Delaware stands as the corporate haven of America. Over half of U.S. publicly traded entities and a whopping 63% of Fortune 500 giants choose Delaware for incorporation, thanks to its unparalleled business-friendly laws.

In a fascinating twist, corporations outnumber residents! 2018 saw the state hosting over a million corporations, while its population hovered just below that at 967,000.

Affluence is no stranger here. Ranking 9th in millionaires per capita, Delaware boasts a millionaire in every 15 residents.

The state's title as the Chemical Capital isn't just for show. Industry leaders like DuPont have their roots in Wilmington, while giants like AstraZeneca and Agilent Technologies mark significant footprints.

Coastal gems like Dewey and Lewes are perfect retreats. And for a dash of history, Dover's First State Heritage Park showcases the state's rich colonial legacy.

How to Ship a Car to Delaware?

The best way to answer the question of "How to ship my car to Delaware" is to show you how we operate our auto shipping business. We understand that car owners in Delaware won't trust just any car shipping company to move their vehicle across states. They value experience and reputation. Here's how we do it:

  • First, once your order is placed, we'll initiate the process of moving a car to Delaware. This typically occurs within a week. We'll keep you informed with important details, such as the time and date of pickup, tracking number, and the truck driver's contact information.
  • Next, the truck driver will contact you to confirm delivery plans. The drivers in our carrier network are committed to treating all vehicles as if they were their own, prioritizing the protection of your car against any damage during delivery. Before the driver departs, you'll sign and receive a Bill of Lading.
  • Finally, upon the vehicle's arrival in Delaware, both you and the driver will inspect it for any damage. This is also the time when you will sign the final inspection report. It's that simple!

Considering a Lowboy or Step Deck Carrier for Your Heavy Equipment Transport in Delaware?

Delaware's bustling chemical, real estate, and tourism sectors are driving construction surges from Seaford to Smyrna. But what's the secret behind these rapid developments? It's the smooth movement of heavy machinery from one site to another, ensuring projects stay on track. For this, you need a transport partner that's adept at swiftly, safely, and securely transporting dozers, graders, and excavators. Delaware's top construction teams trust lowboy carriers for this crucial task, emphasizing experience and capability. That's where the lowboy carriers in Number 1 Auto Transport's network shine, ensuring your projects never miss a beat.

Navigating Delaware's roads with heavy equipment is an art and a science. The seasoned lowboy carrier drivers in our network are masters at it, trained to manage oversized loads and navigate through bustling highways. Ready to elevate your construction game with reliable equipment transport?

Secure your free instant quote now and let's set things in motion!

What Moves on Lowboy and Step Deck Trailers

  • Dozers and road building equipment
  • Graders and paving equipment
  • Excavators and wheel loaders
  • Tractors and farm implements
  • Cranes, lifts, and aerial booms
  • Skid steers and compact track loaders

Why Lowboy and RGN Transport Works for Delaware

  • Height Compliance

Lowboy decks sit 18 to 24 inches off the ground. Tall machinery clears bridges and overpasses on I-95, I-495, US-13, and SR 1.

  • Stability and Capacity

Step deck and lowboy trailers carry the weight of full-size dozers, graders, and excavators without straining the suspension.

  • Permit and Escort Expertise

Carriers in our network handle DelDOT oversize and overweight hauling permits, and they plan around DelDOT's holiday limits, when permitted moves stop from noon the day before a major holiday until 9 a.m. after it.

Equipment that does not fit on a step deck moves on a Removable Gooseneck (RGN) trailer. The front detaches so tracked machinery rolls on without ramps. Best for excavators, dozers, and equipment without functional drive systems.

Moving to Delaware: What to Do After Your Car Arrives

Most people shipping into Delaware are relocating or reporting to Dover Air Force Base or a Guard unit in New Castle. Delaware gives you 60 days, and every car with an out-of-state title goes through a DMV inspection lane before it gets a Delaware title. Here is what actually applies.

Delaware law gives a new resident 60 days after moving here to title and register a car. It all happens at a DMV office in Wilmington, Delaware City, Dover, or Georgetown. First you need Delaware insurance, then a free inspection at a DMV lane, then the title and registration. A car coming in from another state also owes a one-time document fee of 5.25 percent of its value, unless you paid sales tax or a similar tax on it to another state within the last 90 days.

The Document Fee on a Car You Already Own

Delaware charges a one-time document fee when a car from another state is titled here. It is 5.25 percent of the car's value, and the minimum is $8. For a car bought and registered in another state, state law figures the fee on its fair market value on the day you title it in Delaware.

There is one way around the fee. If you paid sales tax, a transfer tax, or a similar tax on the purchase to another state within 90 days before you title the car here, the fee does not apply. Bring proof of the tax you paid, along with the other state's title and registration.

Inspection and Emissions at a DMV Lane

Every car with an out-of-state title goes through inspection at a DMV inspection lane before it gets a Delaware title. The DMV inspects at all four of its offices, and there is no fee. Your car's model year and weight decide whether it needs the full inspection or just a VIN check, but every car gets a safety inspection. Bring your title or registration to the lane. See the DMV's inspection information page before you go.

The full inspection includes an emissions test in all three counties. Gas cars from 1968 to 1995 get an idle test at the tailpipe. Gas cars from 1996 on and diesels from 1997 on, under 8,500 pounds, get an OBD II scan. To renew your registration later, you show a passing inspection, and you can have it done up to 90 days early.

Insurance and License

Delaware requires liability coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for injuries, and $10,000 for property damage. Those limits took effect in December 2017. You also need personal injury protection of at least $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident. Insurance from another state is not accepted to title and register a car here, so set up a Delaware policy first.

You have 60 days after becoming a resident to apply for a Delaware driver's license. Bring your old license, proof of legal presence, proof of your Social Security number, and two proofs of Delaware residency. A Class D license costs $50 and lasts 8 years. The written and road tests are normally waived if your old license is valid.

Take your out-of-state title, your Delaware insurance card, and your inspection report to a DMV office. The title fee is $35, or $55 with a lien, and registration is $40 a year for a passenger car. Since October 1, 2025, cars rated at 6,000 pounds or less add a yearly fee of $110 if electric, $85 if a plug-in hybrid, and $60 if a hybrid that does not plug in. Check current fees with the Delaware DMV before you go.

Delaware Seasonal Shipping Guide

Delaware's busy months follow the snowbird runs to Florida, Texas, Arizona, and Nevada and the summer PCS season at Dover. Nor'easters and snow set the pace in winter, and hurricanes can reach the coast in late summer and fall. Here is what to expect month by month.

Snowbird Runs to Florida, Texas, Arizona, and Nevada

Our Florida page puts snowbird season at October to April. Cars head south from October through December and come back north in March and April. Our Texas page shows the same pattern. Our Arizona page has winter residents arriving in October and November and heading home in April and May, and our Nevada page has October and November pulling carriers toward Las Vegas, with snowbirds starting home in March. All four lanes are on this page's tables, so book early in those months. See our snowbird auto transport page for booking lead times and price locking.

PCS Season and Storm Season

PCS season runs May to August. Book 3 to 4 weeks out for a move to or from Dover Air Force Base or a Guard base in New Castle. In winter, a nor'easter or a snowstorm can hold a truck for a day, and a hurricane can do the same on the coast in late summer and fall, so build a day of slack into a pickup in those months.

Delaware has no route guide, and this page publishes no seasonal figure beyond the 2 to 3 week booking advice in its FAQ. The snowbird windows and lead times come from our Florida auto transport page (October to April, 2 to 4 weeks), our Texas auto transport page (south from October to December, north in March and April), our Arizona auto transport page (in during October and November, home in April and May), and our Nevada auto transport page (October and November toward Las Vegas, home starting in March), whose lanes appear on this page's tables. None of the four names Delaware on its snowbird list. The PCS window and its lead time also come from the Texas page. We publish no seasonal premium for Delaware, so your quote carries the real number.

Delaware Weather Factors

  • Nor'easters

NOAA calls nor'easters Delaware's most common coastal storms, with strong winds, heavy rain or snow, and coastal flooding. They are most active from midwinter through spring and peak in March. The National Weather Service says they hit most often and hardest from September to April.

  • Coastal and Tidal Flooding

No spot in Delaware is more than 8 miles from tidal water. A slow coastal storm on October 29 and 30, 2021 pushed water into the bays and caused some moderate to major tidal flooding on Delaware Bay, with gusts near 60 mph at the coast. A flooded road near the shore can hold a pickup.

  • Hurricanes and Tropical Storms

NOAA says tropical storms and hurricanes sometimes reach Delaware in late summer and fall. Irene in 2011 and Sandy in 2012 caused significant damage, and Sandy caused record flooding along the Atlantic and Delaware Bay coasts. A storm headed for the coast can push back a beach pickup.

  • Snow and State Driving Limits

Delaware averages 9 to 20 inches of snow a year, and on January 3, 2022 a storm dropped 6 to 12 inches across most of the state. In a state of emergency, the Governor can order a Level 2 Driving Restriction or a Level 3 Driving Ban that keeps all but essential drivers off the roads. Carriers wait until it lifts.

Storm Response Plan

  1. Monitor

We track nor'easters, coastal flood warnings, hurricane forecasts, DelDOT's travel map, and Delaware driving restrictions several days out and flag any Delaware shipment in the path.

  2. Communicate

Your dedicated agent calls 24 to 48 hours before the affected pickup or delivery window.

  3. Hold, Reroute, or Refund

No penalty for weather-driven changes. We reroute, delay, or refund based on your call.

Booking lead time during peak Delaware windows: 3 to 4 weeks from May to August on PCS orders. 2 to 4 weeks for the snowbird runs from October to December and from March to May. 2 to 3 weeks the rest of the year, as our FAQ advises.

  • Can I transport a car to or from Delaware if it's not running?

Yes, carriers in our network are equipped with a winch to help pull the vehicle onto the trailer. Please let your dedicated shipping agent know if the car breaks, rolls, and steers.

  • Can I pack my car when transporting it to or from Delaware?

While some personal belongings can be transported inside your vehicle for your convenience, there are restrictions. The total weight must be under 100 pounds, and for security reasons, they should be stored in the trunk or back seat, remaining below the window line. It's important to note that any personal belongings shipped within the car are not covered by the standard transport insurance in case of damage or loss.

  • Does my vehicle need to have plates when shipping it to or from Delaware?

No, but sometimes a carrier will have to meet in a parking lot due to the size of his truck and the destination street layout. If so, you will most likely have to drive the car a few blocks.

  • How should I prep my car before shipping it?

It's recommended to wash your car so the transport carrier can do a proper inspection at pickup. Remove any toll tags so you don't incur fees while in transit. It's also best to remove any loose parts to prevent any damage during transport.

  • What is the cheapest way to transport a car to or from Delaware?

The cheapest way to ship a car to or from Delaware is on an open car trailer.

Yes, all the carriers in our network are vetted and screened with the DOT and FMCSA to make sure they have up to date and adequate cargo coverage to fully protect your car during transport.

  • What happens upon pick-up and delivery of my car?

The transport carrier will conduct a thorough inspection with you at the predetermined pickup location, noting any existing dents or scratches. The same inspection will be done upon delivery.

  • How far in advance do I need to schedule my Delaware car shipping service?

To ensure we can fulfill your preferred delivery timeframe, scheduling your car shipment with ample lead time is highly recommended. Ideally, booking your transport at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance allows for optimal planning and execution.

  • Do I have to register my car in Delaware after it arrives?

Yes, if you are moving here. Delaware law gives you 60 days after you become a resident to title and register your car at a DMV office. Every car with an out-of-state title goes through a free inspection at a DMV lane first, and the full inspection includes an emissions test. A car coming in from another state owes a 5.25 percent document fee unless you paid sales tax or a similar tax on it to another state within the last 90 days, and you need a Delaware insurance policy. You also have 60 days to apply for a Delaware driver's license.
