How to Ship a Car to North Carolina?
The best way to answer the question of "How to ship my car to North Carolina" is to show you how we operate our auto shipping business. We know car owners won't trust just any car shipping company to move their vehicle across states. They want experience and reputation. Here's how we do it:
- First, once your order is placed, we'll start the process of moving a car to North Carolina. This usually happens within a week. We'll continue updating you on important information, including the time and date of pickup, tracking number, and the truck driver's number.
- Then, the truck driver will call you to finalize delivery plans. The drivers in our carrier network strive to take care of all vehicles carried as if they are their own. Protecting your car against any damage from delivery is their ultimate concern. You'll also sign and receive a Bill of Lading before the driver leaves.
- Finally, once the vehicle arrives in North Carolina, you and the driver will inspect the vehicle for any damage. This is also the time when you will sign the final inspection report. It's that simple!

Looking for a Lowboy or Step Deck Carrier in North Carolina?
As North Carolina hums with construction and development, the necessity to transport massive machinery across its diverse terrain takes center stage. Envision the challenge of moving construction equipment safely and securely. This is where the expertise of a North Carolina transport company shines, and lowboy carriers emerge as the unsung heroes of the construction industry.
Introducing the lowboy carriers in Number 1 Auto Transport's network, the champions of transporting what truly constructs North Carolina. These aren't just ordinary trucks; they are colossal vehicles specially trained to handle oversized loads and staggering tonnage. With drivers skilled at navigating busy highways and smoothly delivering heavy equipment to job sites, it's evident why Number 1 Auto stands out as the preferred choice. When it comes to the crucial task of transporting what shapes North Carolina's infrastructure, only the best will suffice.
What Moves on Lowboy and Step Deck Trailers
- Construction equipment and massive machinery
- Excavators, dozers, and wheel loaders
- Skid steers, backhoes, and compact track loaders
- Cranes, lifts, and aerial booms
- Combines, tractors, and farm implements
- Industrial generators and pumps
Why Lowboy and RGN Transport Works for North Carolina
Height Compliance
Lowboy decks sit 18 to 24 inches off the ground. Tall machinery clears bridges and overpasses on I-40, I-85, and I-77.
Stability and Capacity
Step deck and lowboy trailers carry the weight of full-size dozers, cranes, and combines without straining the suspension.
Permit and Escort Expertise
Carriers in our network handle NCDOT oversize and overweight permits, route surveys, escort vehicles, and restricted travel windows.
Equipment that does not fit on a step deck moves on a Removable Gooseneck (RGN) trailer. The front detaches so tracked machinery rolls on without ramps. Best for excavators, dozers, and equipment without functional drive systems.
Need a North Carolina heavy haul quote? Send equipment specs and route. We come back with a price-locked rate.

|---|---|---|
| Share of US shipments | About 85% | About 15% |

Enclosed Transport in North Carolina
Working with an auto transport team that protects a vehicle from severe weather is important. After all, your car or truck is a major investment. By sending your vehicle via enclosed auto transport when looking for car transport in North Carolina, you'll avoid damage from wind-blown debris, damaging storms, and more.
North Carolina weather note. Unfortunately, everything that brings folk to North Carolina sometimes comes with a price. While it has a temperate climate, North Carolina is prone to tornadoes in its western portion. In contrast, the shoreline and the Outer Banks have been the target of some of the most severe hurricanes in United States history.
The safest way to transport your car to North Carolina is within an enclosed auto transport. There are two options for shipping your car via enclosed auto transport. Soft-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: The heavy canvas covering the carriers protects your car from wind-blown debris, rain, sleet, snow, and other elements. Hard-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: In addition to the advantages of soft-sided carriers, hard-sided carriers offer protection for your car in the unlikely event your car is exposed to possible damage during transportation.

Should You Drive or Ship Your Car to North Carolina?
Driving looks free until you add it up. These figures come from our New York to North Carolina route guide, for a one-way run of 600 to 750 miles with one night on the road.
The Hidden Cost of Driving It Yourself
| Expense | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Fuel | $70 to $90 |
| Meals and lodging | $150 to $250 |
| Tolls | $30 to $60 |
| Total out of pocket | $250 to $400 |
Typical figures for a sedan with one night on the road. Tolls cover the New Jersey Turnpike, Delaware, and Maryland. The total leaves out the flight back, 700 miles on the odometer, and two days.
Driving vs. Shipping, Side by Side
| Factor | Driving yourself | Shipping your car |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Fuel, hotel, meals, tolls, and a flight home | One quote, locked at booking |
| Vehicle wear | Adds 600 to 750 miles | Adds zero miles |
| Time | Two days driving, plus the trip back | A short flight south |
| Risk | I-95 traffic, Fancy Gap fog and ice, fatigue | Covered by the carrier's cargo insurance |
| Effort | Route planning, a hotel, and the drive | Picked up and delivered for you |
The bottom line. Driving is a fair choice if you have the two days and a way home. On PCS orders, a new job in Charlotte, or a second car heading south, shipping costs about the same once the flight and hotel land, and you keep the two days.

Moving to North Carolina: What to Do After Your Car Arrives
Most people shipping into North Carolina are relocating or reporting to a new duty station. North Carolina gives you more time than Florida or California, and two of its rules save new residents money and a trip. Here is what actually applies.
New North Carolina residents have 60 days after establishing residence to get a North Carolina driver license, then title and register the vehicle. Registration comes due sooner if you take a job here or when the reciprocity period for your old state's plates ends, usually 30 days.
The Highway Use Tax Is Capped at $250 for New Residents
North Carolina charges a 3 percent Highway Use Tax instead of sales tax when a car is titled. For new residents it is capped at $250, as long as the car has been titled in your name in another state for at least 90 days. Under 90 days, you get credit for tax paid to the other state.
Then there is county property tax. The DMV collects it for the county with the registration, or a Limited Registration Plate defers it 60 days.
Register First, Inspect Before the First Renewal
North Carolina still requires an annual safety inspection, but new residents can register without one and inspect before the first renewal. It costs $13.60, or $30 at most with emissions. No VIN verification is needed on an ordinary out-of-state title.
Emissions testing applies in 19 counties: Alamance, Buncombe, Cabarrus, Cumberland, Davidson, Durham, Forsyth, Franklin, Gaston, Guilford, Iredell, Johnston, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, New Hanover, Randolph, Rowan, Union, and Wake. The three newest model years under 70,000 miles, cars 20 years or older, diesels, and battery EVs are exempt. State law ends the program in all 19 counties once EPA gives final approval, which was still pending in October 2026. The safety inspection stays.
Insurance and License
North Carolina requires at least $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident, and $50,000 for property damage on policies issued or renewed after July 1, 2025. The insurer has to be licensed in North Carolina, and out-of-state policies are not accepted, so switch before the DMV visit. You also need a North Carolina driver license within 60 days. Get it first, because the title counter asks for it.
Bring the out-of-state title, form MVR-1, proof of North Carolina insurance, and your North Carolina license. Title is $66.75 and a plate is $46.25, or $53.75 in Durham, Orange, and Wake counties. Starting October 1, 2026, registration is electronic, so you get no plate sticker or printed card. Check current fees with the North Carolina DMV before you go.

April and May bring graduation moves and the first PCS orders. PCS season runs May through August at Fort Bragg and Camp Lejeune, and Fayetteville and Jacksonville trucks fill first. See our snowbird auto transport page for booking lead times and price locking.
| Window | Demand | What drives it | Booking lead time |
|---|---|---|---|

| December to February | Quiet | The cheapest window. Fancy Gap ice sends some carriers around by I-95 | 1 to 2 weeks |

North Carolina Weather Factors
Hurricane Season
June 1 to November 30, peaking from mid-August to late October. A storm at hurricane strength reaches the state about once every 3 years. Every part of the state, coast to mountains, has felt one in the past 20 years.
Mountain Snow
The state averages about 5 inches of snow a year, but the higher peaks of the Appalachians can get up to 100 inches. A driver holds rather than runs a mountain road in a storm.
Winter Ice
Winter storms here are hard to predict and often mix sleet and freezing rain. Bridges and overpasses ice first, so a carrier slows down or waits it out.
I-40 in the Pigeon River Gorge
Helene damaged a 12-mile stretch of I-40 in the gorge, up to the Tennessee line, in 2024. It reopened on March 1, 2025 with one lane each way and a 35 mph limit. Wide loads detour by I-77 and I-81. NCDOT expects all lanes back in late 2028.
Storm Response Plan
Monitor
We track named storms on the coast and snow and ice in the mountains and the Piedmont several days out, and flag any North Carolina shipment in the path.
Communicate
Your dedicated agent calls 24 to 48 hours before the affected pickup or delivery window.
Hold, Reroute, or Refund
No penalty for weather-driven changes. We reroute, delay, or refund based on your call.
Booking lead time during peak North Carolina windows: 3 weeks for the October to November snowbird run, 2 to 3 weeks from March to May. 2 weeks from June to August, and 1 to 2 weeks from December to February and in September.

The total weight must be under 100 pounds, and for security reasons, they should be stored in the trunk or back seat, remaining below the window line. It's important to note that any personal belongings shipped within the car are not covered by the standard transport insurance in case of damage or loss.
Does my vehicle need to have plates when shipping it to or from North Carolina?
No, but sometimes a carrier will have to meet in a parking lot due to the size of his truck and the destination street layout. If so, you will most likely have to drive the car a few blocks.
How should I prep my car before shipping it?
It's recommended to wash your car so the transport carrier can do a proper inspection at pickup. Remove any toll tags so you don't incur fees while in transit. It's also best to remove any loose parts to prevent any damage during transport.

To ensure we can fulfill your preferred delivery timeframe, scheduling your car shipment with ample lead time is highly recommended. Ideally, booking your transport at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance allows for optimal planning and execution.
Do I have to register my car in North Carolina after it arrives?
Yes, if you are moving here. You have 60 days after establishing residence to get a North Carolina driver license and then title and register the car, or sooner if you take a job here or your old state's reciprocity period ends. You can register before the safety inspection, which is due before your first renewal, and 19 counties add an emissions test.
