How to Ship a Car to Rhode Island?

The best way to answer the question of "How to ship my car to Rhode Island" is to show you how we operate our auto shipping business. We know car owners won't trust just any car shipping company to move their vehicle across states. They want experience and reputation. Here's how we do it:

  • First, once your order is placed, we'll start moving a car to Rhode Island. This usually happens within a week. We'll continue updating you on important information, including the time and date of pickup, tracking number, and the truck driver's number.
  • Then, the truck driver will call you to finalize delivery plans. The drivers in our carrier network strive to take care of all vehicles carried as if they are their own. Protecting your car against any damage from delivery is their ultimate concern. You'll also sign and receive a Bill of Lading before the driver leaves.
  • Finally, once the vehicle arrives in Rhode Island, you and the driver will inspect the vehicle for any damage. This is also the time when you will sign the final inspection report. It's that simple!

Rhode Island Auto Transport Routes, Transit Times, and Pricing

Depending on the car's location, most pickup windows are 24 to 72 hours from when the vehicle is ready to be picked up. This window could take up to 5 days in remote areas. Rhode Island car shipping turnaround time for a destination under 1,000 miles is 2 to 3 days. From 1,000 to 1,750 miles, the transit time is estimated to be 4 to 6 days. From 1,750 to 2,500 miles, the transit time is estimated at 7 to 10 days.

Step Deck or Lowboy Trailers in Rhode Island

Rhode Island is a small state, and many towns and cities are close together. That density can work against construction crews trying to move equipment, though. Crowded, busy roadways and constant road construction mean that moving equipment from one project to the next might not be far by distance but could take a fair amount of time and cause a fair number of headaches. Even though construction crews in Rhode Island can move their own gear, it's more important that crews keep their skilled hands working instead of pulling them away from their specialties to move material handlers, pavers, excavators, backhoes, and other equipment. That's why construction teams across the state rely on the Rhode Island equipment shipping experts to ensure they stay on schedule and everything gets to the job site safely.

Transporting heavy construction equipment is a serious business. The veteran lowboy carrier drivers in our network are trained to handle oversized loads and high gross tonnage. The drivers in Number 1 Auto's carrier network are skilled in moving heavy equipment in and out of job sites and navigating busy highways with unique loads.

Two white flatbed work trucks with yellow bumper guards loaded nose to tail on a step deck trailer behind a silver semi under a clear blue sky, the kind of heavy haul we arrange to and from Rhode Island

What Moves on Lowboy and Step Deck Trailers

  • Material handlers and forklifts
  • Pavers and paving equipment
  • Excavators, backhoes, and loaders
  • Flatbed work trucks and dump trucks
  • Cranes, lifts, and aerial booms
  • Skid steers and compact track loaders

Why Lowboy and RGN Transport Works for Rhode Island

  • Height Compliance

Lowboy decks sit 18 to 24 inches off the ground. Tall machinery clears bridges and overpasses on I-95, I-195, and I-295.

  • Stability and Capacity

Step deck and lowboy trailers carry the weight of full-size dozers, cranes, and excavators without straining the suspension.

  • Permit and Escort Expertise

Carriers in our network handle RIDOT oversize and overweight permits and plan around posted bridges. Oversize loads cannot cross the I-195 Washington Bridge in Providence, a limit RIDOT expects to last until December 2028.

Equipment that does not fit on a step deck moves on a Removable Gooseneck (RGN) trailer. The front detaches so tracked machinery rolls on without ramps. Best for excavators, dozers, and equipment without functional drive systems.

When Each Option Makes Sense

  • Open auto transport carrier loading vehicles in Rhode Island

    Open Transport in Rhode Island

Open Auto Transport to Rhode Island Thinking about using open auto transport for your Rhode Island car transport needs? Open carriers, like those used by dealerships, ensure secure and timely car transport to and from Rhode Island. Equipped with advanced technology, your vehicle arrives within seven days, offering a cost-effective solution that protects against road vibration, excess mileage, and more. Trust Number 1 Auto Transport for dependable open auto transport tailored to your Rhode Island car shipping needs.

  • Enclosed transport carrier with high-value vehicle in Rhode Island

    Enclosed Transport in Rhode Island

Enclosed Auto Transport to Rhode Island The safest way to transport your car to Rhode Island is within an enclosed auto transport. There are two options for shipping your car via enclosed auto transport: Soft-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: The heavy canvas covering the carriers protects your car from wind-blown debris, rain, sleet, snow, and other elements. Hard-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: In addition to the advantages of soft-sided carriers, hard-sided carriers offer protection for your car in the unlikely event your car is exposed to possible damage during transportation.

Rhode Island weather note. Whether tropical storms are coming up the seaboard or winter blows are coming down from the arctic, Rhode Island is square in the path of bad weather throughout the year. That's probably one of the reasons it has the worst roads in the nation. Enclosed transport is an excellent route whether you want to protect your vehicle from gusting summer storms, blowing blizzards, or just terrible roads. When you send your vehicle via enclosed auto transport, you'll avoid damage from rain, wind-blown debris in storms, and other curveballs the weather throws out there. Having your car shipped to Rhode Island in an enclosed carrier is a smart investment for your investment.

Not sure which one fits? Tell us the year, make, and model and we will say so straight.

Should You Drive or Ship Your Car to or from Rhode Island?

No route guide covers a Rhode Island lane yet, so we do not publish a driving cost for one. Here is how the two options compare on everything except the price.

Moving to Rhode Island: What to Do After Your Car Arrives

Most people shipping into Rhode Island are relocating or reporting to Naval Station Newport or Quonset. Rhode Island gives you 30 days, and a police VIN check comes before you register. Here is what actually applies.

Rhode Island gives you 30 days after you move here to get a Rhode Island title and registration for your car. First comes a VIN check at a local police department, because the car was registered or titled in another state. Sales tax is due only if you were a Rhode Island resident when you bought the car. Within 5 days of registering, the car needs a safety and emissions inspection.

No Sales Tax on a Car Bought While You Lived Elsewhere

Rhode Island's 7 percent sales or use tax is owed on a car you bring in if you were a resident, in whole or in part, when you bought it. If you bought it while living in another state, you claim the exemption on the Division of Taxation's forms when you register. If you did owe Rhode Island tax, tax you legally paid to another state counts as a credit.

Bring your title. Rhode Island requires one unless the car is older than model year 2001 and came from a state that does not title it. If two owners are on the title, both must be present, or the absent owner's signature must be notarized on the registration application.

VIN Check, Then Safety and Emissions

Every car previously registered or titled in another state needs a VIN check before it is registered here. Your local police department does it. Bring the car and the original title, or a copy if there is a lien. Call ahead, because not every department takes cash. The DMV can issue a 5-day plate just for the drive to the VIN check.

Within 5 days of registering, the car must have a valid Rhode Island inspection sticker or pass a safety and emissions inspection. The test costs $55 at an authorized station, and the sticker is good for two years. Electric cars skip the emissions test but still need the safety check. See the DMV's safety and emissions inspections page for details.

Insurance and License

Insurance is mandatory in Rhode Island, and your insurer must be licensed to do business here. State law sets the minimum at $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage. A $75,000 combined single limit also meets the law. The law that sets those amounts was last amended in 2014, and the amounts did not change. You can show proof on paper or on your phone.

State law gives you 30 days after you establish residency to get a Rhode Island driver's license. Bring your out-of-state license, your Social Security number, and two proofs of Rhode Island residency, such as a utility bill. Your first Rhode Island license is valid for up to two years and expires on your birthday.

Take your title, the Application for Registration (TR-1), the tax exemption forms, proof of Rhode Island insurance, and the completed VIN check to the DMV. A title costs $53.50. Registration is set by weight: $30 a year up to 4,000 pounds, $40 up to 5,000, and $48 up to 6,000, plus a $20 DOT surcharge per year and a $3.50 technology surcharge. Since January 1, 2026, electric cars add $200 a year, plug-in hybrids $100, and hybrids $50. Check current fees with the Rhode Island DMV before you go.

Rhode Island Seasonal Shipping Guide

Snowbird Runs to Florida, Arizona, and Nevada

Our Florida page puts snowbird season at October to April. Cars head south from October through December and come back north in March and April. Our Arizona page has winter residents arriving in October and November and heading home in April and May. Our Nevada page has October and November pulling carriers toward Las Vegas, with snowbirds starting home in March. All three lanes are on this page's tables, so book early in those months. See our snowbird auto transport page for booking lead times and price locking.

PCS Season, Hurricanes, and Winter

PCS season runs May to August. Book 3 to 4 weeks out for a move to or from Naval Station Newport, Quonset, or a Coast Guard station. Hurricane season opens June 1 and peaks in September. In winter, a nor'easter or a heavy snow can hold a truck for a day, so build a day of slack into a January to March pickup.

Rhode Island has no route guide, and this page publishes no seasonal figure beyond the 2 to 3 week booking advice in its FAQ. The snowbird windows and lead times come from our Florida auto transport page (October to April, 2 to 4 weeks, and September as a low-rate month), our Arizona auto transport page (in during October and November, home in April and May), and our Nevada auto transport page (October and November toward Las Vegas, home starting in March), whose lanes appear on this page's tables. None of the three names Rhode Island on its snowbird list. The PCS window and its lead time come from our Texas auto transport page. We publish no seasonal premium for Rhode Island, so your quote carries the real number.

Rhode Island Weather Factors

  • Nor'easters

Nor'easters are most frequent and most violent from September to April. NOAA says the clash of cold inland air and the warmer Atlantic powers them, and the state's coastline is highly vulnerable to their flooding.

  • Hurricanes and Tropical Storms

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. In 1938, a hurricane put downtown Providence under a storm tide of nearly 20 feet. In 2011, Irene left half of the state's residents without power.

  • More Snow Inland

NOAA puts average snowfall at about 20 inches on Block Island and the southeastern shores of Narragansett Bay, and 40 to 55 inches in the western part of the state. A western pickup can slip a day after a big storm.

  • Snow Parking Bans

Cities and towns often issue parking bans before a snowstorm, RIDOT says, so the plows can clear the streets. A street pickup under a ban may meet the truck at a nearby lot instead.

Storm Response Plan

  1. Monitor

We track nor'easter and hurricane forecasts, winter storm warnings, RIDOT travel advisories, and local parking bans several days out and flag any Rhode Island shipment in the path.

  2. Communicate

Your dedicated agent calls 24 to 48 hours before the affected pickup or delivery window.

  3. Hold, Reroute, or Refund

No penalty for weather-driven changes. We reroute, delay, or refund based on your call.

Booking lead time during peak Rhode Island windows: 3 to 4 weeks from May to August on PCS orders. 2 to 4 weeks on Florida lanes and 3 to 4 weeks on Arizona and Nevada lanes for the snowbird runs from October to December. 2 to 4 weeks for the runs home from March to May. 2 to 3 weeks the rest of the year, as our FAQ advises.

While some personal belongings can be transported inside your vehicle for your convenience, there are restrictions. The total weight must be under 100 pounds, and for security reasons, they should be stored in the trunk or back seat, remaining below the window line. It's important to note that any personal belongings shipped within the car are not covered by the standard transport insurance in case of damage or loss.

  • Does my vehicle need to have plates when shipping it to or from Rhode Island?

No, but sometimes a carrier will have to meet in a parking lot due to the size of his truck and the destination street layout. If so, you will most likely have to drive the car a few blocks.

  • How should I prep my car before shipping it?

It's recommended to wash your car so the transport carrier can do a proper inspection at pickup. Remove any toll tags so you don't incur fees while in transit. It's also best to remove any loose parts to prevent any damage during transport.

  • What is the cheapest way to transport a car to or from Rhode Island?

The cheapest way to ship a car to or from Rhode Island is on an open car trailer.

  • Should I drive or ship my car to Rhode Island?

If the trip is a short distance, you should consider driving it to save money. Shipping is ideal for long distances, valuable cars, or if you don't want the hassle of driving yourself.

  • Is my vehicle insured when using a Rhode Island car shipping service?

Yes, all the carriers in our network are vetted and screened with the DOT and FMCSA to make sure they have up to date and adequate cargo coverage to fully protect your car during transport.

  • How do I get a quote for shipping my car to Rhode Island?

Most car shipping carriers request a 3-day (weekday) window for pickup. Once you have your desired pickup window, provide us with the year, make, model, and we will be able to provide you with a Rhode Island car shipping rate.

  • How do I pay for my Rhode Island auto transport service?

Number 1 Auto Transport offers a variety of convenient payment methods to ensure a smooth transaction for our customers. We accept all major credit cards for your convenience. Additionally, we facilitate secure electronic transfers through established platforms (Zelle, Venmo, Cashapp, Paypal) as well as ACH and wire transfers. For alternative payment preferences, certified and bank checks are also accepted.

  • What documents do I need to provide to ship my car?

You do not need to provide any documents to ship your car. However, it is recommended to sign a Bill of Lading before the carrier leaves.

  • What happens upon pick-up and delivery of my car?

The transport carrier will conduct a thorough inspection with you at the predetermined pickup location, noting any existing dents or scratches. The same inspection will be done upon delivery.

  • How far in advance do I need to schedule my Rhode Island car shipping service?

To ensure we can fulfill your preferred delivery timeframe, scheduling your car shipment with ample lead time is highly recommended. Ideally, booking your transport at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance allows for optimal planning and execution.

  • Do I have to register my car in Rhode Island after it arrives?

Yes, if you are moving here. Rhode Island gives you 30 days after you move to get a Rhode Island title and registration. A car registered or titled in another state needs a VIN check at a local police department first. Sales tax is due only if you were a Rhode Island resident when you bought the car. Within 5 days of registering, the car needs a safety and emissions inspection, and you have 30 days to get a Rhode Island driver's license.
