Need a Michigan Car Shipping Service?
Michigan is a pretty interesting state. The home of Motown and American manufacturing is the only state composed entirely of two peninsulas. Bordered by Lake Saint Clair and four of the five Great Lakes (all but Lake Ontario), it has the country's longest freshwater coastline. No matter where you are in Michigan, you are never more than 6 miles from the nearest freshwater lake or stream! Probably one of the main reasons why Michigan is such a big tourist destination and boasts the third-most registered boats of any state in the country. Michigan has plenty of other things going for it as well:
As Motown and garage rock's home, it has brought the country diverse musical acts, ranging from Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles and The Temptations to The Stooges, Alice Cooper, MC5, and more. Visit the Motown Museum, Home of Hitsville, U.S.A., for a guided tour of the history of the music city.
With 116 lighthouses on the Great Lakes' shores, Michigan is home to more lighthouses than any ocean state has.
Michigan is home to several large companies. Many of them are based in manufacturing and range from companies such as Dow and Whirlpool to Kellogg, which is famously headquartered in Battle Creek.
Of course, the most well-known industry in Michigan is the automotive industry. General Motors and Ford continue to be the largest two companies in Michigan. In contrast, support companies and parts manufacturers such as TRW Automotive, Penske Automotive, American Axle, Lear, and BorgWarner are also located there.
Michigan is the third-largest producer of live Christmas trees in the United States, so if you're in the Midwest and want a live tree, you know where to go.
Michigan is also the largest producer of tart cherries, such as the Montmorency cherry, in the nation. Traverse City is home to the annual National Cherry Festival at the center of Michigan's Fruit Belt.
All of this has helped Michigan bounce back from some tough times and helped the state continue to be cited as a great place for growth and opportunity heading into the future.

How to Ship a Car to Michigan?
The best way to answer the question of "How to ship my car to Michigan" is to show you how we operate our auto shipping business. We know car owners won't trust just any car shipping company to move their vehicle across states. They want experience and reputation. Here's how we do it:
- First, once your order is placed, we'll start the process of moving a car to Michigan. This usually happens within a week. We'll continue updating you on important information, including the time and date of pickup, tracking number, and the truck driver's number.
- Then, the truck driver will call you to finalize delivery plans. The drivers in our carrier network strive to take care of all vehicles carried as if they are their own. Protecting your car against any damage from delivery is their ultimate concern. You'll also sign and receive a Bill of Lading before the driver leaves.
- Finally, once the vehicle arrives in Michigan, both you and the driver will inspect the vehicle for any damage. This is also the time when you will sign the final inspection report. It's that simple!
Michigan Auto Transport Routes, Transit Times, and Pricing
Depending on the car's location, most pickup windows are 24 to 72 hours from when the vehicle is ready to be picked up. This window could take up to 5 days in remote areas. Lowboy or Step Deck Carriers in Michigan
With some of the distances and weather headaches you may get in Michigan throughout the year, construction work has to go by the seasons' schedule. Even then, it can be hard to count on positive weather, and some distances can consume too much valuable time for construction crews. Crews often need a hand moving their dozers, graders, and material handlers from one site to the next without losing staff hours. They rely on Michigan equipment transport experts to stay on schedule and safely get to the next site.
Transporting heavy construction equipment is a serious business. The veteran lowboy carrier drivers in our network are trained to handle oversized loads and high gross tonnage. They are skilled in moving heavy equipment in and out of job sites and navigating busy highways with unique loads.
What Moves on Lowboy and Step Deck Trailers
- Dozers, graders, and material handlers
- Excavators, backhoes, and wheel loaders
- Cranes, lifts, and aerial booms
- Skid steers and compact track loaders
- Combines, tractors, and farm implements
- Industrial generators and pumps
Why Lowboy and RGN Transport Works for Michigan
Height Compliance
Lowboy decks sit 18 to 24 inches off the ground. Tall machinery clears bridges and overpasses on I-75, I-94, and I-96.
Stability and Capacity
Step deck and lowboy trailers carry the weight of full-size dozers, cranes, and combines without straining the suspension.
Permit and Escort Expertise
Carriers in our network handle MDOT oversize and overweight permits, route surveys, escort vehicles, and the spring weight limits on state roads.
Equipment that does not fit on a step deck moves on a Removable Gooseneck (RGN) trailer. The front detaches so tracked machinery rolls on without ramps. Best for excavators, dozers, and equipment without functional drive systems.
Need a Michigan heavy haul quote? Send equipment specs and route. We come back with a price-locked rate.
Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport in Michigan
Most Michigan customers ship on open auto transport. About 85 percent of US shipments move this way. Enclosed auto transport is the right pick for classics, exotics, and any vehicle valued at $75,000 or more.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | Open | Enclosed |
|---|---|---|
| Share of US shipments | About 85% | About 15% |
| Vehicles per load | 8 to 10 | 2 to 6 |
| Cost vs. base | Standard | 40 to 60% above open |
| Protection | Tied down, weather exposed | Fully enclosed |
| Carrier availability | Wide, faster pickup | Tighter, books up fast |
| Booking lead time | 1 to 2 weeks | 2 to 3 weeks |
| Best fit | Daily drivers | Classics, exotics, $75K+ |

Open auto transport is a secure and affordable way of shipping your car, protecting your vehicle from road vibration, excess mileage, and more. It's an ideal choice for those who seek a balance between safety and budget considerations.

Enclosed Transport in Michigan
So when you're looking to ship a vehicle from Troy to Marquette or Sault Ste. Marie, you'll want to work with a Michigan auto transport company that protects your major investment, whether a luxury sedan or a high-end SUV, regardless of the weather. By sending your vehicle via enclosed auto transport, you'll avoid damage from rain, hail, snow, freezing temperatures, and more.
Michigan weather note. With a northern location and being surrounded by water, Michigan can get positively hammered by winter storms. From biting winds blowing in from Lake Michigan itself to snow picking up as it comes down across Lake Superior from Canada and hits the U.P., there's a lot that Michigan residents have to deal with. While mainland Michigan often catches up to 40 to 50 inches of lake-effect snow per year, the reaches of the Upper Peninsula can see up to 160 inches over some winters.
The safest way to transport your car to Michigan is within an enclosed auto transport. There are two options for shipping your car via enclosed auto transport. Soft-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: The heavy canvas covering the carriers protects your car from wind-blown debris, rain, sleet, snow, and other elements. Hard-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: In addition to the advantages of soft-sided carriers, hard-sided carriers offer protection for your car in the unlikely event your car is exposed to possible damage during transportation.
Not sure which one fits? Tell us the year, make, and model and we will say so straight.
Should You Drive or Ship Your Car to Michigan?
Driving it yourself looks cheap on a 600-mile trip, and sometimes it is. These figures come from our New York to Michigan route guide, for a one-way run of 400 to 700 miles into the Lower Peninsula.
The Hidden Cost of Driving It Yourself
| Expense | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Fuel | $50 to $85 |
| Meals | $40 to $80 |
| Lodging, 0 to 1 night | $0 to $150 |
| Tolls | $20 to $50 |
| Total out of pocket | $110 to $365 |
Typical figures for a sedan, with one night out on Lansing, Flint, and Grand Rapids runs. Tolls are the Hudson crossing and the Ohio Turnpike. Left out: the flight back, the miles, and a day of your time.
Driving vs. Shipping, Side by Side
| Factor | Driving yourself | Shipping your car |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Fuel, meals, tolls, a hotel, a flight home | One quote, locked at booking |
| Vehicle wear | Adds 400 to 700 miles | Adds zero miles |
| Time | A day driving, then the trip back | A short flight, or none |
| Risk | I-80 truck traffic, lake-effect snow, fatigue | Covered by the carrier's cargo insurance |
| Effort | Planning, a hotel, a one-way haul | Picked up and delivered for you |
The bottom line. Driving makes sense if the day is free and you have a ride back. Starting a job in Warren or dropping a student at Ann Arbor? The gap shrinks to a plane ticket, and shipping gives you the day back.

Moving to Michigan: What to Do After Your Car Arrives
Most people shipping into Michigan are starting a job or a school year. Two things catch newcomers off guard: Michigan gives no grace period, and the branch will not register a car on an out-of-state policy. Here is what actually applies.
New Michigan residents must title and register their vehicles immediately. The Secretary of State says there is no grace period in Michigan law. Apply for your Michigan driver's license as soon as you establish residency too.
Get a Michigan No-Fault Policy First
State law requires proof of a valid Michigan No-Fault auto insurance policy to register a vehicle, and the Secretary of State says an out-of-state policy can't be used. Switch to a Michigan no-fault policy at your Michigan address before the branch visit.
The minimum liability limits are $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $10,000 for property damage in another state. Unless you choose lower limits, the default is $250,000 and $500,000. You also pick a PIP medical level, with unlimited coverage as the first option. The policy pays up to $1 million for damage your car does to other people's property in Michigan.
No Tax Line on the Checklist
Michigan's use tax is 6 percent, but the Secretary of State's new-resident checklist lists no tax. Treasury exempts property a nonresident brings into Michigan more than 90 days after buying it, and it credits sales or use tax paid to another state. A car you owned for more than 90 days before the move fits that case. Bought it in the last 90 days? Check with Treasury first.
No Inspection, Emissions, or VIN Line on the Checklist
The Secretary of State's checklist for an out-of-state title has no safety inspection line, no emissions line, and no VIN line. The branch wants your out-of-state title, proof of Michigan no-fault insurance, and proof of identity. If a bank or leasing company holds the title, bring its written statement too.
Your Michigan License
The license runs on the same clock. Michigan law sets no grace period, so apply for a Michigan driver's license or ID as soon as you establish residency. Book it into the same branch visit as the title and plate.
Bring your out-of-state title, proof of Michigan no-fault insurance, and proof of identity. Title transfer is $15. Plate fees for 1984 and newer cars are a percentage of the original MSRP, so a newer car pays more. Check current fees with the Michigan Secretary of State before you go.

Snowbird, Student, and PCS Windows
Michigan is on our Florida snowbird list. Cars head south in October and November, and carriers follow them onto Florida routes. They come back north in the spring. Late August fills with student move-in at Ann Arbor and East Lansing, and PCS orders run May through August. See our snowbird auto transport page for booking lead times and price locking.
Winter Sets the Pace
From late fall into spring, lake-effect snow and wind on the Straits of Mackinac decide how fast trucks move. December to February is still the cheapest window. Build a day of slack into a winter pickup and take the lower rate.
| Window | Demand | What drives it | Booking lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| October to November | Peak | Snowbird traffic pulls carriers onto Florida routes | 3 to 4 weeks |
| December to February | Quiet | The cheapest window. Lake-effect snow can push a pickup by a day | 1 to 2 weeks |
| March to May | Building to peak | Spring relocations in March, then lease turnovers and the first PCS orders | 2 weeks in March, 3 to 4 by April |
| June to August | Steady | Summer relocations at base pricing. Late August fills with student move-in | 2 weeks, 3 to 4 for late August |
| September | Building | Fall relocations start and snowbird season is a month out | 2 weeks |
Our Michigan page has never published a seasonal percentage. These windows and lead times come from our New York to Michigan route guide, which publishes them without one, so no premium is printed here. Michigan is on the snowbird route list of our Florida auto transport page.

Michigan Weather Factors
Lake-Effect Snow
Common across the Great Lakes in late fall and winter. It falls in narrow bands, and sunny skies can turn to blinding, wind-driven snow in minutes. Bands off Lake Michigan hit Grand Rapids and Muskegon, and a heavy one can cost a day.
Mackinac Bridge Wind
In sustained winds of 35 to 50 mph, high-profile vehicles wait for an escort across the bridge. From 50 to 65 mph it closes to them, so a loaded car carrier waits. Upper Peninsula deliveries can add a day.
I-75 North of Bay City
Past Bay City, I-75 runs open country to the bridge, and a winter storm can shut it for hours. Carriers wait it out in Saginaw.
Spring Weight Limits
As frozen roads thaw, MDOT cuts legal axle weights on seasonal state routes by 25 percent on concrete and 35 percent on asphalt. In 2026 the limits ran from February 17 to May 15. Heavy equipment moves plan around them.
Winter Storm Response Plan
Monitor
We track lake-effect bands, winter storms, and Mackinac Bridge wind holds several days out and flag any Michigan shipment in the path.
Communicate
Your dedicated agent calls 24 to 48 hours before the affected pickup or delivery window.
Hold, Reroute, or Refund
No penalty for weather-driven changes. We reroute, delay, or refund based on your call.
Booking lead time during peak Michigan windows: 3 to 4 weeks for October to November, from April into May, and for late August move-in. 2 weeks in March, from June to early August, and in September. 1 to 2 weeks from December to February.

Yes, carriers in our network are equipped with a winch to help pull the vehicle onto the trailer. Please let your dedicated shipping agent know if the car breaks, rolls, and steers.
Can I pack my car when transporting it to or from Michigan?
While some personal belongings can be transported inside your vehicle for your convenience, there are restrictions. The total weight must be under 100 pounds, and for security reasons, they should be stored in the trunk or back seat, remaining below the window line. It's important to note that any personal belongings shipped within the car are not covered by the standard transport insurance in case of damage or loss.
Does my vehicle need to have plates when shipping it to or from Michigan?
No, but sometimes a carrier will have to meet in a parking lot due to the size of his truck and the destination street layout. If so, you will most likely have to drive the car a few blocks.
How should I prep my car before shipping it?
It's recommended to wash your car so the transport carrier can do a proper inspection at pickup. Remove any toll tags so you don't incur fees while in transit. It's also best to remove any loose parts to prevent any damage during transport.
What is the cheapest way to transport a car to or from Michigan?
The cheapest way to ship a car to or from Michigan is on an open car trailer.
Should I drive or ship my car to Michigan?
If the trip is a short distance, you should consider driving it to save money. Shipping is ideal for long distances, valuable cars, or if you don't want the hassle of driving yourself.
Is my vehicle insured when using a Michigan car shipping service?
Yes, all the carriers in our network are vetted and screened with the DOT and FMCSA to make sure they have up to date and adequate cargo coverage to fully protect your car during transport.
How do I get a quote for shipping my car to Michigan?
Most car shipping carriers request a 3-day (weekday) window for pickup. Once you have your desired pickup window, provide us with the year, make, model, and we will be able to provide you with a Michigan car shipping rate.
How do I pay for my Michigan auto transport service?
Number 1 Auto Transport offers a variety of convenient payment methods to ensure a smooth transaction for our customers. We accept all major credit cards for your convenience. Additionally, we facilitate secure electronic transfers through established platforms (Zelle, Venmo, Cashapp, Paypal) as well as ACH and wire transfers. For alternative payment preferences, certified and bank checks are also accepted.
What documents do I need to provide to ship my car?
You do not need to provide any documents to ship your car. However, it is recommended to sign a Bill of Lading before the carrier leaves.
What happens upon pick-up and delivery of my car?
The transport carrier will conduct a thorough inspection with you at the predetermined pickup location, noting any existing dents or scratches. The same inspection will be done upon delivery.
How far in advance do I need to schedule my Michigan car shipping service?
To ensure we can fulfill your preferred delivery timeframe, scheduling your car shipment with ample lead time is highly recommended. Ideally, booking your transport at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance allows for optimal planning and execution.
Do I have to register my car in Michigan after it arrives?
Yes, if you are moving here, and right away. The Secretary of State says new residents must title and register their vehicles immediately, with no grace period in Michigan law. You need a Michigan no-fault policy first, because an out-of-state policy can't be used to register. The checklist for an out-of-state title has no inspection, emissions, or VIN line, and title transfer is $15.
