How to Ship a Car to Mississippi?

The best way to answer the question of "How to ship my car to Mississippi" is to show you how we operate our auto shipping business. We know car owners won't trust just any car shipping company to move their vehicle across states. They want experience and reputation. Here's how we do it:

  • First, once your order is placed, we'll start the process of moving a car to Mississippi. This usually happens within a week. We'll continue updating you on important information, including the time and date of pickup, tracking number, and the truck driver's number.
  • Then, the truck driver will call you to finalize delivery plans. The drivers in our carrier network strive to take care of all vehicles carried as if they are their own. Protecting your car against any damage from delivery is their ultimate concern. You'll also sign and receive a Bill of Lading before the driver leaves.
  • Finally, once the vehicle arrives in Mississippi, you and the driver will inspect the vehicle for any damage. This is also the time when you will sign the final inspection report. It's that simple!

Every shipment is insured. You can have peace of mind knowing that in the unlikely event your car suffers damage during transport to Mississippi, we have you covered. The carrier's cargo insurance, which we verify before dispatch, will get the claim handled quickly and efficiently.

What Moves on Lowboy and Step Deck Trailers

  • Excavators, dozers, and loaders
  • Skid steers, backhoes, and compact track loaders
  • Cranes, lifts, and aerial booms
  • Dump trucks and work trucks
  • Combines, tractors, and farm implements
  • Industrial generators and pumps

Why Lowboy and RGN Transport Works for Mississippi

  • Height Compliance

Lowboy decks sit 18 to 24 inches off the ground. Tall machinery clears bridges and overpasses on I-55, I-20, I-10, and I-59.

  • Stability and Capacity

Step deck and lowboy trailers carry the weight of full-size dozers, cranes, and combines without straining the suspension.

  • Permit and Escort Expertise

Carriers in our network handle MDOT oversize and overweight permits, escorts for loads 13 feet wide and up, and the noon cutoff before major holidays.

Equipment that does not fit on a step deck moves on a Removable Gooseneck (RGN) trailer. The front detaches so tracked machinery rolls on without ramps. Best for excavators, dozers, and equipment without functional drive systems.

Moving to Mississippi: What to Do After Your Car Arrives

Most people shipping into Mississippi are relocating or reporting to Keesler, Columbus, or NAS Meridian. Mississippi gives you 30 days for the tag and 60 days for the license. Here is what actually applies.

New residents have 30 days after moving to Mississippi to register their cars at the county tax collector's office. Bring the title from your old state and your current out-of-state registration. Miss the 30 days and you owe late penalties plus a $250 penalty. Mississippi has no emissions test, and the new-resident steps list no inspection.

Ad Valorem Tax, Paid Each Year With Your Tag

At the county tax collector you pay a privilege tax, the $14 first-time registration fee, and the motor vehicle ad valorem tax. That tax uses 30 percent of the car's original sticker price, less depreciation over 10 years, times your county's millage rate. You pay it every year when the tag renews.

The Department of Revenue adds sales or use tax only if it applies. Its new-resident pages do not say how that works for a car you already own, so ask your county tax collector. Keep your old tag current until you register. New residents whose out-of-state plate has expired do not qualify for the Legislative Tag Credit, which lowers the ad valorem tax. Military members and their dependents who claim another state as home do not have to register here.

No Emissions Test, No Inspection Sticker

Mississippi does not require emissions testing to register a car. The Legislature repealed inspection stickers in 2015, and the Department of Revenue's new-resident steps list no safety or VIN inspection. A title branded salvage is the exception. Those cars must pass an inspection by the Highway Patrol's Salvage Inspection Division.

If a lender or your old state holds the title, bring your current out-of-state registration receipt as proof of ownership. The Department of Revenue holds your title application and works with the lender or the other state to get the title surrendered.

Insurance and License

Mississippi requires liability coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage. These limits took effect January 1, 2006. Keep an insurance card in the car at all times, and a phone image counts. The first penalty for no card is $1,000 and a suspension of driving privileges for one year or until you show proof of insurance.

Get your Mississippi driver license within 60 days of moving here. A valid license from another state skips the written exam, but you still pass a vision screening. Bring a certified birth certificate, your Social Security card, and two proofs of residency. A four-year license costs $24, and an eight-year license costs $47. The Department of Revenue's tag steps also list a Mississippi license, so it helps to get it first.

Take the out-of-state title, your current out-of-state registration, and your Mississippi driver license to the tax collector in the county where the car is parked overnight. The Department of Revenue lists a $9 title fee and a $14 first-time registration fee. Electric and hybrid vehicles also pay a fee at registration that changes every July 1. Check current fees with the Mississippi Department of Revenue before you go.

Mississippi Seasonal Shipping Guide

Mississippi's busy months follow PCS orders at Keesler, Columbus, and NAS Meridian and the Florida and Texas snowbird runs. Hurricane season runs June to November on the coast, and spring brings tornadoes. Here is what to expect month by month.

Snowbird Runs and PCS Orders

Our Florida auto transport page puts snowbird season at October to April. Cars head south from October through December and come back north in March and April. Our Texas page shows the same pattern, and both lanes are on this page's tables. Our Arizona page has winter residents arriving in October and November and heading home in April and May. PCS season runs May to August, the window on our Texas page. See our snowbird auto transport page for booking lead times and price locking.

Storm Season on the Coast

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10. When New Orleans evacuates, Mississippi can run I-55 and I-59 northbound in every lane, and MDOT may close ramps around Hattiesburg. Coast pickups wait until normal traffic returns, so book early and leave a day or two of slack.

Mississippi has no route guide, and this page publishes no seasonal figure beyond the 2 to 3 week booking advice in its FAQ. The snowbird windows and lead times come from our Florida auto transport page (October to April, 2 to 4 weeks, and September as a low-rate month) and our Texas auto transport page (south from October to December, north in March and April), whose lanes appear on this page's tables. Neither page names Mississippi on its snowbird list. The PCS window and the 3 to 4 week lead time for PCS and hurricane season also come from the Texas page, and our Arizona auto transport page has its winter residents arriving in October and November. We publish no seasonal premium for Mississippi, so your quote carries the real number.

Popular Seasonal Routes To and From Mississippi

  • Texas to and from Mississippi
  • Mississippi to Arizona

Mississippi Weather Factors

  • Hurricane Season on the Coast

June 1 to November 30, with the peak on September 10 and most storms from mid-August to mid-October. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina's surge reached 27.8 feet at Pass Christian and crossed I-10 in many places. Several major bridges in Mississippi were destroyed.

  • Contraflow on I-55 and I-59

When Louisiana asks and Mississippi's governor approves, MDOT runs I-59 and I-55 northbound in all lanes. Contraflow on I-59 ends just south of Hattiesburg, and on I-55 just south of Brookhaven. Coast pickups and deliveries wait until normal traffic returns.

  • Spring Tornadoes, Day or Night

Tornado season in Mississippi peaks from March through May. Strong tornadoes strike about as often at night as by day. On March 24, 2023, the Rolling Fork EF-4 took 17 lives. A warning on the route holds a truck until the storm passes.

  • Ice in North Mississippi

The January 23 to 25, 2026 storm left up to an inch of freezing rain at Oxford and in Alcorn County. Guard crews went out to clear debris and open roads in four northern counties. A winter pickup in the north can slip a day or more.

Storm Response Plan

  1. Monitor

We track Gulf storms, contraflow orders, tornado watches, and ice warnings several days out and flag any Mississippi shipment in the path.

  2. Communicate

Your dedicated agent calls 24 to 48 hours before the affected pickup or delivery window.

  3. Hold, Reroute, or Refund

No penalty for weather-driven changes. We reroute, delay, or refund based on your call.

Booking lead time during peak Mississippi windows: 3 to 4 weeks for PCS season and hurricane season. 2 to 4 weeks for the snowbird runs from October to December and in March and April. 2 to 3 weeks the rest of the year, as our FAQ advises.

  • Can I pack my car when transporting it to or from Mississippi?

While some personal belongings can be transported inside your vehicle for your convenience, there are restrictions. The total weight must be under 100 pounds, and for security reasons, they should be stored in the trunk or back seat, remaining below the window line. It's important to note that any personal belongings shipped within the car are not covered by the standard transport insurance in case of damage or loss.

  • Does my vehicle need to have plates when shipping it to or from Mississippi?

No, but sometimes a carrier will have to meet in a parking lot due to the size of his truck and the destination street layout. If so, you will most likely have to drive the car a few blocks.

  • How should I prep my car before shipping it?

It's recommended to wash your car so the transport carrier can do a proper inspection at pickup. Remove any toll tags so you don't incur fees while in transit. It's also best to remove any loose parts to prevent any damage during transport.

The transport carrier will conduct a thorough inspection with you at the predetermined pickup location, noting any existing dents or scratches. The same inspection will be done upon delivery.

  • How far in advance do I need to schedule my Mississippi car shipping service?

To ensure we can fulfill your preferred delivery timeframe, scheduling your car shipment with ample lead time is highly recommended. Ideally, booking your transport at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance allows for optimal planning and execution.

Yes, if you are moving here. You have 30 days after moving to register at your county tax collector's office, as long as your old registration is current. Miss it and you owe late penalties plus $250. You pay the ad valorem tax when you register and each year after.
