How to Ship a Car to New Jersey?

The best way to answer the question of "How to ship my car to New Jersey" is to show you how we operate our auto shipping business. We know car owners won't trust just any car shipping company to move their vehicle across states. They want experience and reputation. Here's how we do it:

  • First, once your order is placed, we'll start the process of moving a car to New Jersey. This usually happens within a week. We'll continue updating you on important information, including the time and date of pickup, tracking number, and the truck driver's number.
  • Then, the truck driver will call you to finalize delivery plans. The drivers in our carrier network strive to take care of all vehicles carried as if they are their own. Protecting your car against any damage from delivery is their ultimate concern. You'll also sign and receive a Bill of Lading before the driver leaves.
  • Finally, once the vehicle arrives in New Jersey, you and the driver will inspect the vehicle for any damage. This is also the time when you will sign the final inspection report. It's that simple!

Every shipment is insured. You can have peace of mind knowing that in the unlikely event your car suffers damage during transport to New Jersey, we have you covered. The carrier's cargo insurance, which we verify before dispatch, will get the claim handled quickly and efficiently.

Timing Your Shipment Around PCS Orders

Most service members get a 30 to 60 day window between orders and report date. Plan on 1 to 3 days to pickup. Two to three weeks of lead time leaves room if the date moves. PCS season runs May to August, when carrier supply tightens and pickup dates fill weeks ahead.

Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst takes most of the volume and sits near Turnpike exit 7. It combines McGuire Air Force Base, Fort Dix, and Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst, so Air Force, Army, and Navy moves land at one gate. Cape May stays steady all year, since every enlisted Coast Guardsman reports there for boot camp.

Military Discount and Who Qualifies

Active duty, reservists, National Guard, and veterans all qualify for a military rate. Mention your status on the quote form or when you call. Bring your CAC, military ID, or DD-214 at pickup. Spouses moving on PCS orders qualify at the same rate.

Lowboy or Step Deck Carriers to New Jersey

Thanks to a dense population with crowded streets and plenty of traffic, you get some headaches when moving heavy equipment. New Jersey is a rapidly growing state with growing needs for construction and development. Combine these two things, and you get a state that can be painful for construction crews to move heavy equipment.

Instead of dealing with the headaches and taking skilled laborers from work to move equipment, many New Jersey construction teams rely on the heavy equipment transport experts at Number 1 Auto for a helping hand. They work with a team that can move their backhoes, pavers, track skidders, excavators, and more from one site to the next.

Transporting heavy construction equipment is a serious business. The veteran lowboy carrier drivers in our network are trained to handle oversized loads and high gross tonnage. They are skilled in moving heavy equipment in and out of job sites and navigating busy highways with unique loads.

Heavy equipment loaded on a lowboy trailer for New Jersey transport

What Moves on Lowboy and Step Deck Trailers

  • Backhoes, pavers, and track skidders
  • Excavators, dozers, and loaders
  • Skid steers and compact track loaders
  • Cranes, lifts, and aerial booms
  • Combines, tractors, and farm implements
  • Industrial generators and pumps

Why Lowboy and RGN Transport Works for New Jersey

  • Height Compliance

Lowboy decks sit 18 to 24 inches off the ground. Tall machinery clears bridges and overpasses on the Turnpike and I-78.

  • Stability and Capacity

Step deck and lowboy trailers carry the weight of full-size dozers, cranes, and combines without straining the suspension.

  • Permit and Escort Expertise

Carriers in our network handle NJDOT oversize and overweight permits, route surveys, escort vehicles, and restricted travel windows.

New Jersey Port Logistics

The Port of New York and New Jersey is the largest port on the East Coast and third largest in the country. Its New Jersey terminals handle import vehicles, dealer auction imports, and PCS vehicles returning from overseas. We deliver to and pick up from every terminal.

  • Port Newark

Newark, NJ. Container and auto terminals off the Turnpike, next to Newark Liberty.

  • Elizabeth-Port Authority Marine Terminal

Elizabeth, NJ. Home of the port's largest container terminals, beside Port Newark.

  • Port Jersey-Port Authority Marine Terminal

Bayonne, NJ. Container terminal and vehicle handling on the Bayonne side of the harbor.

Equipment that does not fit on a step deck moves on a Removable Gooseneck (RGN) trailer. The front detaches so tracked machinery rolls on without ramps. Best for excavators, dozers, and equipment without functional drive systems.

Need a New Jersey heavy haul quote? Send equipment specs and route. We come back with a price-locked rate.

When Each Option Makes Sense

  • Open auto transport carrier loading vehicles in New Jersey

    Open Transport in New Jersey

Thinking about using open auto transport for your New Jersey car transport needs? Open carriers are the same double-decker car carriers the dealerships use. Your vehicle will be secured with state-of-the-art equipment and arrive at its destination within seven days of departure. Open auto transport is a secure and affordable way of shipping your car, protecting your vehicle from road vibration, excess mileage, and more.

  • Enclosed transport carrier with high-value vehicle in New Jersey

    Enclosed Transport in New Jersey

When you want to ship a vehicle across the state and ill weather is in the forecast, you'll want to work with a New Jersey auto transport company that knows how to protect your auto investment. Whether shipping a luxury sedan to Woodbridge Township or a high-end SUV to Edison, you need it protected regardless of the weather. By sending your vehicle via enclosed auto transport when looking for car transport in New Jersey, you'll avoid damage from drastic freezes, rain, hail, snow, wind-blown debris, and more. Having your car shipped to New Jersey in an enclosed carrier is a wise investment.

New Jersey weather note. Sitting square in the Mid-Atlantic region, New Jersey can get hammered from both directions, with nor'easters sweeping down from New England and hurricanes rolling up the coast from the south. This means high winds, sweeping snows in the winter, and flooding and heavy rains in the spring and summer.

The safest way to transport your car to New Jersey is within an enclosed auto transport. There are two options. Soft-sided enclosed auto transport: the heavy canvas covering the carriers protects your car from wind-blown debris, rain, sleet, snow, and other elements. Hard-sided enclosed auto transport: in addition to the advantages of soft-sided carriers, hard-sided carriers offer protection for your car in the unlikely event your car is exposed to possible damage during transportation.

Not sure which one fits? Tell us the year, make, and model and we will say so straight.

Should You Drive or Ship Your Car to New Jersey?

Driving it looks free until you add it up. These figures come from our Florida to New Jersey route guide, for a 1,280-mile run up I-95 from Florida.

The Hidden Cost of Driving It Yourself

Out-of-pocket cost to drive Florida to New Jersey
ExpenseTypical cost
Fuel$180 to $250
Lodging, 1 to 2 nights$150 to $300
Food and meals$50 to $100
Tolls$40 to $80
Vehicle wear, tires, oil, mileage$120 to $200
Total$540 to $930

That covers 18 to 20 hours behind the wheel, and leaves out the flight back and 1,300 miles on the odometer. Tolls bite harder here, since I-95 north of Virginia and the Turnpike are tolled.

Driving vs. Shipping, Side by Side

Driving yourself compared to shipping your car
FactorDriving yourselfShipping your car
CostFuel, a night or two, meals, tolls, wearOne quote, locked at booking
Vehicle wearAdds 1,150 to 1,350 milesAdds zero miles to the odometer
Time18 to 20 hours behind the wheelFly north in three hours
RiskI-95 traffic, fatigue, summer stormsCovered by the carrier's cargo insurance
EffortRoute planning, a hotel, a long haulPicked up and delivered for you

The bottom line. Driving makes sense if you want the trip. If you make this run twice a year, or you are relocating with a second car, shipping costs about the same once the hotel receipts land, and it gives you the days back.

Moving to New Jersey: What to Do After Your Car Arrives

New Jersey starts two clocks when you arrive, one at 60 days and one at 14. What applies to a car you already own is not what most pages say.

New Jersey gives you 60 days to transfer your out-of-state title, registration, and driver license, or until your current license and registration expire, whichever occurs first. If the plate you drove in on expires in three weeks, your clock is three weeks.

New Jersey Does Not Put Your Car on a Lift

New Jersey has not required a safety inspection since August 1, 2010, and it stopped tailpipe testing on May 1, 2016. What is left is an On-Board Diagnostics scan, every two years, on gasoline cars from model year 1996 on that are at least five model years old. Electric cars are exempt outright.

Registration and inspection are two deadlines, not one. You register first, the MVC hands you a temporary authorization certificate, and the car has 14 days from that date to reach an inspection facility. An inspection done in your old state buys nothing, since no sticker is issued to an out-of-state vehicle. Skipping it carries a $100 to $200 fine. The state publishes no fee for inspection at its own facility, so ask first.

The Sales Tax Test Has Three Parts

The rate is 6.625 percent. A car you already owned is exempt under Sales Tax Exemption #7: purchased, titled, and registered in another state while you were not a New Jersey resident. All three have to be true.

Title transfer is $60, $85 with one lien, $110 with two, on forms OS/SS-UTA and BA-49. Registration runs $46.50 to $84.00 by model year and weight, plates included. There is no VIN verification. Electric cars pay $250 a year on top of registration, rising $10 a year.

Insurance and License

New Jersey raised its minimum liability limits on January 1, 2026. A Standard Policy now carries $35,000 per person, $70,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. A Basic Policy includes no bodily injury liability unless you add the $10,000 option, and property damage is $5,000. New Jersey is a no-fault state, so personal injury protection is required on both, starting at $15,000.

Bring a New Jersey insurance card, not your old state's, since the counter and the inspection lane both ask for it. The license runs on the same 60 days with 6 Points of ID and a New Jersey address. Tests are waived if your old license is current, valid, and not provisional, and the transfer is $10 on form BA-208.

Bring identification, the out-of-state title, a New Jersey insurance card, proof of address, and the completed OS/SS-UTA and BA-49. Then watch the 14-day clock, which starts when the MVC issues the temporary authorization certificate. Fees and forms are on the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission site.

Snowbird Season (October to April)

This is the snowbird lane, and direction matters more than the month. Cars go south in the autumn and north in the spring. A car booked north in the autumn usually beats the same car in April, because the trucks run back light. See our snowbird auto transport page for booking lead times and price locking.

  • Long Branch to Palm Beach
  • Jersey City and Hoboken to Fort Lauderdale and Miami
  • Hackensack and Bergen County to Boca Raton
  • Princeton and Trenton to Naples

New Jersey Weather Factors

  • Nor'easters

Primarily a risk between September and April. Powerful winds, rain or snow, and coastal flooding can shut the Turnpike and hold a delivery a day.

  • Hurricane Season

June 1 to November 30. Storms rolling up the coast bring high winds and flooding to the Shore. Carriers watch every named storm five days out.

  • The I-95 Congestion Belt

Washington, Baltimore, and Philadelphia sit on the way in. Rush hour beats weather as a cause of a late delivery.

Storm Response Plan

  1. Monitor

We track named storms and nor'easters several days out and flag any New Jersey shipment in the path.

  2. Communicate

Your dedicated agent calls 24 to 48 hours before an affected pickup or delivery window.

  3. Hold, Reroute, or Refund

No penalty for weather-driven changes. We reroute, delay, or refund based on your call.

Booking lead time during peak New Jersey windows: 3 to 4 weeks for the April return leg, 2 to 3 weeks for the fall run south and for summer moves. 1 to 2 weeks in May and September.

  • How should I prep my car before shipping it?

It's recommended to wash your car so the transport carrier can do a proper inspection at pickup. Remove any toll tags so you don't incur fees while in transit. It's also best to remove any loose parts to prevent any damage during transport.

Yes, if you are moving here. New Jersey gives you 60 days to transfer the title, registration, and license, or less if your current registration expires first.
