How to Ship a Car to North Dakota?

The best way to answer the question of "How to ship my car to North Dakota" is to show you how we operate our auto shipping business. We know car owners won't trust just any car shipping company to move their vehicle across states. They want experience and reputation. Here's how we do it:

  • First, once your order is placed, we'll start the process of moving a car to North Dakota. This usually happens within a week. We'll continue updating you on important information, including the time and date of pickup, tracking number, and the truck driver's number.
  • Then, the truck driver will call you to finalize delivery plans. The drivers in our carrier network strive to take care of all vehicles carried as if they are their own. Protecting your car against any damage from delivery is their ultimate concern. You'll also sign and receive a Bill of Lading before the driver leaves.
  • Finally, once the vehicle arrives in North Dakota, you and the driver will inspect the vehicle for any damage. This is also the time when you will sign the final inspection report. It's that simple!

North Dakota Auto Transport Routes, Transit Times, and Pricing

Need a Lowboy or Step Deck Carrier in North Dakota?

Amidst the construction and development buzz in North Dakota, the essential task of transporting enormous machinery across its expansive terrain takes center stage. Visualize the challenge of securely and safely moving substantial construction equipment. This is where the proficiency of a North Dakota transport company becomes vital, and the role of lowboy carriers emerges as indispensable in the construction sector.

Enter the lowboy carriers in Number 1 Auto Transport's network, the champions of transporting what truly shapes North Dakota. These are not your typical trucks; they are colossal vehicles meticulously trained to handle oversized loads and staggering tonnage. With drivers skilled at navigating vast highways and smoothly delivering heavy equipment to job sites, it's evident why Number 1 Auto stands out as the preferred choice. When it comes to the critical task of transporting what forms the backbone of North Dakota's infrastructure, only the best will suffice.

Two white flatbed work trucks with yellow front bumpers chained on a step deck trailer behind a silver semi on a gravel lot, the kind of heavy haul we arrange to and from North Dakota

What Moves on Lowboy and Step Deck Trailers

  • Graders, pavers, and road building equipment
  • Flatbed and medium-duty work trucks
  • Excavators and wheel loaders
  • Tractors, combines, and farm implements
  • Cranes, lifts, and aerial booms
  • Industrial generators and pumps

Why Lowboy and RGN Transport Works for North Dakota

  • Height Compliance

Lowboy decks sit 18 to 24 inches off the ground. Tall machinery clears bridges and overpasses on I-94 and I-29.

  • Stability and Capacity

Step deck and lowboy trailers carry the weight of full-size dozers, cranes, and combines without straining the suspension.

  • Permit and Escort Expertise

Carriers in our network handle North Dakota Highway Patrol oversize and overweight permits, pilot cars for loads over 16 feet wide, and night moves only for loads 12 feet wide or less. Loads over 16 feet wide do not run Saturday afternoons, Sundays, or major holidays.

Equipment that does not fit on a step deck moves on a Removable Gooseneck (RGN) trailer. The front detaches so tracked machinery rolls on without ramps. Best for excavators, dozers, and equipment without functional drive systems.

Need a North Dakota heavy haul quote? Send equipment specs and route. We come back with a price-locked rate.

When Each Option Makes Sense

  • Open auto transport carrier loading vehicles in North Dakota

    Open Transport in North Dakota

Open Auto Transport to North Dakota Thinking about using open auto transport for your North Dakota car transport needs? Open carriers, similar to those utilized by dealerships, guarantee secure and prompt car transport. Your vehicle, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, is reliably secured and reaches its destination within seven days. Choose open auto transport for a secure and affordable solution, safeguarding your car from road vibration, excess mileage, and various potential concerns.

  • Enclosed transport carrier with high-value vehicle in North Dakota

    Enclosed Transport in North Dakota

Enclosed Car Shipping to North Dakota The safest way to transport your car to North Dakota is within an enclosed auto transport. There are two options for shipping your car via enclosed auto transport. Soft-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: The heavy canvas covering the carriers protects your car from wind-blown debris, rain, sleet, snow, and other elements. Hard-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: In addition to the advantages of soft-sided carriers, hard-sided carriers offer protection for your car in the unlikely event your car is exposed to possible damage during transportation.

North Dakota weather note. Being far inland and removed from large water bodies, North Dakota can get pretty frigid in the winter. Regarding the coldest major cities in the United States, three of the top five (Grand Forks, Bismarck, and Fargo) are in North Dakota. Protecting vehicles in transit is extremely important because you've already made that investment. Working with an auto transport team that knows how to protect your vehicle from vicious winter weather is crucial. When you opt to send your vehicle via enclosed auto transport, you'll avoid damage from wind-blown debris, damaging storms, sub-zero temperatures, and more. Having your car shipped to North Dakota in an enclosed carrier is a wise investment for your investment.

Not sure which one fits? Tell us the year, make, and model and we will say so straight.

Moving to North Dakota: What to Do After Your Car Arrives

Most people shipping into North Dakota are relocating or reporting to Minot or Grand Forks Air Force Base. North Dakota charges a 5 percent excise tax when it titles your car, and tax you already paid in another state can count toward it. Here is what actually applies.

North Dakota wants your car registered once you establish residency or take a job here, whichever comes first. The Highway Patrol counts you as a resident after 90 days in the state, unless you are a nonresident student, a tourist, or a member of the armed forces. You pay the 5 percent motor vehicle excise tax when you apply for the title, less credit for tax paid in another state. The state's steps for a new resident list no safety inspection, and North Dakota has no emissions test.

The 5 Percent Excise Tax and Your Credit

North Dakota charges a 5 percent motor vehicle excise tax in place of sales tax. On a car bought outside the state, the tax is figured on the full purchase price, less any trade-in allowance. If you paid sales, use, or excise tax on the car in another state, North Dakota credits it, as long as that state gives the same kind of credit back. If that tax was 5 percent or more, you owe nothing more. If it was lower, you pay the difference.

If your car is titled in Alaska, Delaware, Georgia, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, a Canadian province, a foreign country, or a tribal nation, the tax is figured on the car's current market value instead, and any tax you paid when you bought it is credited. Bring proof of the tax you paid, because the state can ask for it.

No Safety Inspection, No Emissions Test

The state's steps for a new resident list no safety inspection. You bring a completed Application for Certificate of Title and Registration (SFN 2872), proof of your legal name such as your out-of-state license, and your out-of-state title. If a lender holds the title, bring the lender's name and mailing address and a copy of your out-of-state registration. A photo of the VIN plate may be required. North Dakota is not on the EPA's list of state and local emissions testing programs, updated September 18, 2026.

Insurance and License

North Dakota requires liability coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage. Every policy must also carry uninsured motorist coverage of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident, underinsured motorist coverage at the same limits, and $30,000 of basic no-fault coverage per person.

You may drive on a valid license from another state for 60 days after you become a resident, or 30 days with a CDL. Book an appointment at a North Dakota driver license site and bring proof of identity, your Social Security number, proof of your North Dakota address, and your current license. The fee is $15.

Stationed here on orders? A nonresident service member stationed in North Dakota can keep the car registered in their home state, as long as it shows current home-state plates, and dependents can drive it too. The residency rules for registration and for the license do not count a member of the armed forces as a resident.

Book an appointment at a Motor Vehicle site and take your out-of-state title, a completed Application for Certificate of Title and Registration (SFN 2872), and proof of your legal name. The title fee is $5, plus a $1.50 abandoned vehicle disposal fee on your first North Dakota title. Yearly registration is set by the car's weight and the year it was first registered. In 2026, a car of 3,200 to 4,499 pounds first registered in 2021 or later pays $93 for 12 months, and an electric car adds a $120 road use fee ($50 for a plug-in hybrid). Check current fees with the North Dakota Department of Transportation before you go.

North Dakota Seasonal Shipping Guide

Snowbird Runs to Florida, Texas, Arizona, and Nevada

Our Florida page puts snowbird season at October to April. Cars head south from October through December and come back north in March and April, and our Texas page shows the same pattern. Our Arizona page has winter residents arriving in October and November and heading home in April and May. Our Nevada page has October and November pulling carriers toward Las Vegas, with snowbirds starting home in March. All four lanes are on this page's tables, so book early in those months. See our snowbird auto transport page for booking lead times and price locking.

PCS Season and Winter

PCS season runs May to August. Book 3 to 4 weeks out for a move to or from Minot Air Force Base, Grand Forks Air Force Base, or a Guard unit. In winter, a blizzard can close long stretches of I-94 or I-29, and a closed road stays shut until officials judge travel safe again. Build a day of slack into a December to April pickup.

North Dakota has no route guide, and this page publishes no seasonal figure beyond the 2 to 3 week booking advice in its FAQ. The snowbird windows and lead times come from our Florida auto transport page (October to April, 2 to 4 weeks, and September as a low-rate month), our Texas auto transport page (south from October to December, north in March and April), our Arizona auto transport page (in during October and November, home in April and May), and our Nevada auto transport page (October and November toward Las Vegas, home starting in March), whose lanes appear on this page's tables. None of the four names North Dakota on its snowbird list. The PCS window and its lead time also come from the Texas page. We publish no seasonal premium for North Dakota, so your quote carries the real number.

  • Florida and Texas to North Dakota in March and April
  • Nevada to North Dakota starting in March
  • Arizona to North Dakota in April and May

North Dakota Weather Factors

  • Blizzards That Close I-94 and I-29

On April 12, 2022, NDDOT issued a No Travel Advisory for much of the southwest and south central, and I-94 closed from the Montana line to Jamestown. The storm dropped 1 to 3 feet of snow with drifts over 8 feet. From December 13 to 16, 2022, long stretches of I-29 and I-94 closed again.

  • Red River Valley Whiteouts

On January 26, 2014, a few inches of fluffy snow and gusts over 50 mph cut visibility to near zero in open country, and I-29 and I-94 both closed. On January 10 and 11, 2018, blizzard conditions closed I-29 from Fargo to the Canadian border.

  • Flash Freezes and Bitter Cold

On February 10 and 11, 2022, an arctic front dropped temperatures from the 30s to below zero, and gusts hit 60 mph at Fargo. Blizzard conditions filled the Red River Valley. Cold and ice can slow loading and hold a truck until the roads clear.

  • Wide Loads Wait Out Snow and Ice

A North Dakota oversize permit does not allow travel in bad weather, on slippery roads, or when visibility drops to half a mile or less. A heavy equipment move can wait a day.

Storm Response Plan

  1. Monitor

We track blizzard warnings, NDDOT travel alerts, No Travel Advised notices, and road closures on the ND Roads map and 511 several days out and flag any North Dakota shipment in the path.

  2. Communicate

Your dedicated agent calls 24 to 48 hours before the affected pickup or delivery window.

  3. Hold, Reroute, or Refund

No penalty for weather-driven changes. We reroute, delay, or refund based on your call.

Booking lead time during peak North Dakota windows: 3 to 4 weeks from May to August on PCS orders. 2 to 4 weeks for the snowbird runs from October to December and from March to May. 2 to 3 weeks the rest of the year, as our FAQ advises.

  • Can I transport a car to or from North Dakota if it's not running?

Yes, carriers in our network are equipped with a winch to help pull the vehicle onto the trailer. Please let your dedicated shipping agent know if the car breaks, rolls, and steers.

  • Can I pack my car when transporting it to or from North Dakota?

While some personal belongings can be transported inside your vehicle for your convenience, there are restrictions. The total weight must be under 100 pounds, and for security reasons, they should be stored in the trunk or back seat, remaining below the window line. It's important to note that any personal belongings shipped within the car are not covered by the standard transport insurance in case of damage or loss.

  • Does my vehicle need to have plates when shipping it to or from North Dakota?

No, but sometimes a carrier will have to meet in a parking lot due to the size of his truck and the destination street layout. If so, you will most likely have to drive the car a few blocks.

  • How should I prep my car before shipping it?

It's recommended to wash your car so the transport carrier can do a proper inspection at pickup. Remove any toll tags so you don't incur fees while in transit. It's also best to remove any loose parts to prevent any damage during transport.

  • What is the cheapest way to transport a car to or from North Dakota?

The cheapest way to ship a car to or from North Dakota is on an open car trailer.

  • Should I drive or ship my car to North Dakota?

If the trip is a short distance, you should consider driving it to save money. Shipping is ideal for long distances, valuable cars, or if you don't want the hassle of driving yourself.

  • Is my vehicle insured when using a North Dakota car shipping service?

Yes, all the carriers in our network are vetted and screened with the DOT and FMCSA to make sure they have up to date and adequate cargo coverage to fully protect your car during transport.

  • How do I get a quote for shipping my car to North Dakota?

Most car shipping carriers request a 3-day (weekday) window for pickup. Once you have your desired pickup window, provide us with the year, make, model, and we will be able to provide you with a North Dakota car shipping rate.

  • What documents do I need to provide to ship my car?

You do not need to provide any documents to ship your car. However, it is recommended to sign a Bill of Lading before the carrier leaves.

  • What happens upon pick-up and delivery of my car?

The transport carrier will conduct a thorough inspection with you at the predetermined pickup location, noting any existing dents or scratches. The same inspection will be done upon delivery.

  • How far in advance do I need to schedule my North Dakota car shipping service?

To ensure we can fulfill your preferred delivery timeframe, scheduling your car shipment with ample lead time is highly recommended. Ideally, booking your transport at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance allows for optimal planning and execution.

  • Do I have to register my car in North Dakota after it arrives?

Yes, if you are moving here. North Dakota wants your car registered once you establish residency or take a job here, whichever comes first, and you count as a resident after 90 days in the state. You pay the 5 percent motor vehicle excise tax when you apply for the title, less credit for tax paid in another state that gives North Dakota the same credit. There is no safety inspection or emissions test, the minimum liability coverage is $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage, and you have 60 days after becoming a resident to get a North Dakota driver license.
