How to Ship a Car to West Virginia?

The best way to answer the question of "How to ship my car to West Virginia" is to show you how we operate our auto shipping business. We know car owners won't trust just any car shipping company to move their vehicle across states. They want experience and reputation. Here's how we do it:

  • First, once your order is placed, we'll start moving the vehicle to West Virginia. This usually happens within a week. We'll continue updating you on important information, including the time and date of pickup, tracking number, and the truck driver's number.
  • Then, the truck driver will call you to finalize delivery plans. The drivers in our carrier network strive to take care of all vehicles carried as if they are their own. Protecting your car against any damage from delivery is their ultimate concern. You'll also sign and receive a Bill of Lading before the driver leaves.
  • Finally, once the vehicle arrives in West Virginia, you and the driver will inspect the vehicle for any damage. This is also the time when you will sign the final inspection report. It's that simple!

Lowboy and Step Deck Carriers to West Virginia

Those mountains also make it a pain to get construction equipment from one site to the next, with steep inclines, tight back roads, and other headaches. Add to that the amount of mining and logging equipment moving around to support these two major economic drivers, and there is more than enough transport to be done. From timber companies moving skidders and feller bunchers to mining concerns transferring mining tractors, oversized trucks, and power shovels to builders needing to have a dozer or excavator moved, they want to be able to call on a team that has experience. That's why construction teams across the Mountain State rely on the West Virginia equipment transport experts at Number 1 Auto to ensure they stay on schedule and everything gets to the next job site safely.

Transporting heavy construction equipment is a serious business. The veteran lowboy carrier drivers in our network are trained to handle oversized loads and high gross tonnage. They are skilled in moving heavy equipment in and out of job sites and navigating busy highways with unique loads.

What Moves on Lowboy and Step Deck Trailers

  • Skidders, feller bunchers, and logging equipment
  • Mining tractors and power shovels
  • Oversized trucks and work trucks
  • Dozers, excavators, and loaders
  • Cranes, lifts, and aerial booms
  • Industrial generators and pumps

Why Lowboy and RGN Transport Works for West Virginia

  • Height Compliance

Lowboy decks sit 18 to 24 inches off the ground. Tall machinery clears bridges and overpasses on I-64, I-77, and I-79.

  • Stability and Capacity

Step deck and lowboy trailers carry the weight of full-size dozers, cranes, and mining equipment without straining the suspension.

  • Permit and Escort Expertise

Carriers in our network handle WVDOH hauling permits, sunrise to sunset travel for oversize loads, bridge monitors when a permit calls for them, and the separate limits on the West Virginia Turnpike.

Equipment that does not fit on a step deck moves on a Removable Gooseneck (RGN) trailer. The front detaches so tracked machinery rolls on without ramps. Best for excavators, dozers, and equipment without functional drive systems.

    Enclosed Transport in West Virginia

Enclosed Auto Transport to West Virginia The safest way to transport your car to West Virginia is within an enclosed auto transport. Soft-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: The heavy canvas covering the carriers protects your car from wind-blown debris, rain, sleet, snow, and other elements. Hard-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: In addition to the advantages of soft-sided carriers, hard-sided carriers offer protection for your car in the unlikely event your car is exposed to possible damage during transportation.

Should You Drive or Ship Your Car to or from West Virginia?

Moving to West Virginia: What to Do After Your Car Arrives

Most people shipping into West Virginia are relocating or reporting to one of the two Air Guard wings or the Coast Guard in Martinsburg. West Virginia gives you 30 days to title and register, and a car already titled in your name usually skips the 6 percent tax. Here is what actually applies.

West Virginia law requires you to title and register your car within 30 days of establishing residency. A car already titled in your name in another state owes no 6 percent sales tax when you apply in that window. Once the car is titled, you have 10 days to get a West Virginia safety inspection. West Virginia has no emissions test.

No Sales Tax on a Car You Already Own

West Virginia charges a 6 percent sales tax when a car is titled here. New residents skip it on a car already titled in their name in another state. You must not have lived here when you got the car, you show the out-of-state title and proof that you now live here, and you apply within 30 days of establishing residency. A new West Virginia driver's license counts as that proof. There is no limit on how long the car was titled in your name, but the exemption does not cover leased cars.

West Virginia also taxes cars as personal property. The county assessor sets the tax and the county sheriff collects it, and you need the receipt, or an affidavit from the assessor, each time you renew or transfer your plates. Service members stationed here do not count as residents for registration while the car stays properly registered in their home state.

Safety Inspection Within 10 Days, No Emissions Test

West Virginia requires a safety inspection every 24 months at a station licensed by the West Virginia State Police. New residents have 10 days from the date they title the car to get it inspected. The sticker costs no more than $19 and covers the full two years. Keep the registration card and your insurance certificate in the car when you go.

A valid, unexpired sticker from Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, or Wyoming counts until it expires. West Virginia has no emissions test. The EPA's list of state and local testing programs, updated September 18, 2026, does not include West Virginia. The DMV's steps for new residents list no VIN check.

Insurance and License

West Virginia requires liability coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage. Those limits took effect January 1, 2016. Uninsured motorist coverage at the same limits is required too. The policy must be issued for West Virginia by a company licensed to sell insurance here, and proof must stay in the car.

You have 30 days after moving here to apply for a West Virginia driver's license. A valid license from another state transfers. You pass a vision screening, complete a brief alcohol awareness course, and turn in your old license.

Take the out-of-state title, a title application (Form DMV-1-TR), an odometer disclosure, and your insurance information to any DMV regional office, or send them by mail. If a lender holds your title, send a copy of it and a letter from the lender instead. Fees: $15 for the title, $10 to record a lien, and $51.50 for a standard registration. Hybrids add $100 a year and electric cars $200 a year. Check current fees with the West Virginia DMV before you go.

Snowbird Runs to Florida and Arizona

Our Florida page puts snowbird season at October to April. Cars head south from October through December and come back north in March and April. Our Arizona page sees winter residents arrive in October and November and head home in April and May. Both lanes are on this page's tables, so book early in those months. See our snowbird auto transport page for booking lead times and price locking.

PCS Season and Winter

PCS season runs May to August. Book 3 to 4 weeks out for a move to or from the 130th or 167th Airlift Wing, Camp Dawson, or the Coast Guard in Martinsburg. In winter, ice and mountain snow decide how fast trucks move, so build a day of slack into a January or February pickup.

West Virginia has no route guide, and this page publishes no seasonal figure beyond the 2 to 3 week booking advice in its FAQ. The snowbird windows and lead times come from our Florida auto transport page (October to April, 2 to 4 weeks, and September as a low-rate month) and our Arizona auto transport page (winter residents arrive in October and November and head home in April and May, 3 to 4 weeks), whose lanes appear on this page's tables. Neither page names West Virginia on its snowbird list. The PCS window and its lead time come from our Texas auto transport page. We publish no seasonal premium for West Virginia, so your quote carries the real number.

Popular Seasonal Routes To and From West Virginia

  • West Virginia to Florida in the fall
  • Florida to West Virginia in the spring
  • West Virginia to Arizona in October and November

West Virginia Weather Factors

  • Ice Storms and Winter Emergencies

Before the January 24 to 26, 2026 storm, the governor declared a state of emergency in all 55 counties. Up to three quarters of an inch of ice coated parts of Kanawha County, travel was heavily hit, and Snowshoe fell to 8 below zero.

  • Mountain Snow, Even in May

From May 1 to 4, 2023, up to 16 inches of snow fell above 4,000 feet in Pocahontas and Randolph counties, and 20.3 inches near Davis set a state record for May. Mountain pickups can wait out late snow.

  • Flash Floods That Close Roads

On July 21, 2026, 4 to nearly 8 inches of rain brought catastrophic flash flooding to Lewis, Upshur, and Randolph counties. Roads washed out, and part of I-79 was shut down. A flooded road holds any truck.

  • Plows Reach Back Roads Last

WVDOH runs its snow and ice season from November through March. Crews plow interstates and major routes first, then school bus routes, then local roads. A pickup on a back road may wait for the plows.

Storm Response Plan

  1. Monitor

We track winter storm warnings, flood warnings, and closures on I-64, I-77, and I-79 several days out and flag any West Virginia shipment in the path.

  2. Communicate

Your dedicated agent calls 24 to 48 hours before the affected pickup or delivery window.

  3. Hold, Reroute, or Refund

No penalty for weather-driven changes. We reroute, delay, or refund based on your call.

Booking lead time during peak West Virginia windows: 3 to 4 weeks from May to August on PCS orders. 2 to 4 weeks on Florida lanes and 3 to 4 weeks on Arizona lanes for the snowbird runs, October to December and March to May. 2 to 3 weeks the rest of the year, as our FAQ advises.

If the trip is a short distance, you should consider driving it to save money. Shipping is ideal for long distances, valuable cars, or if you don't want the hassle of driving yourself.

  • Is my vehicle insured when using a West Virginia car shipping service?

Yes, all the carriers in our network are vetted and screened with the DOT and FMCSA to make sure they have up to date and adequate cargo coverage to fully protect your car during transport.

  • How do I get a quote for shipping my car to West Virginia?

Most car shipping carriers request a 3-day (weekday) window for pickup. Once you have your desired pickup window, provide us with the year, make, model, and we will be able to provide you with a West Virginia car shipping rate.

  • How do I pay for my West Virginia auto transport service?

Number 1 Auto Transport offers a variety of convenient payment methods to ensure a smooth transaction for our customers. We accept all major credit cards for your convenience. Additionally, we facilitate secure electronic transfers through established platforms (Zelle, Venmo, Cashapp, Paypal) as well as ACH and wire transfers. For alternative payment preferences, certified and bank checks are also accepted.

  • What documents do I need to provide to ship my car?

You do not need to provide any documents to ship your car. However, it is recommended to sign a Bill of Lading before the carrier leaves.

  • What happens upon pick-up and delivery of my car?

The transport carrier will conduct a thorough inspection with you at the predetermined pickup location, noting any existing dents or scratches. The same inspection will be done upon delivery.

  • How far in advance do I need to schedule my West Virginia car shipping service?

To ensure we can fulfill your preferred delivery timeframe, scheduling your car shipment with ample lead time is highly recommended. Ideally, booking your transport at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance allows for optimal planning and execution.

  • Do I have to register my car in West Virginia after it arrives?

Yes, if you are moving here. West Virginia law requires you to title and register your car within 30 days of establishing residency. A car already titled in your name in another state owes no 6 percent sales tax when you apply in that window. You then have 10 days to get a West Virginia safety inspection. There is no emissions test, the minimum liability coverage is $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage, and you have 30 days to apply for a West Virginia driver's license.
