Iowa has plenty of reasons to settle down as well. It's the second most capable state for wind generating capacity for electrical energy, by percentage, and the top state for sourcing power for its residents from the wind. With so many wind farms, it is also home to some of the biggest producers of turbines and components, including Acciona Energy of West Branch and TPI Composites of Newton, Iowa. It's a significant player in the agricultural industry, the top state in America for corn production and hog farming, and often the top for soybeans.

How to Ship a Car to Iowa?
The best way to answer the question of "How to ship my car to Iowa" is to show you how we operate our auto shipping business. We understand that car owners in Iowa won't trust just any car shipping company to move their vehicle across states. They value experience and reputation. Here's how we do it:
- First, once your order is placed, we'll initiate the process of moving a car to Iowa. This typically occurs within a week. We'll keep you informed with important details, such as the time and date of pickup, tracking number, and the truck driver's contact information.
- Next, the truck driver will contact you to confirm delivery plans. The drivers in our carrier network are committed to treating all vehicles as if they were their own, prioritizing the protection of your car against any damage during delivery. Before the driver departs, you'll sign and receive a Bill of Lading.
- Finally, upon the vehicle's arrival in Iowa, both you and the driver will inspect it for any damage. This is also the time when you will sign the final inspection report. It's that simple!

Need to Transport Heavy Equipment with a Step Deck or Lowboy Trailer?
In the ever-changing economy of Iowa, from burgeoning industries in Council Bluffs to thriving businesses in Cedar Rapids, the demand for efficient movement of construction and agricultural equipment is paramount. Iowa's agricultural heart beats strong, necessitating the frequent transportation of hefty farm machinery, including combines and tractors, across its vast fields. For this critical task, Iowa's construction crews and farmers turn to the trusted expertise of Iowa auto transport specialists. They count on Number 1 Auto Transport, the renowned Iowa heavy equipment shipping authority, to smoothly relocate their dump trucks, excavators, and other vital machinery, ensuring their operations stay on track without missing a beat.
At Number 1 Auto Transport, we understand the gravity of transporting heavy equipment. The seasoned lowboy carrier drivers in our network are adept at managing oversized loads and navigating the complexities of high gross tonnage. With precision and skill, they expertly maneuver heavy machinery in and out of job sites and along Iowa's diverse roadways, ensuring each piece of equipment reaches its destination safely and efficiently.

What Moves on Lowboy and Step Deck Trailers
- Combines, tractors, and farm implements
- Dump trucks and work trucks
- Excavators, dozers, and loaders
- Skid steers, backhoes, and compact track loaders
- Cranes, lifts, and aerial booms
- Industrial generators and pumps
Why Lowboy and RGN Transport Works for Iowa
Height Compliance
Lowboy decks sit 18 to 24 inches off the ground. Tall machinery clears bridges and overpasses on I-80, I-35, I-29, and I-380.
Stability and Capacity
Step deck and lowboy trailers carry the weight of full-size dozers, cranes, and combines without straining the suspension.
Permit and Escort Expertise
Carriers in our network handle Iowa DOT oversize and overweight permits for state and interstate highways, plus the separate city or county permits a route off those roads needs.
Equipment that does not fit on a step deck moves on a Removable Gooseneck (RGN) trailer. The front detaches so tracked machinery rolls on without ramps. Best for excavators, dozers, and equipment without functional drive systems.

Should You Drive or Ship Your Car to or from Iowa?
No route guide covers an Iowa lane yet, so we do not publish a driving cost for one. Here is how the two options compare on everything except the price.
Driving vs. Shipping, Side by Side
| Factor | Driving yourself | Shipping your car |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Fuel, lodging, meals, tolls, and wear, paid as you go | One quote, locked at booking |
| Miles on the odometer | Every mile of the trip, plus any detours | Zero miles added |
| Days | Your own days behind the wheel, then a trip back | 2 to 3 days under 1,000 miles and 7 to 10 days from 1,750 to 2,500 miles, none of it yours |
| Risk | Blizzards that close I-80 and I-35, drifting snow, tornado warnings, high winds, and fatigue | Covered by the carrier's cargo insurance |
| Effort | Route planning, hotels, winter road reports, and a flight home | Picked up and delivered for you |
The transit windows are the ones this page has always published. Your quote supplies the shipping price, so the table leaves dollar figures out.
The bottom line. Driving makes sense on a short run, the way our FAQ below says. For a long haul, a winter move, or a car you want kept off the road, shipping gives you the days back and keeps the miles off the car.

Moving to Iowa: What to Do After Your Car Arrives
Most people shipping into Iowa are relocating or reporting to Camp Dodge or one of the two Air Guard wings. Iowa gives you 30 days to title and register, and a car you bought back home usually skips the one-time fee. Here is what actually applies.
Iowa law requires you to title and register your car with a county treasurer within 30 days of establishing residency. That holds even if your old plates are still valid. A car you bought for use in your old state owes no fee for new registration, Iowa's one-time charge of $10 plus 5 percent of the price. Iowa's registration steps list no safety inspection, and Iowa has no emissions test.
No One-Time Fee on a Car Bought Back Home
Iowa charges a one-time fee for new registration the first time a car is registered here: $10 plus 5 percent of the purchase price. A car you bring when you move is exempt, as long as you bought it for use in your old state and not for use in Iowa. You claim the exemption with a signed affidavit when you apply. The county treasurer weighs how long you owned the car before the move, whether it was registered there, and how many miles you drove it there.
Bought the car close to the move, with Iowa in mind? You get credit for sales, use, or new registration tax you had to pay and did pay to the other state. If that tax was less than Iowa's fee, you pay the difference. Bring purchase records, canceled checks, or invoices as proof.
No Inspection Step and No Emissions Test
The Iowa DOT's steps for a new resident list the out-of-state title and a signed application for an Iowa title and registration. They list no safety inspection and no VIN check. If a lender holds a lien on the car, note it on the application.
Iowa has no emissions test either. The EPA's list of state and local testing programs, updated September 18, 2026, does not include Iowa.
Insurance and License
Iowa requires liability coverage of at least $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $15,000 for property damage. Those limits are old: a 1988 legislative study listed the same three figures as current law. Keep your insurance card in the car, on paper or on your phone, whenever you drive.
Iowa counts you as a resident for licensing once you do any of several things, such as registering to vote, enrolling a child in an Iowa public school, taking a permanent job here, or living in Iowa 30 days in a row. From then on, a license from another state is no longer enough, but the DOT publishes no deadline in days for the switch. With a valid license from another state, you may not need the knowledge or driving test, but you still pass a vision test. A regular Class C license costs $4 for each year it runs.
Take the out-of-state title, a signed application (Form 411007), and your ID to any county treasurer's office. Iowa law sets the title fee at $30, plus a $5 surcharge. The yearly registration fee is 1 percent of the car's value plus 40 cents per 100 pounds. The value part drops as the car ages, and from 12 model years on the fee is a flat $50. Electric cars add $130 a year and plug-in hybrids $65. Check current fees with the Iowa DOT before you go.
Iowa Seasonal Shipping Guide
Iowa's busy months follow the snowbird runs to Florida, Texas, and Arizona and the summer PCS season. Blizzards and drifting snow set the pace in winter, and tornadoes and high winds in spring and summer. Here is what to expect month by month.

Snowbird Runs to Florida, Texas, and Arizona
Our Florida page puts snowbird season at October to April. Cars head south from October through December and come back north in March and April. Our Texas page shows the same pattern, and our Arizona page has winter residents arriving in October and November and heading home in April and May. All three lanes are on this page's tables, so book early in those months. See our snowbird auto transport page for booking lead times and price locking.
PCS Season and Winter
PCS season runs May to August. Book 3 to 4 weeks out for a move to or from Camp Dodge or one of the Air Guard wings. In winter, a blizzard can close stretches of I-80 and I-35 until the plows catch up, so build a day of slack into a January to March pickup.
| Window | Demand | What drives it | Booking lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| October to December | Snowbirds head south | Florida's snowbird season opens, and snowbirds head south to Texas and Arizona | 2 to 4 weeks on Florida lanes, 3 to 4 on Texas and Arizona lanes |
| January to February | Base | Snowbirds stay south. Blizzards and drifting snow set the pace in Iowa | 2 to 3 weeks, as our FAQ advises |
| March to April | Snowbirds head home | Cars come back north from Florida and Texas. Arizona's return runs April to May | 2 to 4 weeks on Florida lanes, 3 on Texas lanes, 3 to 4 on Arizona lanes |
| May to August | Peak (PCS season) | PCS orders to and from Camp Dodge and the two Air Guard wings | 3 to 4 weeks |
| September | Base | The quiet month before the fall run. Our Florida page names it a low-rate month | 2 to 3 weeks |
Iowa has no route guide, and this page publishes no seasonal figure beyond the 2 to 3 week booking advice in its FAQ. The snowbird windows and lead times come from our Florida auto transport page (October to April, 2 to 4 weeks), our Texas auto transport page (south from October to December, north in March and April), and our Arizona auto transport page (in during October and November, home in April and May), whose lanes appear on this page's tables. None of the three names Iowa on its snowbird list. The PCS window and its lead time also come from the Texas page. We publish no seasonal premium for Iowa, so your quote carries the real number.

Iowa Weather Factors
Blizzards That Close I-80
On March 15, 2026, a blizzard with whiteout conditions closed I-80 from near Council Bluffs to West Des Moines and from Altoona to Coralville, plus I-35 from Ames to the Minnesota line. The roads reopened the next day. A closed interstate holds every truck on it.
Ice and Drifting Snow
In January 2024, drifting snow and ice made I-80 west of Iowa City impassable. In December 2025, crashes on icy roads closed I-80 from Coralville to Walcott for most of a day. Carriers wait for treated roads before they load.
Record Tornado Year
Iowa set its record in 2024 with 125 tornadoes, topping the 120 of 2004. April and May brought 49 each. A warning on the route holds a truck until the storm passes.
Derecho and High Winds
On August 10, 2020, a derecho swept central and eastern Iowa, with an official 99 mph gust at Marshalltown and gusts estimated at 120 mph or more near Cedar Rapids. The Iowa DOT warns trucks and trailers to use extreme caution in high winds.
Storm Response Plan
Monitor
We track blizzard warnings, Iowa 511 road closures, tornado watches, and high wind warnings several days out and flag any Iowa shipment in the path.
Communicate
Your dedicated agent calls 24 to 48 hours before the affected pickup or delivery window.
Hold, Reroute, or Refund
No penalty for weather-driven changes. We reroute, delay, or refund based on your call.
Booking lead time during peak Iowa windows: 3 to 4 weeks from May to August on PCS orders. 2 to 4 weeks for the snowbird runs from October to December and from March to May. 2 to 3 weeks the rest of the year, as our FAQ advises.

It's recommended to wash your car so the transport carrier can do a proper inspection at pickup. Remove any toll tags so you don't incur fees while in transit. It's also best to remove any loose parts to prevent any damage during transport.
What is the cheapest way to transport a car to or from Iowa?
The cheapest way to ship a car to or from Iowa is on an open car trailer.
Should I drive or ship my car to Iowa?
If the trip is a short distance, you should consider driving it to save money. Shipping is ideal for long distances, valuable cars, or if you don't want the hassle of driving yourself.
Is my vehicle insured when using an Iowa car shipping service?
Yes, all the carriers in our network are vetted and screened with the DOT and FMCSA to make sure they have up to date and adequate cargo coverage to fully protect your car during transport.
How do I get a quote for shipping my car to Iowa?
Most car shipping carriers request a 3-day (weekday) window for pickup. Once you have your desired pickup window, provide us with the year, make, model, and we will be able to provide you with an Iowa car shipping rate.
How do I pay for my Iowa auto transport service?
Number 1 Auto Transport offers a variety of convenient payment methods to ensure a smooth transaction for our customers. We accept all major credit cards for your convenience. Additionally, we facilitate secure electronic transfers through established platforms (Zelle, Venmo, Cashapp, Paypal) as well as ACH and wire transfers. For alternative payment preferences, certified and bank checks are also accepted.
What documents do I need to provide to ship my car?
You do not need to provide any documents to ship your car. However, it is recommended to sign a Bill of Lading before the carrier leaves.
What happens upon pick-up and delivery of my car?
The transport carrier will conduct a thorough inspection with you at the predetermined pickup location, noting any existing dents or scratches. The same inspection will be done upon delivery.
How far in advance do I need to schedule my Iowa car shipping service?
To ensure we can fulfill your preferred delivery timeframe, scheduling your car shipment with ample lead time is highly recommended. Ideally, booking your transport at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance allows for optimal planning and execution.
Do I have to register my car in Iowa after it arrives?
Yes, if you are moving here. Iowa law requires you to title and register your car with a county treasurer within 30 days of establishing residency, even if your old plates are still valid. A car you bought for use in your old state owes no fee for new registration. Iowa's registration steps list no safety inspection, Iowa has no emissions test, and the minimum liability coverage is $20,000 per person, $40,000 per accident, and $15,000 for property damage.
