, 3 weeks for the spring return. 1 to 2 weeks in September, January, and February.

If the trip is a short distance, you should consider driving it to save money. Shipping is ideal for long distances, valuable cars, or if you don't want the hassle of driving yourself.
Is my vehicle insured when using a Georgia car shipping service?
Yes, all the carriers in our network are vetted and screened with the DOT and FMCSA to make sure they have up to date and adequate cargo coverage to fully protect your car during transport.
How do I get a quote for shipping my car to Georgia?
Most car shipping carriers request a 3-day (weekday) window for pickup. Once you have your desired pickup window, provide us with the year, make, model, and we will be able to provide you with a Georgia car shipping rate.
How do I pay for my Georgia auto transport service?
Number 1 Auto Transport offers a variety of convenient payment methods to ensure a smooth transaction for our customers. We accept all major credit cards for your convenience. Additionally, we facilitate secure electronic transfers through established platforms (Zelle, Venmo, Cashapp, Paypal) as well as ACH and wire transfers. For alternative payment preferences, certified and bank checks are also accepted.
What documents do I need to provide to ship my car?
You do not need to provide any documents to ship your car. However, it is recommended to sign a Bill of Lading before the carrier leaves.
What happens upon pick-up and delivery of my car?
The transport carrier will conduct a thorough inspection with you at the predetermined pickup location, noting any existing dents or scratches. The same inspection will be done upon delivery.
How far in advance do I need to schedule my Georgia car shipping service?
To ensure we can fulfill your preferred delivery timeframe, scheduling your car shipment with ample lead time is highly recommended. Ideally, booking your transport at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance allows for optimal planning and execution.
Do I have to register my car in Georgia after it arrives?
Yes, if you are moving here. New residents have 30 days from the move to register at the county tag office and 30 days to get a Georgia license, which the tag office asks for first. You pay a one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax at the new resident rate of 3 percent instead of sales tax. There is no safety inspection, but the 13 metro Atlanta counties require an emissions test before registration.
