Moving to Washington D.C.? Ship Your Car with Number 1 Auto Transport
Washington D.C. and the D.C. metropolitan area is a unique region. A city not in any state, with its own vibe and atmosphere, it's a variety of neighborhoods and surrounding suburbs. These suburbs might be in Virginia or Maryland, places like Alexandria or Silver Spring, or inside the district like Tenleytown, Logan Circle, or Columbia Heights. Inside D.C., there are almost 700,000 residents, spread out over only 68 square miles, one of the most population-dense areas in the United States!
Washington D.C. is unique as it is a federal district and doesn't qualify as a state. If it were, it would have a greater population than Vermont and Wyoming. It would be the smallest state, almost 1,000 square miles smaller than Rhode Island, and would be the most population-dense state. New Jersey currently has 1,263 citizens per square mile, but D.C. would have 10 times that with 11,295 citizens per square mile!
Home to approximately 180 resident embassies, D.C. has one of the largest embassy populations of any city across the globe!
The region is full of federal and federally-tied companies, making D.C. and its suburbs one of the strongest economies in the United States. The federal government is far and away the biggest employer in the region: 9 of the top 10 employers are departments of the U.S. government, including the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Navy.
There are a number of Fortune 500 companies that call Washington D.C. home and are among the highest employers in the region.
D.C. is also home to global and non-profit organizations, including the International Monetary Fund, the American Red Cross, Human Rights Watch, the National Geographic Society, and many more!
While the Smithsonian Institution and the museums that it sponsors are perhaps the most well-known and visible museums in Washington D.C. (and perhaps in America, period), D.C. is home to over 80 museums and historic places covering everything from espionage (the International Spy Museum) to language (Planet Word) to deaf culture and history (National Deaf Life Museum at Gallaudet University).
Including Gallaudet (the only higher education institution in which all programs and services are designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students), Washington D.C. is home to 19 universities, including American University and Georgetown University.
In terms of square miles, Washington, D.C., is the smallest city to have all four major sports teams represented. The Washington Commanders, Washington Nationals, Washington Wizards, and Washington Capitals all call D.C. home!
It's no wonder Washington, D.C. is one of the most desirable metropolitan areas to live in across the country! Everything it offers, from careers to the opportunity for rural or urban living, to education and the outdoors, makes it a welcoming place for all.

Lowboy Carriers to Washington D.C.
Since 2003, there has been over $3 billion in capital investment in the region, from expanding federal facilities to international projects. With so many projects, there is high demand for agile construction companies. This means constantly moving equipment and having the know-how to deal with different industrial units, all while navigating the tight D.C. infrastructure. When builders need to have a loader or crane moved, or when site prep crews need to get an excavator or grader to the job site, they want to call the team with experience. They don't want to tie up their valuable skilled laborers. That's why construction teams across the district rely on Washington D.C. equipment transport and lowboy shipping experts at Number 1 Auto Transport to ensure they stay on schedule and everything gets to the job site safely.
Transporting heavy construction equipment is a serious business. The veteran lowboy carrier drivers in our network are trained to handle oversized loads and high gross tonnage. The drivers in our carrier network are skilled in moving heavy equipment in and out of job sites and navigating busy highways with unique loads.
What Moves on Lowboy and Step Deck Trailers
- Cranes and loaders
- Excavators and graders
- Road rollers and paving equipment
- Dump trucks and work trucks
- Skid steers and compact track loaders
- Lifts, aerial booms, and generators
Why Lowboy and RGN Transport Works for Washington DC
Height Compliance
Lowboy decks sit 18 to 24 inches off the ground. That helps tall machinery stay under DC's 13 foot 6 inch height limit on I-395, I-295, and I-695.
Stability and Capacity
Step deck and lowboy trailers carry the weight of full-size cranes, loaders, and excavators without straining the suspension.
Permit and Escort Expertise
Carriers in our network get DDOT oversize and overweight permits through its TOPS system, with a single haul permit for each trip past DC's size or weight limits. DDOT recommends private escort vehicles for loads 12 feet wide, 75 feet long, or 120,000 pounds and up.
Equipment that does not fit on a step deck moves on a Removable Gooseneck (RGN) trailer. The front detaches so tracked machinery rolls on without ramps. Best for excavators, dozers, and equipment without functional drive systems.
Need a Washington DC heavy haul quote? Send equipment specs and route. We come back with a price-locked rate.

Enclosed Transport in Washington DC
Enclosed Auto Transport to Washington D.C. The safest way to transport your car to Washington DC is within an enclosed auto transport. There are two options for shipping your car via enclosed auto transport. Soft-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: The heavy canvas covering the carriers protects your car from wind-blown debris, rain, sleet, snow, and other elements. Hard-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: In addition to the advantages of soft-sided carriers, hard-sided carriers offer protection for your car in the unlikely event your car is exposed to possible damage during transportation.
Washington DC weather note. Washington DC has fairly cold, sometimes snowy winters and warm, humid summers. NOAA lists tropical storms, severe thunderstorms, blizzards, ice storms, flooding, and heat waves among the weather that hits the District, and the National Weather Service notes that the line between rain and snow often falls right over the city. This diverse weather is one of the main reasons Washingtonians still prefer sending their vehicle to or through Washington DC partnered with a company that prepares for and avoids weather events. When you opt to send your vehicle via enclosed auto transport when looking for car transport in Washington DC, you'll avoid damage from rain, wind-blown debris in storms, and other curveballs the weather throws out there. Having your car shipped to Washington DC in an enclosed carrier is a wise investment for your investment.
Not sure which one fits? Tell us the year, make, and model and we will say so straight.
Should You Drive or Ship Your Car to or from Washington DC?
No route guide covers a Washington DC lane yet, so we do not publish a driving cost for one. Here is how the two options compare on everything except the price.
Driving vs. Shipping, Side by Side
| Factor | Driving yourself | Shipping your car |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Fuel, lodging, meals, tolls, and wear, paid as you go | One quote, locked at booking |
| Miles on the odometer | Every mile of the trip, plus any detours | Zero miles added |
| Days | Your own days behind the wheel, then a trip back | 2 to 3 days under 1,000 miles and 7 to 10 days from 1,750 to 2,500 miles, none of it yours |
| Risk | Snowstorms and snow emergencies, summer thunderstorms and flash floods, tropical storm remnants, heavy traffic, and fatigue | Covered by the carrier's cargo insurance |
| Effort | Route planning, hotels, storm and traffic reports, and a flight home | Picked up and delivered for you |
The transit windows are the ones this page has always published. Your quote supplies the shipping price, so the table leaves dollar figures out.
The bottom line. Driving makes sense on a short run, the way our FAQ below says. For a long haul, a winter move, or a car you want kept off the road, shipping gives you the days back and keeps the miles off the car.

Moving to Washington DC: What to Do After Your Car Arrives
Most people shipping into Washington DC are relocating for work, school, or orders at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling or another DC post. DC gives you 60 days to register, and your car must pass a DC inspection first. Here is what actually applies.
DC law gives new residents 60 calendar days from the day they start living in the District to register their cars with DC DMV. First you convert your out-of-state license to a DC license or ID card. Then your car passes inspection at the DC DMV Inspection Station at 1001 Half Street SW, and you title and register it with printed proof of DC insurance. A car you registered or titled in another state before you moved here owes no DC excise tax.
Excise Tax, Title, and Registration Fees
DC charges an excise tax when it issues a title. A car you registered or titled in another state before you moved to DC is exempt. If the title is not already in your name, the transfer counts as a change of ownership and the tax applies. Since February 17, 2025, the rate depends on the car's weight and city miles per gallon, and it is applied to the car's fair market value. Electric cars are no longer exempt.
A DC title costs $30, plus $20 for each lien. Registration is by weight. Since March 30, 2026, a passenger car is $70 a year up to 3,499 pounds, $175 up to 4,999 pounds, $300 up to 5,999 pounds, and $550 or more at 6,000 pounds and up. If a lender holds your title, ask the lender to send it to DC DMV, because DC DMV must have the title before it can register the car.
DC Inspection Before You Register
Every car registered in DC must have a valid DC inspection sticker, and DC does not accept inspection stickers from other states. The first inspection is at the DC DMV Inspection Station at 1001 Half Street SW. No appointment is needed, and you can drive there on your current out-of-state tags. You pay the inspection fee when you register, not at the station. See DC DMV's vehicle inspections page before you go.
The inspection is an emissions check. Cars from 1996 and newer get an OBD scan, and older cars get a tailpipe test, along with a visual catalyst check and a gas cap test. A personal car's inspection lasts 2 years and costs $35. Diesel and fully electric passenger cars skip the emissions test but still need a sticker, so take an electric car coming from another state to the Inspection Station for its sticker that does not expire.
Insurance, License, and Parking
DC requires liability coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for injuries, and $10,000 for property damage. You also need uninsured motorist coverage of $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident, and $5,000 for property damage. Bring printed proof of DC insurance to register. A 2026 law raises the liability and uninsured motorist minimums to $50,000, $100,000, and $20,000 starting October 1, 2027.
If you live in DC for more than 60 days, you must convert your out-of-state license to a DC REAL ID license. Bring proof of identity, proof of your Social Security number, and two proofs of DC residency, and turn in your old license. A DC license costs $47 and lasts 8 years. If your old license expired more than 90 days ago, you take the knowledge and road tests.
To park longer than two hours on a block zoned for residential parking, your car needs a Residential Parking Permit for your zone. DC DMV adds it when you register, and since March 30, 2026 it costs $55 a year for the first car in your household.
Take your out-of-state title, your DC license, your inspection report, and printed proof of DC insurance to a DC DMV service center. Active duty service members, full-time students, and some other groups can keep their home state tags with a DC reciprocity permit instead. A car parked or driven on DC streets for 60 days in a row must carry DC tags and a DC inspection sticker, or it can be ticketed or towed. Check current rules with DC DMV before you go.
Washington DC Seasonal Shipping Guide

PCS Season Matters Most in DC
With this many military posts in and around the District, PCS season matters most here. Our Texas page puts it at May to August, when carrier supply tightens, prices rise, and pickup dates fill weeks ahead. Book 3 to 4 weeks out once orders are in hand for a move to or from Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, the Washington Navy Yard, Fort McNair, or a post just outside the District.
Snowbird Runs and Storm Season
Our Florida page puts snowbird season at October to April. Cars head south from October through December and come back north in March and April. Our Texas page shows the same pattern. Our Arizona page has winter residents arriving in October and November and heading home in April and May, and our Nevada page has October and November pulling carriers toward Las Vegas, with snowbirds starting home in March. All four lanes are on this page's tables, so book early in those months. In winter, a snowstorm or a snow emergency can hold a truck for a day, and summer thunderstorms and flash floods can do the same, so build a day of slack into a pickup in those months. See our snowbird auto transport page for booking lead times and price locking.
| Window | Demand | What drives it | Booking lead time |

Washington DC has no route guide, and this page publishes no seasonal figure beyond the 2 to 3 week booking advice in its FAQ. The snowbird windows and lead times come from our Florida auto transport page (October to April, 2 to 4 weeks), our Texas auto transport page (south from October to December, north in March and April), our Arizona auto transport page (in during October and November, home in April and May), and our Nevada auto transport page (October and November toward Las Vegas, home starting in March), whose lanes into DC appear on this page's tables. None of the four names DC on its snowbird list. The PCS window and its lead time also come from the Texas page. We publish no seasonal premium for DC, so your quote carries the real number.

Washington DC Weather Factors
Snowstorms and Snow Emergencies
The National Weather Service says nor'easters bring the city its biggest snows, and the rain and snow line often falls right over the District. The January 22 to 23, 2016 blizzard left 22.4 inches at the National Zoo. During a DC snow emergency, cars may not park on snow emergency routes and can be towed, so a street delivery may wait or move to a nearby lot.
Summer Heat and Thunderstorms
NOAA describes DC summers as warm and humid. From 2015 to 2020, DC averaged more than 18 nights a year that stayed at 75 degrees or warmer, up from 3.7 a year from 1950 to 2009. The June 29, 2012 derecho left one quarter of DC residents without power, some for more than a week.
Flash Flooding
NOAA says dense urban areas are highly vulnerable to flash flooding. On September 10, 2020, slow storms dropped 2 to 5 inches of rain in about 2 hours and flooded roads across the District. In June 2006, Reagan National logged 9.41 inches in two days, its most on record for that span.
Tropical Storm Remnants
Agnes came ashore in the Florida Panhandle in June 1972, then dropped more than 7 inches of rain in DC, and Rock Creek reached its highest recorded stage. In September 2003, Isabel pushed a storm surge 6 to 8 feet above normal up the Potomac, and the surge flooded parts of Washington DC.

Booking lead time during peak DC windows: 3 to 4 weeks from May to August on PCS orders. 2 to 4 weeks for the snowbird runs from October to December and from March to May. 2 to 3 weeks the rest of the year, as our FAQ advises.

How far in advance do I need to schedule my Washington D.C. car shipping service?
To ensure we can fulfill your preferred delivery timeframe, scheduling your car shipment with ample lead time is highly recommended. Ideally, booking your transport at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance allows for optimal planning and execution.
Do I have to register my car in Washington DC after it arrives?
Yes, if you are moving here. DC gives you 60 calendar days from the day you start living in the District to register your car with DC DMV, after you convert to a DC driver license. Your car must pass inspection at the DC DMV Inspection Station first, and DC does not accept other states' inspection stickers. A car you registered or titled in another state before you moved here owes no DC excise tax. You need DC insurance with at least $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident, and $10,000 for property damage. Active duty service members can keep their home state tags with a DC reciprocity permit.
