How to Ship a Car to Vermont?
The best way to answer the question of "How to ship my car to Vermont" is to show you how we operate our auto shipping business. We know car owners won't trust just any car shipping company to move their vehicle across states. They want experience and reputation. Here's how we do it:
- First, once your order is placed, we'll start the process of moving a car to Vermont. This usually happens within a week. We'll continue updating you on important information, including the time and date of pickup, tracking number, and the truck driver's number.
- Then, the truck driver will call you to finalize delivery plans. The drivers in our carrier network strive to take care of all vehicles carried as if they are their own. Protecting your car against any damage from delivery is their ultimate concern. You'll also sign and receive a Bill of Lading before the driver leaves.
- Finally, once the vehicle arrives in Vermont, you and the driver will inspect the vehicle for any damage. This is also the time when you will sign the final inspection report. It's that simple!
Vermont Auto Transport Routes, Transit Times, and Pricing

Need to Transport an Oversized Vehicle on a Lowboy or Step Deck Trailer in Vermont?
With cities and towns stretching so far apart and the gravel and dirt roads that make up some of the rural roadways, having a heavy equipment transporter who knows what they are doing is integral to construction crews looking to succeed in Vermont. Hauling heavy equipment such as skidders and feller bunchers for the forestry industry or dozers, excavators, and graders for the building industry, lowboy services like those we provide at Number 1 Auto Transport help to get work done. Instead of pulling skilled workers away from their specialties to move equipment, many construction and timber businesses choose to get a third party to move their equipment for them. That's why construction teams across the Green Mountain State rely on the Vermont equipment transport experts at Number 1 Auto to ensure they stay on schedule and that everything gets to the next job site safely.
Transporting heavy construction equipment is a serious business. The veteran lowboy carrier drivers in our network are trained to handle oversized loads and high gross tonnage. They are skilled in moving heavy equipment in and out of job sites and navigating busy highways with unique loads.
What Moves on Lowboy and Step Deck Trailers
- Skidders and feller bunchers
- Dozers, excavators, and graders
- Flatbed and work trucks
- Backhoes, loaders, and skid steers
- Cranes, lifts, and aerial booms
- Tractors and farm implements
Why Lowboy and RGN Transport Works for Vermont
Height Compliance
Lowboy decks sit 18 to 24 inches off the ground. Tall machinery clears bridges and overpasses on I-89 and I-91.
Stability and Capacity
Step deck and lowboy trailers carry the weight of full-size dozers, skidders, and graders without straining the suspension.
Permit and Escort Expertise
Carriers in our network get single trip permits from the Vermont DMV for oversize loads. Wide, long, and tall loads move only in daylight, the biggest loads stay off state highways on weekends and six holidays, and no permit overrides a posted road.
Equipment that does not fit on a step deck moves on a Removable Gooseneck (RGN) trailer. The front detaches so tracked machinery rolls on without ramps. Best for excavators, dozers, and equipment without functional drive systems.
Need a Vermont heavy haul quote? Send equipment specs and route. We come back with a price-locked rate.
Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport in Vermont

| Feature | Open | Enclosed |
|---|---|---|
| Share of US shipments | About 85% | About 15% |
| Vehicles per load | 8 to 10 | 2 to 6 |

Enclosed Transport in Vermont
Enclosed Auto Transport Service to Vermont The safest way to transport your car to Vermont is within an enclosed auto transport. There are two options for shipping your car via enclosed auto transport: Soft-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: The heavy canvas covering the carriers protects your car from wind-blown debris, rain, sleet, snow, and other elements. Hard-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: In addition to the advantages of soft-sided carriers, hard-sided carriers offer protection for your car in the unlikely event your car is exposed to possible damage during transportation.
Vermont weather note. Vermont's wintry terrain sets the stage for caution, particularly in the cooler months. Despite minor summer-winter threats, the state's challenging roads and limited major thruways demand careful consideration when transporting vehicles. Many Vermonters choose enclosed auto transport to navigate the gusty Green Mountains safely. Shielding your vehicle from rain, wind-blown debris, and unexpected weather curveballs, enclosed transport ensures a secure journey.
Not sure which one fits? Tell us the year, make, and model and we will say so straight.
Should You Drive or Ship Your Car to or from Vermont?
No route guide covers a Vermont lane yet, so we do not publish a driving cost for one. Here is how the two options compare on everything except the price.
Driving vs. Shipping, Side by Side
| Factor | Driving yourself | Shipping your car |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Fuel, lodging, meals, tolls, and wear, paid as you go | One quote, locked at booking |
| Miles on the odometer | Every mile of the trip, plus any detours | Zero miles added |
| Days | Your own days behind the wheel, then a trip back | 2 to 3 days under 1,000 miles and 7 to 10 days from 1,750 to 2,500 miles, none of it yours |
| Risk | Nor'easters from September to April, deep snow in the hills, mud season on dirt roads, and fatigue | Covered by the carrier's cargo insurance |
| Effort | Route planning, hotels, winter road reports, and a flight home | Picked up and delivered for you |
The transit windows are the ones this page has always published. Your quote supplies the shipping price, so the table leaves dollar figures out.
The bottom line. Driving makes sense on a short run, the way our FAQ below says. For a long haul, a winter move, or a car you want kept off the road, shipping gives you the days back and keeps the miles off the car.

Moving to Vermont: What to Do After Your Car Arrives
Most people shipping into Vermont are relocating or reporting to the 158th Fighter Wing, a Guard unit, or the Coast Guard in Burlington. Vermont gives you 60 days to register, and the inspection clock starts the day you do. Here is what actually applies.
Vermont requires new residents to register their cars no later than 60 days after moving here, or before the out-of-state registration expires if that comes first. You need a Vermont driver's license or ID to register. Once the car is registered, it has 15 days to pass a Vermont inspection. A car already registered in your name in a state that collects sales tax can skip Vermont's 6 percent purchase and use tax.
Purchase and Use Tax, and the Exemption for a Car You Own
Vermont's purchase and use tax is 6 percent of the purchase price or the J.D. Power clean trade-in value, whichever is greater. For a car already registered to you or your spouse in another state, the DMV uses the J.D. Power value, and the tax is due unless an exemption applies.
Vermont law exempts a car that has been registered to you in a state that charges a state sales or use tax on cars. Bring the title or registration in your name to show it. Tax you paid to another state on the same car also counts, and you pay only the difference. Property and excise taxes paid elsewhere do not count.
Title, Registration, and Inspection
Bring your title and current registration, a current odometer reading, and the Registration, Tax and Title Application, Form VD-119. If a lender holds your title, go in person to a DMV office with the lender's name and address and your out-of-state registration. A new title costs $42. Registration for a gas or diesel car is $91 for one year or $167 for two. Plug-in hybrids pay $135.50 a year and electric cars $178, because those fees include an EV infrastructure fee.
Vermont inspects every registered car once a year for safety and visual emissions, and cars 16 model years old or less also get an onboard diagnostics check. A car new to Vermont must pass inspection within 15 days of registration, at one of the private stations the DMV licenses. The DMV says there is no grace period. See its vehicle inspections page for the station locator.
Insurance and License
Vermont requires liability coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for injuries, and $10,000 for property damage. Every policy must also carry uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage of at least $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident. That coverage also pays up to $10,000 for property damage, after a $150 deductible. Carry proof of insurance whenever you drive.
You must get a Vermont driver's license no later than 60 days after moving here, or before your old license expires if that comes first. Bring your out-of-state license and proof of identity and Vermont residency. You take an eye exam, and you hand in the old license when the new one is issued. A four-year license costs $62.
Get your Vermont license first, then bring your title, current registration, odometer reading, and Form VD-119 to a DMV office, and have the car inspected within 15 days of registering. Check current fees and forms with the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles before you go.
Vermont Seasonal Shipping Guide
Vermont's busy months follow the snowbird runs to Florida, Arizona, and Nevada and the summer PCS season. Nor'easters and deep snow set the pace in winter, and mud season and posted roads slow heavy trucks in spring. Here is what to expect month by month.

Snowbird Runs to Florida, Arizona, and Nevada
Our Florida page puts snowbird season at October to April. Cars head south from October through December and come back north in March and April. Our Arizona page has winter residents arriving in October and November and heading home in April and May, and our Nevada page has October and November pulling carriers toward Las Vegas, with snowbirds starting home in March. All three lanes are on this page's tables, so book early in those months. See our snowbird auto transport page for booking lead times and price locking.
PCS Season, Winter, and Mud Season
PCS season runs May to August. Book 3 to 4 weeks out for a move to or from the 158th Fighter Wing, Camp Johnson, or the Coast Guard in Burlington. In winter, VTrans clears the interstates first and aims for safe roads at safe speeds, not bare roads, so a pickup off the main routes may wait a day after a storm. In spring, mud season and posted roads can move a pickup to a paved lot nearby.
| Window | Demand | What drives it | Booking lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| October to December | Snowbirds head south | Florida's snowbird season opens, and winter residents head to Arizona and Nevada in October and November | 2 to 4 weeks on Florida lanes, 3 to 4 on Arizona and Nevada lanes |
| January to February | Base | Snowbirds stay south. Nor'easters and deep snow set the pace in Vermont | 2 to 3 weeks, as our FAQ advises |
| March to May | Snowbirds head home | Cars come back north from Florida in March and April, from Nevada starting in March, and from Arizona in April and May. Mud season slows back roads | 2 to 4 weeks on Florida lanes, 2 to 3 on Nevada lanes, 3 to 4 on Arizona lanes |
| May to August | Peak (PCS season) | PCS orders to and from the 158th Fighter Wing, the Vermont National Guard, and Coast Guard Station Burlington | 3 to 4 weeks |
| September | Base | The quiet month before the fall run. Our Florida page names it a low-rate month | 2 to 3 weeks |
Vermont has no route guide, and this page publishes no seasonal figure beyond the 2 to 3 week booking advice in its FAQ. The snowbird windows and lead times come from our Florida auto transport page (October to April, 2 to 4 weeks, and September as a low-rate month), our Arizona auto transport page (in during October and November, home in April and May), and our Nevada auto transport page (October and November toward Las Vegas, home starting in March), whose lanes appear on this page's tables. None of the three names Vermont on its snowbird list. The PCS window and its lead time come from our Texas auto transport page. We publish no seasonal premium for Vermont, so your quote carries the real number.

Vermont Weather Factors
Nor'easters
The National Weather Service says nor'easters are most frequent and most violent from September to April, and they often peak near New England. NWS Burlington says these coastal storms often bring the biggest snowfalls to south-central Vermont, which sits closest to their track.
Deep Snow in the Hills
NWS Burlington puts seasonal snowfall at about 50 inches in the driest part of the Champlain Valley, around 75 inches in Rutland, and just under 90 inches in St. Johnsbury. Higher sites such as Waitsfield and West Burke average over 100 inches. A pickup in the hills can slip a day after a big storm.
Mud Season
VTrans says many Vermont towns have unpaved roads that break down in the spring thaw, the season Vermonters call mud season. A car on a soft dirt road may meet the truck at a paved lot nearby.
Spring Road Postings
When frost starts to melt, during winter thaws, or in rainy spells, VTrans may post state highways for weight, and towns file their own posted roads and bridges with the DMV. No oversize permit overrides a posting, so heavy loads plan around them.
Winter Storm Response Plan
Monitor
We track nor'easters and winter storm warnings from NWS Burlington, New England 511 road reports, and spring road postings several days out and flag any Vermont shipment in the path.
Communicate
Your dedicated agent calls 24 to 48 hours before the affected pickup or delivery window.
Hold, Reroute, or Refund
No penalty for weather-driven changes. We reroute, delay, or refund based on your call.
Booking lead time during peak Vermont windows: 3 to 4 weeks from May to August on PCS orders. 2 to 4 weeks for the snowbird runs from October to December and from March to May. 2 to 3 weeks the rest of the year, as our FAQ advises.

Additionally, we facilitate secure electronic transfers through established platforms (Zelle, Venmo, Cashapp, Paypal) as well as ACH and wire transfers. For alternative payment preferences, certified and bank checks are also accepted.
What documents do I need to provide to ship my car?
You do not need to provide any documents to ship your car. However, it is recommended to sign a Bill of Lading before the carrier leaves.
What happens upon pick-up and delivery of my car?
The transport carrier will conduct a thorough inspection with you at the predetermined pickup location, noting any existing dents or scratches. The same inspection will be done upon delivery.
How far in advance do I need to schedule my Vermont car shipping service?
To ensure we can fulfill your preferred delivery timeframe, scheduling your car shipment with ample lead time is highly recommended. Ideally, booking your transport at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance allows for optimal planning and execution.
Do I have to register my car in Vermont after it arrives?
Yes, if you are moving here. Vermont requires new residents to register no later than 60 days after moving, or before the out-of-state registration expires if that comes first, and you need a Vermont license or ID to do it. The car must then pass a Vermont inspection within 15 days of registration. A car already registered in your name in a state that collects sales tax is exempt from Vermont's 6 percent purchase and use tax. The minimum liability coverage is $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident, and $10,000 for property damage, and you have 60 days to get a Vermont driver's license.
