New Hampshire law says a car owned by a resident shall not be taxed. So a car you bring with you owes no tax when you register it here. What you pay instead is a permit fee to the city or town where you live. No car is registered until you have that permit.

The permit fee is based on the maker's list price and the model year. It is $18 for each $1,000 of list price on a current model year car. It drops to $15, $12, $9, and $6 over the next four model years back, and to $3 from the fifth year back on. The minimum is $5. Bring a government photo ID and your title, or a registration in your name, to the clerk.

Title, VIN Check, and Inspection

A car of model year 2000 or newer needs a New Hampshire title, and older cars are exempt. A first title costs $35. The DMV may ask for a New Hampshire VIN verification form before it issues the title.

New Hampshire repealed its state inspection law effective January 31, 2026. The federal EPA proposed approving the end of the state's emissions testing program on August 11, 2026, and has not issued a final decision.
