The Experts in Texas Auto Transport

Texas Car Shipping Routes - Number 1 Auto Transport

Texas is the second-largest state for inbound vehicle shipments. Between military PCS relocations, corporate transfers to the Dallas–Fort Worth and Austin metros, and seasonal snowbird traffic to the Gulf Coast and Rio Grande Valley, our team handles Texas auto transport logistics year-round.

The Texas Triangle

The Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio–Austin corridor—commonly called the Texas
Triangle—is one of the highest-volume auto transport regions in the country. Carriers run these routes
daily, which means competitive rates and fast pickup windows, typically within 24–48 hours of booking.
Routes within the Triangle often cost 15–20% less than comparable distances in less-trafficked regions
because of the carrier density along I-35, I-45, and I-10.

Major Texas Interstate Corridors

I-35 runs north to south through the busiest stretch in Texas. It links Dallas–Fort Worth down through Austin, San Antonio, and on to Laredo at the Mexico border. More carriers run this route than any other in the state. That means faster pickups and lower prices.

I-45 connects Dallas to Houston straight through East Texas. It’s one of the most traveled freight corridors in the region. High carrier traffic keeps transit times short, usually 1–2 days between the two cities.

I-10 is the east-west backbone of Texas shipping. It runs from Houston through San Antonio, then west to El Paso and beyond to the coast. If your vehicle is heading to or from California, Arizona, or the Gulf Coast, it’s likely riding this highway.

I-20 links Dallas to West Texas, passing through Midland-Odessa and the Permian Basin. Carrier traffic is lighter out here. Plan ahead and book 3–5 days in advance to lock in a spot.

I-30 connects Dallas to Texarkana and crosses into Arkansas. It’s the main path for vehicles moving between Texas and the Southeast. Carriers use it to link up with I-40 and routes heading toward Tennessee, the Carolinas, and beyond.

West Texas and Rural Routes

Shipping to or from El Paso, Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland-Odessa, or rural areas of West Texas requires
more lead time. Fewer carriers run these routes regularly, which can mean longer pickup windows (3–5 business days) and higher per-mile rates compared to Triangle routes. We recommend booking 5–7
days in advance for West Texas destinations and being flexible on pickup dates to secure the best
available rate.

Texas Port Cities and International Shipping

Houston and Galveston are major vehicle export and import ports. Corpus Christi and Brownsville also
handle significant vehicle traffic, particularly for shipments to and from Mexico. For vehicles crossing the
border, Laredo, El Paso, and Brownsville are the primary crossing points, each with specific
documentation and customs requirements. Contact our team for guidance on international vehicle
shipments through Texas ports.

In-State Texas Auto Transport Routes

We provide reliable transport services within the Lone Star State. Below are estimated costs and times for popular routes between Texas cities using open transport:

Route Distance Estimated Cost Transit Time
Houston to Dallas 239 mi $450–$650 1–2 days
Austin to San Antonio 80 mi $350–$500 Same day–1 day
Dallas to El Paso 636 mi $600–$850 2–3 days
Houston to San Antonio 197 mi $400–$600 1–2 days
Dallas to Austin 195 mi $400–$600 1–2 days
Fort Worth to Lubbock 320 mi $500–$700 2–3 days

Per-Mile Pricing Guide

  • Short distance (under 500 miles): $1.00–$1.75 per mile
  • Medium distance (500–1,000 miles): $0.75–$1.00 per mile
  • Long distance (1,000+ miles): $0.50–$0.75 per mile

Per-mile rates decrease on longer hauls because fixed costs (pickup scheduling, inspection, loading) are spread across more miles. Texas Triangle routes trend toward the lower end of each range due to high carrier availability.

Note: These are estimates for standard vehicles on open transport. Actual quotes depend on your specific vehicle, dates, and route. Oversized vehicles, inoperable vehicles, and enclosed transport will be higher. Get your exact quote by calling our team.

Military and PCS Auto Transport in Texas

Military Auto Transport

Texas is home to more active-duty military personnel than any other state, and PCS (Permanent Change of Station) moves are one of the most common reasons service members ship vehicles. Our team has coordinated thousands of military vehicle shipments and understands the unique requirements of PCS timelines.

Texas has more active military installations than any other state. Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood, near Killeen), Fort Bliss (El Paso), Joint Base San Antonio (includes Fort Sam Houston, Lackland AFB, and Randolph AFB), and NAS JRB Fort Worth all generate significant auto transport demand during PCS (Permanent Change of Station) cycles. Our team understands military timelines—we coordinate with service members to align pickup and delivery with report dates, and we offer military discounts on every shipment.

Texas Military Installations We Serve

  • Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood), Killeen — Largest active-duty armored post in the U.S.
  • Fort Bliss, El Paso — Major Army installation near the New Mexico border
  • Joint Base San Antonio (Fort Sam Houston, Lackland AFB, Randolph AFB) — Military City,
    USA
  • NAS JRB Fort Worth — Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base
  • Dyess AFB, Abilene — Air Force base in West Texas
  • Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls — Air Education and Training Command
  • Goodfellow AFB, San Angelo — Intelligence and firefighter training

What Military Customers Should Know

PCS orders typically give service members 30–60 days to report to their new duty station. Vehicle shipping takes 1–10 days depending on distance, so we recommend booking as soon as your orders
are confirmed—ideally 2–3 weeks before your report date. Our coordinators work with your timeline, not against it.
Military discounts apply to all shipments. Contact our team with your service branch and installation to get your discounted rate. We serve active duty, reserves, National Guard, veterans, and military
families.

Snowbird Auto Transport to Texas

Every fall, thousands of seasonal residents—known as snowbirds—ship their vehicles from northern
states to Texas to escape winter weather. The Rio Grande Valley (McAllen, Brownsville, Harlingen,
South Padre Island) and the Gulf Coast (Corpus Christi, Galveston, Port Aransas) are the most popular
Texas snowbird destinations.

Snowbird Car Shipping Calendar

  • October–December: Peak southbound demand. Snowbirds shipping from the Midwest,
Northeast, and Great Lakes states to the Rio Grande Valley and Gulf Coast. Book 2–3 weeks in
    advance for best rates.
  • January–March: Steady demand. Late-season snowbirds arriving. Rates stabilize.
  • April–May: Peak northbound demand. Return shipments back to home states. Book
early—carrier availability tightens as demand spikes.

Common Snowbird Routes to Texas

  • Minneapolis, MN to McAllen, TX: $1,000–$1,300 | 5–7 days
  • Chicago, IL to Corpus Christi, TX: $900–$1,200 | 4–6 days
  • Detroit, MI to Brownsville, TX: $1,050–$1,350 | 5–7 days
  • New York, NY to South Padre Island, TX: $1,100–$1,450 | 5–8 days
  • Cleveland, OH to Harlingen, TX: $950–$1,250 | 4–6 days

Pro tip: Snowbird rates are highest in late October and early November when demand peaks. Booking
in September or early October can save 10–15% on southbound shipments.

Texas Weather and Seasonal Timing

Weather and Timing Considerations for Auto Transport

Hurricane Season (June– November)

The Texas Gulf Coast—from Brownsville to Beaumont—is in the Atlantic hurricane zone. During active
hurricane season (especially August–October), carriers may avoid Gulf Coast routes or experience
delays. If you’re shipping to or from Houston, Galveston, Corpus Christi, or Beaumont during hurricane
season, we recommend building in 2–3 extra days of buffer time and booking early. Our team monitors
weather patterns and will proactively communicate any delays.

Summer Heat (June–September)

Texas summer temperatures routinely exceed 100°F, particularly in West Texas, the I-10 corridor
between San Antonio and El Paso, and the Rio Grande Valley. Extreme heat can affect carrier
scheduling (drivers are subject to DOT rest requirements) and may cause minor delays. For high-value
or classic vehicles, enclosed transport provides added protection from sun exposure and heat during
summer months.

Hail Season (March–June)

North Texas and the I-35 corridor through the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex sit in the heart of the U.S.
hail belt. Spring storms can produce damaging hail. If you’re shipping a high-value vehicle during
March–June and your route passes through North Texas, consider enclosed transport for protection
against hail damage.

Holiday and Peak Demand Periods

  • January: College move-in at UT Austin, Texas A&M, Texas Tech. Demand spikes in Austin,
    College Station, and Lubbock.

  • May–June: Summer relocation season begins. Families moving for corporate transfers to DFW and Houston metros.

  • August: Fall college move-in. Second demand spike for university cities.

  • October–December: Snowbird season. Southbound demand to Rio Grande Valley and Gulf Coast.

  • December 15–January 5: Holiday shutdown. Many carriers take time off. Book before mid- December or wait until after January 5 for normal scheduling.

In-State Texas Shipping

Ship a Car Within Texas

Texas covers over 268,000 square miles. Driving from El Paso to Beaumont is farther than driving from
Los Angeles to Jacksonville. In-state vehicle shipping in Texas is not just common—it’s practical.
Whether you’re relocating between cities, buying a vehicle from a seller across the state, or moving a
college student’s car, we coordinate in-state Texas shipments every day.

Why Ship Instead of Drive?

  • Save 500+ miles of wear on your vehicle (Houston to El Paso is 746 miles each way)

  • Avoid a full day (or more) of driving through West Texas with limited services

  • Coordinate vehicle delivery to match your move-in date without juggling two cars

  • Ship a recently purchased vehicle from a private seller or dealership across the state

Popular In-State Routes

Houston to Dallas/Fort Worth (239 miles): The most-requested in-state route. High carrier frequency on
I-45 means fast pickup (often within 24 hours) and competitive rates. Typical cost: $450–$650, transit
time 1–2 days.

Austin to San Antonio (80 miles): The shortest major route. Same-day delivery is often possible. Typical
cost: $350–$500.

Dallas to Austin (195 miles): High demand during college move-in seasons. Carriers run this route daily
on I-35. Typical cost: $400–$600, transit time 1–2 days.

Dallas to El Paso (636 miles): The longest common in-state route. Fewer carriers on I-20 through West
Texas means booking 3–5 days in advance is recommended. Typical cost: $600–$850, transit time 2–3
days.

Dealer, Fleet, and Auction Vehicle Transport

As one of the country’s largest automotive markets, Texas demands high-volume logistics that never slow down. We provide daily, expert coordination for dealerships, fleet managers, and auction buyers across the Lone Star State, serving major hubs like CopartManheim, and IAA. Whether you are relocating company assets or moving twenty cars between inventory lots, our specialized multi-vehicle carrier network ensures your volume shipments are handled with the precision and reliability your business requires.

Dealer Auto Transport Services

We work with independent dealers, franchise dealerships, and wholesale buyers across Texas. Our
multi-vehicle carrier coordination allows you to move 1–10+ vehicles on a single shipment, reducing
per-unit cost. We handle the logistics so your team can focus on selling. Regular dealer clients get
dedicated account management and priority scheduling.

Auction Transport

Texas hosts major auction operations including Copart Dallas, Copart Houston, Manheim Texas Hobby,
Manheim Dallas-Fort Worth, IAA Houston, and IAA Dallas. We coordinate pickup from auction lots
within 24–48 hours of sale completion. Provide your lot number, gate pass information, and vehicle
details, and we handle the rest—including inoperable vehicle loading with winch-equipped carriers.

Fleet Management

Corporate fleet relocations, rental car repositioning, and government vehicle transfers all require
coordinated multi-vehicle logistics. We provide volume pricing, consolidated scheduling, and single-
invoice billing for fleet shipments of any size. Our team manages pickup and delivery across multiple
Texas locations on a timeline that works for your operations.

Texas Auto Shipping Service

How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car to or from Texas?

Your final car shipping rate is based on a few key factors. We provide transparent pricing with no hidden fees.

  • Distance: The price is based on the total mileage of your route. Longer journeys cost more.

  • Location: The specific cities for pickup and delivery matter. Prices can change due to traffic or city access.

  • Trailer Type: Open transport is the most affordable option. Enclosed trailers offer more protection at a higher cost.

  • Vehicle Details: Your car’s size, weight, and condition influence the final rate.

  • Seasonality: Prices can change due to high demand during peak seasons like summer and holidays.

Get a free, instant quote to see a personalized rate based on your specific needs.

Enclosed Car Shipping Service to Texas

For high-value, classic, exotic, or collector vehicles, we recommend enclosed transport. Our network includes carriers operating both soft-sided (canvas-covered) and hard-sided (fully enclosed metal) trailers.

Soft-sided enclosed trailers protect against weather, road debris, and sun exposure. They are the right choice for luxury vehicles, classics, and cars where element protection is the priority. Hard-sided enclosed trailers provide maximum protection including impact resistance and feature hydraulic lift gates for low-clearance exotics. Many collectors require hard-sided enclosed for vehicles valued over $100,000.

We match your vehicle with the appropriate carrier based on value, ground clearance, and your protection requirements. All enclosed carriers in our network carry minimum $500,000 cargo insurance.

Texas Enclosed Auto Shipping Truck | Number 1 Auto Trransport
Open Auto Transport in Texas

Open Auto Transport Service to Texas

Open car transport are the most popular and affordable option for shipping standard vehicles. We connect you with carriers operating the same multi-car haulers used by dealerships to transport new vehicles
nationwide. Your car is securely fastened to the trailer and protected from road vibration, with zero miles added to the odometer.

While vehicles are exposed to weather and road elements during transit, our carrier network maintains excellent safety records. Open transport is the right choice for sedans, trucks, SUVs, and daily drivers
where maximum enclosure protection is not required. Average savings compared to enclosed transport is about 40–60%.

Heavy Equipment and Specialty Transport

Texas construction and energy industries require specialized equipment transport. We coordinate shipments for dozers, excavators, graders, skid loaders, backhoes, and other heavy machinery. Our network includes carriers with the specific trailer types your equipment requires:

  • Lowboy Trailers: For equipment requiring extra height clearance (excavators, large dozers). Deck height of 18–24 inches allows transport of tall machinery within legal height limits.

  • Step Deck Trailers:Two-level design for equipment too tall for standard flatbeds but not requiring lowboy clearance. Common for lifted trucks, smaller construction equipment, and
    agricultural machinery.

  • RGN (Removable Gooseneck): Allows drive-on loading for equipment without functional ramps. Essential for tracked machinery that cannot be crane-loaded.

For oversized loads requiring permits, we coordinate with carriers experienced in Texas Department of Motor Vehicles permitting requirements, including route surveys, escort vehicles, and restricted travel times.

Texas Boat Transport

Motorcycle, ATV, and Boat Transport

In addition to standard vehicles, we coordinate transport for motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, and boats across Texas and nationwide. Motorcycles are secured using specialized wheel chocks and soft tie-
downs on enclosed or open carriers. Boats require flatbed or specialized boat hauler coordination depending on size and trailer requirements. Contact our team with your vehicle details for a custom
quote.

Should You Drive or Ship Your Car to or from Texas?

When moving a car to or from Texas, choosing between driving it yourself or shipping it is a common dilemma. While driving might seem like the cheaper option, it often comes with many hidden costs and risks that make professional auto transport the smarter choice.

The Hidden Costs of Driving Yourself

When you break it down, the true cost of driving often exceeds the cost of shipping by hundreds of dollars. For a 1,500-mile trip from Dallas to New York, the average costs could include:

Fuel: $200-$250 (at 25 MPG)

Meals & Lodging: $200-$300 (for 3-4 days)

Tolls: $40-$60 (on major highways)

When you account for all these expenses, the estimated out-of-pocket costs can easily exceed $440-$610, not including vehicle wear and tear.

The Benefits of Shipping Your Car

Choosing to ship your vehicle eliminates the drawbacks of a long-distance drive and offers several key advantages. It adds zero miles to your car, protecting it from wear and tear. You can save time and money by flying to your destination, while your vehicle is transported safely and fully insured. With transparent, upfront pricing, you get peace of mind and no hidden costs.

Texas Vehicle Registration Requirements

Registering Your Vehicle in Texas

If you are shipping a vehicle to Texas as part of a permanent relocation, Texas law requires you to register your vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency. Here is what you need to know:

What you will need:

  • Valid Texas driver’s license (or apply for one at the same time)
  • Proof of Texas vehicle insurance meeting state minimums
  • Vehicle title (or lien holder information)
  • Proof of identity and Texas residency
  • Passed Texas vehicle inspection (within 90 days)
  • Payment for registration fees and applicable sales tax

Where to Register

Visit your county tax assessor-collector’s office. Many Texas counties now offer online appointment scheduling to reduce wait times. Some counties also accept registration applications by mail.

Important Notes

Texas charges a 6.25% motor vehicle sales tax on vehicles purchased from out of state. If you paid sales tax in your previous state, Texas may credit that amount. Vehicles shipped from states with no sales tax (Oregon, Montana, Delaware, New Hampshire, Alaska) will owe the full 6.25%.

Cross-country shipments from the East or West Coast take 5–10 days. Pickup scheduling typically adds 1–3 days after booking. Texas Triangle routes (Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin) have the fastest pickup times due to high carrier availability—often within 24–48 hours.

We are a licensed auto transport broker (MC-796224, USDOT 2336907). This means we do not own trucks. Instead, we maintain a vetted network of over 5,000 FMCSA-compliant carriers and match your shipment with the best available carrier for your route, timeline, and budget. The broker model gives you access to more carriers, more competitive pricing, and faster pickup windows than booking with a single carrier directly.

The quote we give you is the price you pay. When you book with Number 1 Auto Transport, your rate is locked in at the time of booking. There are no surprise fees at pickup, no fuel surcharges added later, and no price adjustments at delivery. If market rates change between your booking date and pickup date, your price stays the same.

Carriers generally allow a small amount of personal items in the trunk or rear cargo area—typically up to 100 pounds and below the window line. However, personal items are not covered by carrier cargo insurance. We recommend keeping items to a minimum and removing anything valuable. Overloading the vehicle with personal belongings can result in additional fees or carrier refusal at pickup.

Yes. We coordinate transport for inoperable vehicles regularly. Non-running vehicles require a carrier with winch-loading capability, which adds $100–$250 to the standard rate depending on the vehicle’s condition. The vehicle must be able to roll, brake, and steer for standard loading. If the vehicle cannot roll at all, a forklift or specialized equipment may be required—contact our team for a custom quote.

Every carrier in our network is required to carry FMCSA-mandated cargo insurance with a minimum of $100,000 in coverage. For high-value vehicles, many of our enclosed carriers carry $250,000 to $2,000,000 in cargo coverage. We verify insurance documentation for every carrier before
assignment. Your vehicle is covered from pickup to delivery under the carrier’s policy.

Remove all personal items, aftermarket accessories that could come loose (spoilers, antennas, bike racks), and any toll transponders. Make sure your gas tank is between one-quarter and one-half full. Document any existing damage with dated photos before the carrier arrives. Disable any aftermarket alarms. If your vehicle has a retractable hardtop, secure it in the closed position. Leave one set of keys
with the driver.

Your dedicated shipping coordinator provides updates throughout transit. You can call or email us at any time for a status update on your shipment. Some carriers in our network also offer GPS tracking, which we can request when available for your route.

Open transport uses multi-car haulers that expose vehicles to weather and road elements. It is the most affordable option and is used for the vast majority of standard vehicle shipments. Enclosed transport uses covered or fully enclosed trailers that protect vehicles from weather, debris, and sun
exposure. Enclosed is recommended for high-value, classic, exotic, or collector vehicles. Enclosed transport costs 40–60% more than open.

Yes. We offer military discounts for all active duty, reserve, National Guard, and veteran service members. Texas has more military installations than any other state, and we coordinate PCS (Permanent Change of Station) vehicle shipments from Fort Cavazos, Fort Bliss, Joint Base San
Antonio, NAS JRB Fort Worth, and all other Texas bases. Contact our team with your branch and installation for your discounted rate.

For Texas Triangle routes (Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio), booking 3–5 days in advance is usually sufficient due to high carrier availability. For West Texas destinations (El Paso, Lubbock, Amarillo), we recommend 5–7 days. During peak seasons—snowbird season (October–December),
summer relocation season (May–August), and college move-in periods—book 1–2 weeks in advance for the best rates and availability.

Someone over 18 must be present at both pickup and delivery to sign the Bill of Lading and inspect the vehicle. This does not have to be the vehicle owner—you can designate a trusted representative (family member, friend, dealership employee) to handle pickup or delivery on your behalf. Let your coordinator know in advance if someone else will be signing.

At delivery, inspect your vehicle thoroughly and compare its condition to the Bill of Lading signed at pickup. If you notice any new damage, note it on the delivery receipt before signing and contact us immediately. We manage the claims process on your behalf, working directly with the carrier’s
insurance company to resolve the claim. Our carrier vetting process prioritizes safety records specifically to minimize damage incidents.

If you are establishing permanent residency in Texas, state law requires you to register your vehicle and obtain a Texas title within 30 days. You will need a valid Texas driver’s license, proof of Texas insurance, a passed vehicle inspection, and payment for registration fees and applicable sales tax
(6.25%). Visit your county tax assessor-collector’s office to complete the process.

Yes. We coordinate pickup from all major Texas auction locations including Copart Dallas, Copart Houston, Manheim Texas Hobby, Manheim Dallas-Fort Worth, IAA Houston, and IAA Dallas. Provide your lot number, gate pass information, and auction release documentation, and we handle pickup
coordination directly with the auction facility—including inoperable vehicles that require winch loading.

We accept all major credit cards, debit cards, cashier’s checks, money orders, cash, and electronic bank transfers (zelle,Venmo,Cashapp). A deposit is charged after the vehcile has been picked up. We also offer net payment terms for businesses, dealerships, and other corporate entities.
