A leader in auto manufacturing, Indiana is the birthplace of many Subaru, Toyota, and Honda vehicles, making it an authority on quality auto transport.
The state is also a key player in the orthopedic industry, with Warsaw accounting for a significant portion of the global market.

How to Ship a Car to Indiana?
The best way to answer the question of "How to ship my car to Indiana" is to show you how we operate our auto shipping business. We understand that car owners in Indiana won't trust just any car shipping company to move their vehicle across states. They value experience and reputation. Here's how we do it:
- First, once your order is placed, we'll initiate the process of moving a car to Indiana. This typically occurs within a week. We'll keep you informed with important details, such as the time and date of pickup, tracking number, and the truck driver's contact information.
- Next, the truck driver will contact you to confirm delivery plans. The drivers in our carrier network are committed to treating all vehicles as if they were their own, prioritizing the protection of your car against any damage during delivery. Before the driver departs, you'll sign and receive a Bill of Lading.
- Finally, upon the vehicle's arrival in Indiana, both you and the driver will inspect it for any damage. This is also the time when you will sign the final inspection report. It's that simple!

Need to Transport Heavy Equipment with a Step Deck or Lowboy Carrier in Indiana?

If you're looking for reliable heavy equipment transport in Indiana, look no further.
Contact Number 1 Auto Transport for a free instant auto transport quote and experience the difference of working with seasoned car shipping professionals.
What Moves on Lowboy and Step Deck Trailers
- Dump trucks, excavators, and material handlers
- Lifts, cranes, and aerial booms
- Dozers, backhoes, and wheel loaders
- Skid steers and compact track loaders
- Combines, tractors, and farm implements
- Industrial generators and pumps
Why Lowboy and RGN Transport Works for Indiana
Height Compliance
Lowboy decks sit 18 to 24 inches off the ground. Tall machinery clears bridges and overpasses on I-65, I-69, I-70, and the Toll Road.
Stability and Capacity
Step deck and lowboy trailers carry the weight of full-size dozers, cranes, and combines without straining the suspension.
Permit and Escort Expertise
Carriers in our network handle the oversize and overweight permits issued by the Indiana Department of Revenue's Motor Carrier Services, plus route surveys and escort vehicles.
Equipment that does not fit on a step deck moves on a Removable Gooseneck (RGN) trailer. The front detaches so tracked machinery rolls on without ramps. Best for excavators, dozers, and equipment without functional drive systems.
Need an Indiana heavy haul quote? Send equipment specs and route. We come back with a price-locked rate.

Enclosed Transport in Indiana
You need to work with an Indiana auto transport company that protects your major investment, whether a luxury sedan or a high-end SUV, regardless of the weather. By sending your vehicle via enclosed auto transport when looking for car transport in Indiana, you'll avoid damage from rain, heavy winds, wind-blown debris, and snowfall. Shipping your car to Indiana in an enclosed carrier is a wise investment.
Indiana weather note. While it's nice having the lake towns on Lake Michigan, it also comes with the lake-effect weather that this area of the United States gets. If that's not enough, the region is surprisingly tornado-prone: South Bend and Indianapolis were ranked among the top 20 tornado-prone cities in the United States.
The safest way to transport your car to Indiana is within an enclosed auto transport. There are two options for shipping your car via enclosed auto transport: Soft-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: The heavy canvas covering the carriers protects your car from wind-blown debris, rain, sleet, snow, and other elements. Hard-Sided Enclosed Auto Transport: In addition to the advantages of soft-sided carriers, hard-sided carriers offer protection for your car in the unlikely event your car is exposed to possible damage during transportation.
Not sure which one fits? Tell us the year, make, and model and we will say so straight.
Should You Drive or Ship Your Car to Indiana?
Driving it yourself looks free until you add it up. These figures come from our New York to Indiana route guide, for a one-way drive of 525 to 850 miles from New York into Indiana.
The Hidden Cost of Driving It Yourself
| Expense | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Fuel | $65 to $100 |
| Meals and lodging, one night | $150 to $250 |
| Tolls | $30 to $70 |
| Total out of pocket | $245 to $420 |
Typical figures for a sedan with one night on the road. Tolls cover the Hudson crossing, the Ohio Turnpike, and the Toll Road. The total leaves out the flight back, the miles on the odometer, and two days of your time.
Driving vs. Shipping, Side by Side
| Factor | Driving yourself | Shipping your car |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Fuel, a hotel, meals, tolls, and wear | One quote, locked at booking |
| Vehicle wear | Adds 525 to 850 miles | Adds zero miles |
| Time | Two days and a night in Ohio | A short flight, or none at all |
| Risk | I-80 in the Poconos, Toll Road snow, fatigue | The carrier's cargo insurance |
| Effort | Route planning, a hotel, two long days | Picked up and delivered for you |
The bottom line. Driving is cheaper on paper for one person with time to spare. Shipping wins when a second car has to move, when the car belongs to a student, or when two days are worth more than the difference.

Moving to Indiana: What to Do After Your Car Arrives
Most people shipping into Indiana are relocating. Indiana gives you 60 days, and two rules surprise most newcomers in a good way. There is no sales tax on a car you already own, and the one required inspection is free at any BMV branch. Here is what actually applies.
New Indiana residents have 60 days to apply for an Indiana title for every vehicle they own with an out-of-state title. Miss the window and the BMV charges a $30 administrative penalty. Your driver's license runs on the same 60-day clock.
No Sales Tax on a Car You Already Own
The BMV puts it plainly: "New Indiana residents are not charged sales tax when transferring their vehicle's certificate of title from their prior state of residence to Indiana." You claim it on Form ST-108E. What you pay instead is the annual vehicle excise tax. It is a flat rate or based on the car's value and age, and you pay it with the registration.
One Free Inspection, No Safety Test, Emissions in Two Counties
Every vehicle from another state needs a VIN inspection before Indiana will title it, new residents included. Any BMV branch does it free if you bring the car. A law enforcement officer can do it for up to $5 on State Form 39530. There is no safety inspection. The BMV's new-resident list has no line for one.
Emissions testing applies only in Lake and Porter counties, next to Chicago. There it runs every two years on vehicles built after 1975 with a gross vehicle weight rating of 9,000 pounds or less, and the four newest model years are exempt. In those two counties the BMV lists the test with the papers you bring to register. Everywhere else, Indianapolis included, there is none.
Insurance and License
Indiana's minimum liability coverage is 25/50/25: $25,000 for injury or death of one person, $50,000 for two or more people in one accident, and $25,000 for property damage. You need proof of insurance to buy a plate.
The license window is the same 60 days. If you are 18 or older with a valid license from another state, the BMV asks for a vision screening, not a knowledge exam. If your old license has expired, you take the knowledge exam too.
Bring the out-of-state title, the VIN inspection, proof of your Indiana address, and proof of insurance. The title is $15. Registration is $21.35 a year plus a $15 Transportation Infrastructure Improvement Fee plus the excise tax, and some counties and cities add their own vehicle tax. Electric vehicles add a $242 supplemental fee and hybrids $81. Check current numbers with the Indiana BMV before you go.

PCS season runs May through August. Late August brings student move-ins at West Lafayette, Bloomington, and South Bend, so book 3 weeks out then. See our snowbird car transport page for where the trucks go in the fall.
Winter Is Cheaper, With a Day of Slack
December through February is the cheapest window of the year on our New York to Indiana lane. Lake-effect snow adds a day of buffer, not dollars. If your dates are flexible, December through February and June through mid-August price best.
| Window | Demand | What drives it | Booking lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| October to November | Peak | Snowbirds pull carriers onto the Florida and Arizona lanes | 2 to 3 weeks |
| December to February | Base | Cheapest window. Lake-effect snow adds a day of buffer, not dollars | 1 to 2 weeks |

Indiana Weather Factors
Lake-Effect Snow on the Toll Road
Snow bands off Lake Michigan hit the Toll Road between Gary and South Bend from December through February. The Weather Service says one narrow band can drop 2 to 3 inches an hour while the sun shines a mile or two away. Carriers build in a day of buffer.
Ice on I-70
A winter storm ices I-70 across central Indiana. With no alternate into Indianapolis, the plan is a day of buffer, not a detour.
Tornadoes Any Time of Year
More than 1,500 tornadoes have been verified in Indiana since 1950, and 57 were recorded in 2024. The state's homeland security agency says they can come at any time and often at night. When a warning covers the route, the driver waits it out.
I-80 Through the Poconos
A nor'easter or a snow squall can shut I-80 through the Poconos for hours, and a city pickup can slip a day.
Storm Response Plan
Monitor
We track lake-effect warnings, I-70 ice, tornado watches, and I-80 closures several days out and flag any Indiana shipment in the path.
Communicate
Your dedicated agent calls 24 to 48 hours before the affected pickup or delivery window.
Hold, Reroute, or Refund
No penalty for weather-driven changes. We reroute, delay, or refund based on your call.
Booking lead time during peak Indiana windows: 2 to 3 weeks for October to November and April to May, and 3 weeks in late August. 2 weeks in March and September. 1 to 2 weeks from December to February and from June to mid-August.
