How to Ship a Car to Ohio?
The best way to answer the question of "How to ship my car to Ohio" is to show you how we operate our auto shipping business. We know car owners won't trust just any car shipping company to move their vehicle across states. They want experience and reputation. Here's how we do it:
- First, once your order is placed, we'll start the process of moving a car to Ohio. This usually happens within a week. We'll continue updating you on important information, including the time and date of pickup, tracking number, and the truck driver's number.
- Then, the truck driver will call you to finalize delivery plans. The drivers in our carrier network strive to take care of all vehicles carried as if they are their own. Protecting your car against any damage from delivery is their ultimate concern. You'll also sign and receive a Bill of Lading before the driver leaves.
- Finally, once the vehicle arrives in Ohio, you and the driver will inspect the vehicle for any damage. This is also the time when you will sign the final inspection report. It's that simple!

Need a Lowboy or Step Deck Carrier in Ohio?
Manufacturing demands regular maintenance and growth, meaning construction crews are regularly on the move in Ohio. To keep skilled tradespeople working, these crews need equipment to be on-site and ready, even when the team members are wrapping up at the last site. Instead of pulling workers off important tasks to move skidders, aerial work platforms, and bulldozers, they rely on an equipment transport company for a helping hand. Construction teams across the Buckeye State rely on the heavy equipment transport experts at Number 1 Auto Transport and the lowboy carriers in our network.
Transporting heavy construction equipment is a serious business. The veteran lowboy carrier drivers in our network are trained to handle oversized loads and high gross tonnage. They are skilled in moving heavy equipment in and out of job sites and navigating busy highways with unique loads.
What Moves on Lowboy and Step Deck Trailers
- Skidders, aerial work platforms, and bulldozers
- Excavators and wheel loaders
- Skid steers, backhoes, and compact track loaders
- Cranes, lifts, and aerial booms
- Combines, tractors, and farm implements
- Industrial generators and pumps
Why Lowboy and RGN Transport Works for Ohio
Height Compliance
Lowboy decks sit 18 to 24 inches off the ground. Tall machinery clears bridges and overpasses on the Ohio Turnpike and Ohio interstates.
Stability and Capacity
Step deck and lowboy trailers carry the weight of full-size dozers, cranes, and combines without straining the suspension.
Permit and Escort Expertise
Carriers in our network handle Ohio oversize and overweight hauling permits, route surveys, escort vehicles, and restricted travel windows.
Equipment that does not fit on a step deck moves on a Removable Gooseneck (RGN) trailer. The front detaches so tracked machinery rolls on without ramps. Best for excavators, dozers, and equipment without functional drive systems.
Need an Ohio heavy haul quote? Send equipment specs and route. We come back with a price-locked rate.
Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport in Ohio
Most Ohio customers ship on open auto transport. About 85 percent of US shipments move this way. Enclosed auto transport is the right pick for classics, exotics, and any vehicle valued at $75,000 or more.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | Open | Enclosed |
|---|---|---|
| Share of US shipments | About 85% | About 15% |
| Vehicles per load | 8 to 10 | 2 to 6 |
| Cost vs. base | Standard | 40 to 60% above open |
| Protection | Tied down, weather exposed | Fully enclosed |

When Each Option Makes Sense
-

Open Transport in Ohio
Thinking about using open auto transport for your Ohio car transport needs? Open carriers are the same double-decker car carriers the dealerships use. Your vehicle will be secured with state-of-the-art equipment and arrive at its destination within seven days of departure. Open auto transport is a secure and affordable way of shipping your car, protecting your vehicle from road vibration, excess mileage, and more.
-

Enclosed Transport in Ohio
When you opt to send your vehicle via enclosed auto transport, you'll avoid damage from wind-blown debris, damaging storms, sub-zero temperatures, and more. Having your car shipped to Ohio in an enclosed carrier is a wise investment for your investment.
Ohio weather note. Unfortunately for Ohioans, the state gets to wear the worst of two climates: sitting at the top of Tornado Alley and the bottom of the Great Lakes; it also needs to deal with the swirling winds of summer as the freezing, gusty lake-effect snows of the winter. To make matters worse, it is home to the Western Ohio Seismic Zone and the Southern Great Lakes Seismic Zone, meaning Ohio is a bit more earthquake-prone than most Midwest states. Working with an auto transport team that knows how to protect your vehicle from these adverse conditions is crucial.
The safest way to transport your car to Ohio is within an enclosed auto transport. There are two options for shipping your car via enclosed auto transport. Soft-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: the heavy canvas covering the carriers protects your car from wind-blown debris, rain, sleet, snow, and other elements. Hard-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: in addition to the advantages of soft-sided carriers, hard-sided carriers offer protection for your car in the unlikely event your car is exposed to possible damage during transportation.
Not sure which one fits? Tell us the year, make, and model and we will say so straight.
Should You Drive or Ship Your Car to or from Ohio?
Driving looks cheap on a short lane. These figures come from our New York to Ohio route guide, for a one-way drive of 450 to 625 miles from New York into Ohio.
The Hidden Cost of Driving It Yourself
| Expense | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Fuel | $55 to $75 |
| Meals | $40 to $80 |
| Tolls | $30 to $60 |
| Lodging | $0 to $150 |
| Total out of pocket | $125 to $365 |
Typical figures for a sedan. Cleveland, Akron, and Columbus are a long day's drive. Dayton and Cincinnati usually mean a night on the road. Tolls are the river crossings and the Ohio Turnpike. Left out: the miles, the day, and the flight back.
Driving vs. Shipping, Side by Side
| Factor | Driving yourself | Shipping your car |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Fuel, tolls, meals, a hotel, a ticket home | One quote, locked at booking |
| Vehicle wear | Adds 450 to 625 miles | Adds zero miles to the odometer |
| Time | A full day behind the wheel, two for Cincinnati | Fly to Columbus in under two hours |
| Risk | Pocono storms, lake-effect snow, fatigue | Covered by the carrier's cargo insurance |
| Effort | A hotel and the trip back | Picked up and delivered for you |
The bottom line. Driving makes sense if you have the day, one car, and no ticket home to buy. Moving a second vehicle or starting a job Monday? Once the hotel and the flight are counted, the gap closes fast.

Moving to Ohio: What to Do After Your Car Arrives
Most people shipping into Ohio are relocating. Ohio puts a 30-day clock on a new resident's paperwork, and a car titled in another state needs an $8 VIN inspection before the title office will touch it. Columbus, Cincinnati, and Toledo have no emissions test. Here is what actually applies.
New Ohio residents have 30 days to transfer their driver license, title, and registration after they take a job, sign a lease, buy a home, or enroll children in school, which is how the BMV defines residency.
The Sales Tax Question Has a Six-Month Answer
If you bought the car at least six months before moving to Ohio, no Ohio sales tax is due. Tell the title office to use exemption code CV. Under six months, Ohio tax is due, with a credit for the sales or use tax you paid to another state.
The $8 VIN Inspection and E-Check
To convert an out-of-state title, Ohio requires an out-of-state VIN inspection. It costs $8 at a deputy registrar license agency, and participating Clerk of Courts title offices and Ohio dealers do it too. Take the form to the title office. There is no safety inspection on any BMV list. The Highway Patrol inspects only salvage and self-assembled vehicles.
E-Check, the emissions test, applies in seven counties only: Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, and Summit, which is Cleveland and Akron. Gas and diesel cars 6 to 25 years old test every two years, and non-plug-in hybrids from 7 to 25. Registering in one of those counties takes a passing E-Check certificate. A car without an Ohio plate may need an $18 test voucher, refunded once the car is registered there. Electric cars and plug-in hybrids are exempt.
Insurance and License
Ohio requires liability coverage of at least $25,000 for injury or death of one person, $50,000 for injury or death of two or more people, and $25,000 for property damage. Switch to an Ohio policy before the title office visit. Your driver license is on the same 30-day clock. With an unexpired out-of-state license, you apply for an Ohio license and complete a vision screening.
Bring the out-of-state title, the VIN inspection form, and proof of Ohio insurance. The title is $18, or $23 in some counties. Registration is $36 plus an $8 deputy registrar fee and a local permissive tax of up to $30. Hybrids add $100, plug-in hybrids $150, and electrics $200. Check current numbers with the Ohio BMV before you go.

Ohio Weather Factors
Lake-Effect Snow in the Snowbelt
Northeast Ohio sits in the Lake Erie snowbelt. Last winter, snowfall topped 100 inches across most of Geauga County and parts of eastern Cuyahoga, southern Lake, and central Ashtabula. A pickup there can slip a day.
Winter Storms and Ice
Ohio winters bring snow, ice, blizzard conditions, and freezing rain. The state's own advice is to take it slow on ice and snow. A driver holds rather than runs through it.
Tornadoes and Spring Storms
Ohio logged 74 tornadoes in 2024 and 60 in 2023 in National Weather Service counts. Carriers watch the storm lines and wait them out.
Ohio Turnpike Work Zones
Work zones on the Turnpike run most of the warm months and cost the truck hours, not days.
Storm Response Plan
Monitor
We track lake-effect warnings, ice storms, and spring storm lines several days out and flag any Ohio shipment in the path.
Communicate
Your dedicated agent calls 24 to 48 hours before the affected pickup or delivery window.
Hold, Reroute, or Refund
No penalty for weather-driven changes. We reroute, delay, or refund based on your call.
Booking lead time during peak Ohio windows: 2 to 3 weeks for October, November, April, May, and late August. 1 to 2 weeks the rest of the year.

What happens upon pick-up and delivery of my car?
The transport carrier will conduct a thorough inspection with you at the predetermined pickup location, noting any existing dents or scratches. The same inspection will be done upon delivery.
How far in advance do I need to schedule my Ohio car shipping service?
To ensure we can fulfill your preferred delivery timeframe, scheduling your car shipment with ample lead time is highly recommended. Ideally, booking your transport at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance allows for optimal planning and execution.
Do I have to register my car in Ohio after it arrives?
Yes, if you are moving here. You have 30 days after you take a job, sign a lease, buy a home, or enroll children in school to transfer your title, registration, and driver license. A car titled in another state needs an $8 out-of-state VIN inspection first. No Ohio sales tax is due if you bought the car at least six months before the move. There is no safety inspection, and E-Check applies only in seven northeast Ohio counties.
